SFC PRESS RELEASE : The Greens picked up their first win of the season as they broke DSK-Shivajians defence & hearts with a Valentine Day thriller score of 3-2 at the Balewadi Stadium, Pune on Sunday evening. A brace from Asier Dipanda couldn’t save the hosts as Darryl Duffy's hat trick ensured the visiting side retained the 3 points.
Both teams saw a change in their starting line-ups, as Salgaocar FC made way for Keenan Almeida, Calvin Mbarga and Thongkhosiem Haokip started for Nicolau Colaco and the injured duo of Jackichand Singh and Seityasen Singh. The Pune based side also had some significant additions as Baljit Sahni & Juan Quero Barraso, made their debuts & Mohammed Dhot made it in the playing XI along with Mohammed Rafi, Melvin Lobo & custodian Prosenjit Ghosh. Aser Dipanda occupied a seat on the bench.
The game kicked off and it looked like the Shivajians were in control as they took the first crack at goal in under 8 minutes. Barrasso sent a wonderful through ball to Douhou who had perfect control of it as he made an attempt which was deflected by Augustine Fernandes for a corner. Another attempt in the 14th minute this time from inside the box after a free-kick found Mohammd Rafi who took a loose shot which didn’t rouble Karanjit Singh.
After being under attack for the major part of the first half the Greens seemed to get their act together on the attacking end as Calvin Mbarga tries to head a cross from Gurjinder Singh but goes above goal. Salgaocar grew bolder as Darryl Duffy made another cross in to Mbarga which if not for a fine save by Prosenjit would have been the opener. A corner in the 39th minute by Martin Scott finds Haokip who drills it past the heavily manned box which found the net after it was cleverly deflected by Duffy. The score stood 1-0 in favour of the Greens as the first half ended.
The second half seemed to go in the visiting side’s favour as in the very 1st minute Haokip ran down the right & crossed the ball for Duffy to tap-in, which he was much obliged to do as he doubled the lead. In the 70th minute Duffy once again added his name to the score board with a header from a lovely cross of the second half substitute Jackichand Singh .
Asier Dipanda who was introduced to the game in the 65th minute turned out to be the Super –sub that gave the home side some hope. Scoring from a penalty, which Baljit Singh earned in the 76th minute after he was brought down in the Salgaocar box by Eder. In matter of 10 minutes he completed his brace sending the home fans into a frenzy as he gave them some hope. However it was not to be as Salgaocar held their own moving from the bottom position above DSK & Aizawl into the 7th spot.
