12.06.2015- AIFF PRESS RELEASE : A day after an ‘unlucky’ India went down 1-2 to Oman in the Russia 2018 World Cup Preliminary Joint Qualification match, the Men in Blue left on Friday (June 12) for Guam to play for their next match slated for June 16. The travel to Guam via Delhi and Tokyo involves two flight changes and accumulates to a flying time of almost 16 hours leave aside the waiting time at the Airports. The Indian Team lands in Guam late on Saturday (June 13) afternoon around 5pm.

Nevertheless, the morning after, the ‘new generation India,’ rejuvenated and confident after their gallant display against Oman unanimously stated that they “look forward to the next context.” Guam are sitting pretty with three points in Group D after their solitary goal victory over Turkmenistan on Thursday (June 11).

The last and the only time India played Guam was in the 2013 AFC Challenge Cup in Yangon where after a barren first half, India had romped home 4-0, courtesy a brace from Sunil Chhetri and a goal each from Clifford Miranda and Jewel Raja. National Coach Stephen Constantine maintained that “Guam are a good side.”

“There are a very difficult side and are being managed by an English Coach. They have five Players playing in the US with a couple playing in the MLS. So for all who have been rubbishing Guam, you need to look at their strength. Captain Arnab Mondal mentioned about the gritty show against Oman.

“On the surface, it seemed an uneven contest. But we brought it close. It’s impossible to single out any certain individual. It was a concerted Team effort from our side. That’s the specialty of this Team,” he stated. “The fight against Oman has added to our confidence. We have a feeling this is the beginning of a turnaround in Indian Football. I foresee this as the beginning of something good,” he added.

After fielding eight debutants in the back to back Preliminary Round 1 matches against Nepal, Constantine had fielded five debutants -- Rino Anto, Dhanachandra Singh, Lalchhuanmawia, Sehnaj Singh and Seityasen Singh – against Oman. “When has it ever happened in Indian Football that 13 debutants have been fielded in three matches? Mondal quipped. “You balance it with the results, you will find us beating Nepal and going down narrowly to one of the strongest sides in Asia. All of that illustrates that the ‘new generation’ are ready to take on the mantle,” he pronounced.

“Against Oman, three of the back-four were debutants. How many can afford that? And all of us played together for the first time. And I reiterate, we were playing against Oman,” Mondal explained. Mondal, however, wasn’t willing to shed more light on the next match. “Coach will guide us. We will follow him. I request the fans to support us and be patient. #Backtheblue.”

11.11.2015: PREVIEW AIFF PRESS RELEASE : Guam are the favourites, declares Constantine ---- It’s raining. Dark clouds float overhead threatening to deliver every moment. And they do. The showers since the arrival of the National Team squad in this lush green Garden City have been light, torrential, light and then torrential again. For the last four days, the roads haven’t dried up ever. It’s wet.

The Indian Team drenched in the rain have had two practice sessions so far – a recovery session on Monday evening and a session on Tuesday morning. The points table doesn’t project any smiles for the boys having lost all of the five so far. It’s wet even there.

Guam arrived in Bengaluru a couple of days earlier than Team India assembled. They have in fact have had more practice sessions than the Men in Blue. And even as you hear the pitter patter of rain drops on the window panes, National Coach Stephen Constantine mentions “Guam are the favourites.”

“Guam have seven points. They are above us in the FIFA Rankings. So they are the favourites,” he says in one breath. “But at the end of the day it’s what you do on the pitch which determines the result.”You take him back to India’s previous match against Guam. Constantine says: “This was our first away trip in the Group. I was fully aware of the difficulties that faced us in Guam. They may be a Guam Team but most of their Players ply their trade in USA,” he states.

“In any case, we didn’t play particularly well in which has been the case in all of our away games so far. Four games later, we are a better side that we were then. I have respect for Guam and their Coach as they do. But we need the points to give ourselves the chance of making the Playoffs.”

You turn to the Players and they admit unanimously that “we were not up to the mark in Guam.”The other day Arnab Mondal mentioned: “People may speak about the weather, the ground conditions when we played Guam in Guam. But simply put, they were better than us on that day.”

India have so far played two matches at the Kanteerava. The first against Oman was lost 1-2, a match where the Men in Blue should have snatched away at least a draw. The second, despite losing 0-3 to ‘Giants of Asia,’ the boys were spontaneously lauded for their aggressive attitude by none other than Carlos Queiroz.

“When I came here in 2015, I was under no illusion as to the difficulties and challenges that lay ahead. We had not qualified for the World Cup Qualifiers in 8 years,” Constantine quips.“In my first Press Conference in Delhi I had told everybody present that this is going to be a long and difficult road and it will take time to regain our pride in Asian Football. In this time, we have blooded 16 debutants and have changed the attitude and atmosphere of the Players. And if you look at three of our five Qualifiers, we have lost by the odd goal.”

“I believe that this group of Players that we have and the others that will follow will make us into a competitive Team in the months and years to come.”The best part of India’s Team Hotel stays that the Stadium is just across the road. And there have been occasions when a couple of the Players have preferred to walk rather than take the car to fulfill obligations.

Constantine, nevertheless, sounds impatient. “I hate the in between. I really enjoy playing. I wish we can play every week. Unfortunately this is the drawback when you are Coaching a National Team. I just can’t wait for the kick-off,” he pronounces. It’s still raining outside. All is wet.

India - Pre world cup 2018 qualification (INDIA Vs GUAM)

15.06.2015: India to face Guam in the 2nd match of world cup 2018 qualification AFC zone tomorrow at 11.45 AM indian time. India lost 1-2 to Oman in their first game while Guam beat Turkmenistan 1-0 in their first match. Guam Coach Gary White informs that they are "looking forward to the game.” It’s likely to be a competitive one. Win or perish – both Teams would go out to get those three points. We have watched India’s match against Oman and must say that there seems to be a new life in the Indian Team. They looked very organised and it will be difficult to break them down,” he states.

India coach Stephen Constantine told “We are not in a position to look at the FIFA Rankings. Every Team have their plus and minus-es. Guam having won their last match against Turkmenistan are going to be encouraged, stay motivated and be ready to play,” said National Coach Stephen Constantine. India met Guam last in 2013 where they won 4-0.
