From a drab first half to an entertaining second! Salgaocar FC’s Stephen Satarkar smashed in a brilliant second half hat-trick to help his side register a commanding 5-0 win over Churchill Brothers FC Goa Reserves in the Selvel Goa Professional League played at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Tuesday. Stephen scored treble (63’, 76’, 79’) while Steflon D’Costa (84’) and Fhezer Gomes (88’) added two more to complete the rout.
Salgaocar FC made just one change in their playing eleven as Flagan Rodrigues made way for Sourabh Patil while there were five changes for the Red Machines from their defeat in the opening league fixture. Shiv Yadav, Jobern Cardozo, Preston Fernandes, Godfrey Mascarenhas and Josley Dias started for the Varca-based team.
It was a much improvised performance from the Red Machines from their previous game as they managed to match their opponents in the first 45 minutes. Both sides’ play was restricted only to midfield as neither teams showed any urgency in getting the goals.
But come second half, it was a different display from The Greens. Coach Anthony Pereira’s side were back to life as Steflon and Stephen ran havoc in the Churchill Brothers Fc final third. After nearly missing to score early in the second half through Selwyn Miranda and Stephen, as the latter had an open chance when he was set through on goal by Daniel Gomes, but his curler went just over the bar, Salgaocar took control of the game.
Stephen finally broke the deadlock with a smart finish in the 53rd minute when he zoomed into the box and drilled a low grounder to put his side ahead. Salgaocar soon doubled the tally when Steflon nearly got past the rival keeper but clashed with the keeper and the ball fell to an unmarked Stepehen, who finished to score his brace.
The first half sub completed his hat-trick with a clinical finish when he got past his marker and smashed in to prove his worth to his team, game over. For Churchill Velito came close to scoring but his effort was pushed for a corner.
But there was room for more goals for Salgaocar as Steflon scored the fourth. Fhezer Gomes scored the fifth with his first touch of the game when Selwyn Miranda set him through. Fhezer took a first time shot from a tight angle which took a touch of the keeper and entered the goal.

Gaurav Vaigankar (80’) was the other goal-getter for the Golden Eagles. For Sesa FA, Kunal Salgaonkar pulled a goal back in the 53rd minute.
However the goal finally arrived in the 9th minute which came after a defensive error from Sesa FA. Sandeep S played a backpass to the keeper under pressure whose weak clearance fell to skipper Beevan just outside the box. With the keeper out of his line, Beevan didn’t waste any time and without having a second thought, he curled his shot in the open goal.
Sesa nearly levelled terms when Melroy was caught out of his position when he came out of the box to clear a long Sesa attack, and the ball came into substitute Myron Borges’ path but his long lobbed shot narrowly missed the open goal. That should have been in for Sesa.
Meanwhile the Golden Eagles had an opportunity to regain their two-goal lead when Uttam stylishly flicked the ball to Richard Cardozo and the last-named goal-bound shot from an acute angle sailed over the crossbar.
Dempo SC scored the third in the 80th minute from a set-piece. Shallum Pires sent in a long freekick from the halfway mark to an unmarked Gaurav Vaigankar at the far post, who pushed it past Sesa keeper.
Dempo soon scored their fourth goal in the 83rd minute. It was a well-worked goal for Dempo as second-half substitutes Suraj Hadkonkar set Ariston Costa through, who had a chance to take a shot at goal but he passed to Uttam and the last-named scored his second of the day and the team’s fourth. Melroy came with a fine save to deny Borges late in the game.

CAL : Kouame Junior, Sidharth Kundaikar

Calangute started the match on an attacking front from the word go and came close agonisingly close early in the game when Nickson Castanha floated a perfect corner kick in the box, wherein Siddhant Shirodkar jumped highest but his header narrowly sailed over the bar. The first half was totally dominated by Calangute as they created plenty of chances. Soon Shirodkar saw his effort being blocked by the Presley with a diving save.
Velsao SCC lacked creativity and couldn’t get the ball past the opponent’s midfield. Though Ganesh Thakur worked tirelessly in the midfield, he lacked support from his teammates. Velsao SCC were lucky when Rohan Kamble’ long range effort came off the post, back into the play, but before any Calangute player could capitalise on the rebound, Velsao SCC defender cleared the ball to safety.
Calangute deservingly took the lead in the 26th minute when Fulganco Cardozo floated a perfect cross in the box, which was met by Kouame Juniour, who nodded in from close. Unable to get past Calangute’s strong defence line marshalled by Melwyn, Velsao SCC’s Ronil Azavedo tried his luck from a distance but his effort failed to see the target.
The teams played more of the ball in the midfield in the second half.
There was a huge penalty cry from the Calangute camp when Rohan Pednekar went down in the box after being blocked by Velsao keeper Presley Mascarenhas, but referee showed no interest and allowed the play to continue. At the other end, a quick counter from second half substitute Joseph Pereira almost gave Velsao the equaliser. The forward ran down the right flank and squared the ball to Savelon Cardozo, who squandered a golden chance to score as he shot wide from touching distance.
Meanwhile, Velsao keeper Presley came with an outstanding block to deny Rohan Pednekar, who was one-on-one with the keeper. Pednekar had Kouame on his right, but he preferred to go alone ultimately losing the chance to double the account. Calangute doubled the account in the 85th minute when Kouame on receiving the ball forward squared it an unmarked Sidharth Kundaikar, who scored with a calm and composed finish.
In the dying minutes of the game, Substitute Daryl Costa saw is long range effort come off the crossbar.

With their skipper Kunal Kundaikar being promoted to their main team — Sporting Clube de Goa, Janio Fernandes was given the charge to lead the side. Last season’s star midfielder Joyson Gauncar started in midfield; team’s leading scorer Lloyd Cardozo featured upfront.
Panjim came close to scoring in the 13th minute when Liston Cardozo delievered a perfect cross to Filton D'Cunha, whose stylish header didn't create much problems for Veettil.
At the other end, Veettil denied Akash Sanadi from a free-kick with a brilliant save by pushing the ball for a corner. The resultant flag kick was wasted by Panjim as the ball bounced into the box, but none of the Panjim players could get the touch of it.
Panjim had a glorious chance to take the lead when Chandan Gawas ran down the right flank and squared the ball to Lloyd, but the last named missed his first attempt, however, his second attempt was straight to the keeper.

SAL : Saeesh Halarnkar (39'-p), Stephen Satarkar 90'
GFA PRESS RELEASE : Salgaocar FC began their Goa Football Association Selvel Goa Professional League with a fluent 2-0 win at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Wednesday. The Greens scored a goal in either halves through Saeesh Halarnkar (38’) and Stephen Satarkar (90’) to ensure three points.
Salgaocar FC coach started with experienced Jason D’Mello in goal with Daniel Gomes and Flagan Rodrigues in the back. Ribhav Sardesai, now turned senior, started along with Valentinho Nazareth in the midfield. With Devendra Murgaonkar leaving in summer, Steflon D’Costa was handed the charge to get the goals. For FC Goa, they had an experienced core with Anthonio Da Silva guarding the frame. Brian Faria in defence and new signee Delton Colaco in the mid while Aaren played as a lone striker.
The teams started cautiously, but it was the Greens who had the first real chance in the eight minute when Brisen Fernandes read Vasim Inamdar’s run in the box and played a perfect lob ball for the last name. Vasim had the ball at his feet but before the U-20 player could pull his trigger, Perry Pereira came with a vital interception.
FC Goa then took total control of the game with their midfielders outplaying the Greens. However, they were dealt with a blow in the 38th minute when their defender Malsawmtluanga Ralte handled a Perry Pereira’s cross inside the box. The defender, who was unmarked conceded a needless foul in the box, which forced referee to point straight to the spot. Saeesh Halarnkar smashed the ball in the far right, past the diving Antonio.
Salgaocar nearly doubled the lead in the 40th minute. Saeesh set Steflon on the right flank, who got past his marker, and shot at the goal from a tight angle. Keeper Antonio made a great save only to see the rebound fall straight to Valentinho, but the last name shot out of frame with no one between him and the goal. This was the best chance so far from an open play in the first half.
FC Goa started with a intent to get the equaliser in the second half and had their chance within 10 minutes of the restart. Aaren used his physical strength to win the ball from his opponent and squared to Vasim, but the youngster missed another opportunity to get his side back on level terms, shooting wide.
With 10 minutes to go, FC Goa were forced to play with 10 men after first half substitute Nestor Dias, limped off the pitch after picking up a knock. Salgaocar FC nearly capitalised on having a man advantage when Stephen Satarkar was set through on goal but he shot wide.
But the second half sub, made amends in the 90th minute when he secured full points for The Greens with the team’s second. Stephen on getting the ball in the area took a first time shot which took a slight deflection off a FC Goa defender and landed over the keeper Antonio, 2-0.
