STATE OF THE ART PALZOR STADIUM, GANGTOK (SIKKIM)

ABOUT THE STADIUM

The stadium was built at a cost of Rs 30 crore by the Government of Sikkim. The All India Governor’s Gold Cup Football Tournament is played at this venue. The stadium has a capacity of 25000 and other facilities include a multi gymnasium, cafeteria ,swanky dressing rooms and a hostel for the trainees of Sikkim Sports Academy. The playing surface has underground drainage system which facilitates the ground to dry faster.

This stadium has replaced the old Palzor stadium which was also referred to as polo ground by the locals as polo used to be played in the times of the Chogyals ( Rulers of Sikkim). The present Palzor Stadium with modern facilities is in sharp contrast to the sandy polo ground of the yester years with wooden galleries similar to the ones at Mohun Bagan and East Bengal grounds but some of the locals still feel that the old Palzor Stadium had a charm of its own where many great players used to come and enthrall the spectators in the All India Governor’s Gold Cup.
