I-LEAGUE 2012 : Pune FC focus on bouncing back in last home game..

Pune FC expect to put on better show against defending Salgaocar SC with an aim to ensure their fans that the last round loss was just a bad day in office. Having lost considerable ground on the I-league table, Pune FC, currently fifth with 43 points, is also keen to lift themselves back into a higher position when they play their last home game of the I-League at Shiv Chhatrapti Sports Complex, Mhalunge-Balewadi on Wednesday.

Ahead of this must-win game, Pune FC coach Derrick Pereira says, "The aim is to bounce back and end the season on a high." Preferring not to have the final position on the table a priority, the coach explains, "I guess getting the job done first will automatic determine the rest."

Dropping from the second position that they held two rounds ago, Pune FC is up against a host of possibilities, which includes East Bengal (44 pts; 23 matches), Churchill Brothers (44 pts; 24 matches) standing with a good chance to finish ahead. Prayag United SC (42 pts; 25 matches), Mohun Bagan (44 pts; 25 matches) and Salgaocar (40 pts; 23 matches) run close.

Thus in the current scenario, Pune FC have their fate in their own hands over the next two rounds to gain maximum and then wait in hope. Getting back to the game on the morrow, both teams will miss a host of sure-shot first eleven players. Pune FC will be without the services of experienced custodian Subrata Paul and left-wing back Gurjinder Kumar - both serve a one-match suspension for picking up two yellow cards in separate matches. On the other hand central defender Caitano Costa is out with a hamstring injury he picked up in the last match.

As a result, Amrinder Singh replaces Subrata giving coach reason to decide between him and Shahinlal Meloly. Shahin nod on match day would mean making a comeback in the playing eleven after picking up injury in Round 4. Defender NS Manju (for Costa) and Kamaljeet Kumar (for Gurjinder) are the other changes to the 18-member squad. Salgaocar, it is learnt, also miss three key players due to injury top-scorers and regular foreign strike partnership of Chidi Edeh and Ryuji Seyoka and attacking midfielder Tomba Singh.

On the bright side, Pune FC has reason to push with their mission as both Chidi and Ryuji account for 16 goals of the 31 scored by Salgaocar in the league. However, Pune FC have their task cut out in the defence as over two games six goals were conceded. The coach explains, "The situations were different. Against HAL it was relaxation, while against Churchill Brothers it was the pressure to score coupled with needing to win to remain on top."

"It always is difficult to keep players focused and motivated at the end of every season. I felt my boys did their best but yes they could have done better.' For Pune FC it will also be a test for strikers Mandjou Keita, Subash Singh and Jeje Lalpekhlua against the Goans who have the meanest defence in the league and includs a major role played by current India No. 1 Karanjit Singh in goal. The defence, led by captain and Brazilian Luciano Sabrosa, has conceded only 17 goals, much better than the second best defence belonging to Dempo (21).

In fact, Subrata's absence in Pune FC goal robs robs the game of the showdown between the two Indian number one goalkeepers. In similar vein, Salgaocar, in absence of their striking options, has winger Ishfaq Ahmed leading the line as sole attaker, supported by playmaker Maxime Belouet and the wingers. Only Francis and Ishfaq have scored more than one goal each bagging three so far.

Salgaocar boast of 13 clean-sheets this season, the highest in the league, but for Pune FC bouncing back remains the only option. The hosts go into their penultimate round (Round 25) winning the first-leg in Goa. However, in Pune, when both teams met it the last time, the Goans walked tall.

With revenge also Pune FC's mind the loss last year was a first in the elite league and also the first time Pune FC failed to score against them. Overall, Pune FC in all-time meetings enjoy a distinct advantage winning four, losing once and drawing one game in the six encounters played so far.

With both teams battling a plethora of odds and expectations in their scramble for final positions on the table, the game is set for a level contest. Mind you this season Salgaocar are no new comers to Pune having launched their season playing the Federation Cup qualifiers in the city before heading off to win the title in Kolkata.

ONGC qualified for next edition's I-League when they played a 1-1 draw against Aizawl FC in their last match. ONGC finished on 22 points from 12 outings. Alhassan Abubakr restored parity for ONGC after Sumaila Safianu had put Aizawl FC in the lead in the 30th minute.

The second place would be finalised when Kolkata's Mohammedan Sporting take on United Sikkim Football Club on Tuesday (April 16). A draw for USFC will earn them a ticket to next edition's I-League while Mohammedan Sporting need a win. USFC stay on 21 points while Mohammedan Sporting are on 20 points. Both teams have played 11 matches each.

Knowing that a draw would be enough for ONGC to earn a ticket for the top-tier, they started on a cautious note. But once they settled down, they interchanged well among themselves and could have earned three points had their strikers not muffed up from close.
