JCT 2nd Victory in away match
|
30.11.2007 : Nabarun Mukherjee:East Bengal tasted their maiden defeat in the hands off JCT when they were
routed by the mill men 3-1 in a one-sided match today here at Salt Lake Stadium,
Kolkata. The mill-men, who were leading by a solitary goal in the first half
converted two more in the second half, while the consolation goal of East Bengal
was scored by Edmilson through a penalty.
In one of one of the worst matches that East Bengal has played so far in this
season, Coach Subrata can be sure of having such similar nightmares,
(if not more!) when they will face the Goan teams in their home turf in the next
month, if some overhauling of the defence is not done immediately. With both
Suresh and Surukumar out of the match due to injury problems, both Debabrata
and Madhab looked too brittle to resist the onslaught of Edu, Marcos and Sunil
Chettri, who with their speed and superior physical endurance ripped through the
East Bengal defence time and again.
Both teams started cautiously not to concede goal at the first instance, but JCT
utilizing their wings gradually gained control over the midfield. Visibly more fit and
strong, JCT surely had territorial advantage over their rivals in the first session.
That the foreign recruits of JCT viz Edu, Julius and Marcos are far superior than
their counterparts were amply proved when in the 43rd minute of the first half,
Brazilian Edu blissfully put the ball inside the nets from a free kick taken by Marcos
from just outside the box. (0-1).
East Bengal tried to come back in the game in the second half, but except for a
few moves did little to mend the mistakes. It was on a counter attack that they
got their maiden goal when Edmilson, getting a ball from fellow teammate, while
racing towards the goal was wrongfully tackled by Julious Akpale, rightly to be
awarded a penalty. This time Edmilson did no mistake to put the ball inside the
nets (1-1). Just as every body hoping for an East Bengal comeback, in the 59th
minute of the game, a frikick off Marcos from near the rival penalty box found
unguarded Edu, who wasted little time to put it into the nets, as the entire
defence including goalkeeper Abhra looked spellbound at the sudden speed of
the event (1-2). Truly, a goal treat to watch.
East Bengal, by bringing in Mukasi and Meheraj in places of Dipankar and Mehetab
respectively tried a last fightback, but perhaps today was not their day. The last
nail was placed in their coffin by non other than Edu himself, when Sunil Chettri
beautifully dodged out Bolaji and essayed a measured cross to Edu ,who beat
Madhab and Abhra and placed it into the nets (1-3).

2nd Successive defeat of Mohun Bagan in I - League
|
29.11.2007 - Nabarun Mukherjee:Mohun Bagan conceded their second successive defeat in the
1st I-League as they were humiliated by the new entrant Viva-Kerala by a clear
margin of 3 goals to 1, here at Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata today. Playing in 3-5-2
formations for the first time in the season, perhaps Mohan Bagan played one of
their worst matches with the entire team looking fragmented and confused from
the very start of the match. The forwards lacked cohesion, the midfielders tried
in vain to take control of the mid-field and the less we talk about the defence,
the better. Though most of the fans lost their faith in Odafa and Douglas, one
wonder why they are still in the good books of the coach!
From the very beginning of the game Viva Kerala looked more composed and using
their wings carried out repeated attacks at the opponent citadel. Both of their
foreign recruits - Babatunde and Wisdom Abbey successfully switched flanks and
the vulnerable Mohun Bagan defence looked helpless in repelling their onslaught,
resulting the away team taking a clear 2-0 lead within the first half, courtesy
Babatunde and Wisdom Abbey.
Mohun Bagan did try to come back in the game in the second session but the
weak midfield combination coupled with occasional defensive lapses stood in their
way to comeback. Carlos tried every available weapon in his hand, but it was
once more proved that his team lacks a match winner except Barreto- whose
absence was so dearly felt by the Mohun Bagan fans. Except for some occasional
chances, one of which was converted to goal by Isfak Ahmed- who came in the
field in place of Dharamjit in the early minutes of the second session, there was
hardly any positive move by the Mohan Bagan forwards that came near to scoring.
Rather in the 40th minute of the second session a structured move by Viva Kerala
saw Birua Bimal floating in a beautiful cross from the right with agile Wisdom
Abbey nodding the ball into the nets even more elegantly (3-1).
With no win from two consecutive matches, Mohun Bagan are in perilous state
and must have to improve upon their results to stay in the league.

JCT stunned Mohun Bagan in I - League beginning
|
26.11.2007:Nabarun Mukherjee :
Kolkata League Champions Mohun Bagan received a nasty blow from the Mill-
men when they were beaten by 2-1 by the Punjab Lions - JCT, in their inaugural
match here at Salt Lake Stadium today. The match proved dear to the Mohun
Bagan not only in terms of lost points, but at the same time, their most
dependable teammate – Barretto got injured and will be out of the match for quite
some time.
JCT drew first blood in the 13th minute of the game when from a free kick from
around 15 yards away from the goal line; Eduardo Dsilva cunningly swerved a right
footer inside the nets ( 1 - 0). Had the goalkeeper have been more agile, perhaps Mohun
Bagan would not conceded the goal.
Thereafter Mohun Bagan tried to come back in the match, but the weak midfield
combination stood in their way to success. Douglas was far from his hey days,
and Dharamjit, Venky and substitute Lalkamal faltered to gain control of the
midfield. Moreover with virtually no wing play, and both Baretto and Baichung
controlled with zonal marking, JCT coach Sukhwinder, a veteran of many wars,
surely scored over Carlos, resulting Mohan Bagan never gaining full control of the
game through the match.
The Mohun Bagan defence, too stood to its reputation of faltering at crucial
moments and taking full advantage of their weakness, Eduardo Dsilva, in the 32
minutes of the second session scored his second goal from a rebound off goal
keeper Shilton ( 2 - 0), virtually sealing the fate of Mohun Bagan for a come back.
Mohan Bagan got a consolation goal ( 2 - 1 ) through S.Venkatesh in the extra minutes
(90+3) of the second session but that was too late for the Mohan Bagan
supporters to go home happily.

East Bengal starts winning race in I - league
|
25.11.2007 :Nabarun Mukherjee :As the early evening mist began to settle on the ground amidst the sky blushing
in the tender beams of full moon, it is the sheer experience of the kolkata giant
East Bengal that prevailed over the youthful exuberance of Viva- Kerala, as they
wrapped up three important points from their first match by defeating their rival
by a brace of goals here at Vidyasagar Krirangan, Barasat.
That is what the match is in a nutshell. But if we go a deep into the match, it is
one move of the East Bengal Coach Subrata - replacing Mukasi by Ashim in the
21st minute of the second session, that not only saved the match for his team,
but, perhaps, had put an end, at least for the time being, to some unpleasant
queries about the much talked about internal dispute amongst the footballers of
the team.
East Bengal started the match in style with the wings steadily supplying the balls
to the forwards and the medios gradually taking over the control of midfield. Nabi
had a wonderful match today, and so did Jayanta also, who took extra load to
keep the supply line active from the very beginning. However it was the star
attraction Mukasi, who disappointed the crowd that had gathered in hordes to
watch the glimpses of ‘world –class’ football from him! Although coach Subrata
preferred Mukasi to play in the forward, he struggled throughout the match to
find his ideal position resulting in Edmilson finding him alone in the goalmouth.
Moreover, strongly marked by Viva-Kerala’s Ebin Rose, Edmilson too found it
difficult to open the goalmouth only to increase the worries of the East Bengal
coach and fans.
Viva Kerala with their limited resources played positive football and never looked
to be down with the name of their fancied opponent. Unlike the other smaller
teams who seems happy to clinch a point from their away match, Sreedharan’s
players tried to put some good shows and had their share of chances especially
in the early minutes of the second session when East Bengal had a close shave
as Abhra faltered to clear a long ranger from Wisdom Abbey.
With the introduction of Dipankar Roy in place of injured Surukumar and Mehatab
in place of Meherajuddin in the second half, East Bengal attack gathered
momentum. Alvito, who wasn’t that bright in the Ist session, gradually began to
blossom in style and so was Ashim- who with his penetrative football began to
disturb the Kerala defence at regular intervals. It was from one such move, Ashim
getting on to a loose ball in the midfield beautifully swerved a cross inside the box
and as the goal keeper missed the flight, Edmilson, following the ball like an eagle ,
made no mistake to put it inside the nets (1-0). Hardly three minutes had past
and the East Bengal spectators were settling in after their rejoice, they stood
testimony to a Alvito beauty, whose powerful left foot-in swing shot taken at
least 25 yards away from the goal entered the nets from the extreme top – right
of the post much to the dismay of the goalkeeper (2-0) - a goal for which one
can come to the field even after walking for a thousand miles!

Mohun Bagan : the winner of India's No.1 Derby
Sahara IFA Kolkata Premier Divn. return League
|
06.11.2007: NABARUN MUKHERJEE:As the East Bengal players hastily
pushed their way towards the dressing room after the match amidst the cacophony
of the Mohan Bagan fans who had gathered in mass and rejoicing in ecstasy after
avenging their defeat in the hands of their arch rival in the recent Federation Cup,
one was wondering whether Dewali had arrived a few days earlier here at Salt
Lake Stadium, Kolkata. Such was the electrifying mood of the Mohan Bagan fans
- and so they deserve certainly, as the Carlos brigade more or less clinched the
Sahara Premier League title 2007 when they defeated East Bengal by a brace of
goals-courtesy one and the only –Barretto.
Mohan Bagan, who were rightly rewarded for holding on to their nerves in this
tense encounter, now are at the top of the table with 30 points from 12
matches with the nearest rival East Bengal racing behind with 25 points from
equal number of matches.
East Bengal, however, made a decent start and hardly five minutes have passed,
Edmilson wasted a golden opportunity as his shot went straight in the hands of
the keeper Shilton. Shilton had a memorable day beneath the bars, as he carried
out quite a crucial saves, which, if otherwise, would have paid dear to his team.
Gradually the East Bengal medios, revealing greater ability to pace their game,
took control of the midfield but found faltering as usual when it came to scoring .
The wings were also maneuvering in a rhythmic manner as East Bengal consolidated
its territorial advantage over their rivals. But just as Surukumar started to become
effective, much to the comfort of the Mohan Bagan fans he unfortunately injured
himself while going for a flying header near his own goalmouth, only to be replaced
by Soumik Dey. (36 min)
Mohan Bagan relied mostly on counter attacks in the 1st session of the game, and
did get some chances, but that was more due to the mistake of their rivals than
their own credit. Mohan Bagan midfield never looked comfortable in the earlier part
of the game and lack of combination between Venkatesh and Douglas virtually
disrupted supply of balls to Barretto and Baichung, thus rendering them mere
spectators in the Ist session of the game.
With the exit of Surukumar, Mohan Bagan gradually came back into the game in
the second session playing with lot more maturity and application of mind.
Stretching the game to the flanks, which, until, they were not, Mohan Bagan
played some penetrating football and the rival defence was unable to keep check
of Baretto, who with his sudden mobility and intelligent positional football rattled
the opponent defence. In the 50th minute of the game, one such cross at the
goalmouth from near the midfield by Dharamjit, saw Barretto forcing in to make
some space between Suresh and Bolaji and blissfully placing the ball inside the
nets (1-0).
|

|
| |
Back by the solitary goal, East Bengal never came back into the game as Mohan
Bagan steadily increased numbers in their defence and midfielder Venkatesh taking
the extra initiative followed by the forward line showing more determination near
the rivals goalmouth.
Edmilson had an unassuming game today except that of a few goal-bound shots
and crucial misses. East Bengal had their best chance in the second half, when a
shot by Edmilson from a close range was brilliantly saved by Shilton in the 80th
minute of the game. As the game drifted to its end, much against the pace of the game, in the extra
minutes, Baichuing showing sheer opportunism caught hold of a loose ball from
the midfield and as he braced towards the rival goal, he was wrongfully obstructed
by keeper Subrata Paul, to be rightfully awarded a penalty by Referee S.Suresh,
who had full control of the game throughout the match. Baretto, much to the joy
of Mohan Bagan fans made no mistake to convert the penalty (2-0).
In the first leg of the league Mohun Bagan had won 4-3.

Manchester United Excited About India
|
05.11.2007: Manchester United are excited about the prospect of getting
involved with Indian football. As revealed by Goal.com last month, the English Premier League champions are to
open a pilot training scheme in Goa, one that could be extended throughout the
rest of the nation. Assuming it is successful, the club could establish Manchester United Soccer
Schools (MUSS) all over India.
Academy boss and former player Brian McClair believes there is massive potential.
"In India there has been massive investment in sports like cricket and hockey for
years,” McClair told The Independent On Sunday.“Sport is a way of life in India, and now there are signs that football can also be a
big part of it too. It will grow, I am hopeful eventually we could have Indian
players in the Premiership, although this could take five to 10 years."Goa is one of
the most football-crazy parts of India and like elsewhere in Asia, there is huge
interest in the Premier League in the former Portuguese colony.
"You see the majority of youngsters - and a lot of adults too - walking around in
football shirts. Not just Manchester United but other top clubs and other countries,
notably Portugal, but the Premiership is by far the most popular," McClair said.
"Obviously the skills we evaluate are quite basic, but football is played in schools,
and I visited a couple where there was quite skilful manipulation of the ball. They
seem to have a natural balance and flair."Historically, youngsters in India, and to some extent those from the Asian
communities in Britain, have focused on other sports. But over the next decade
this is likely to change."
McClair’s comments were echoed by Dale Hobson, MUSS’s international
development director."If you had just one Indian in the Premier League, football would go into the s
tratosphere there. The scope of Indian football could be colossal,” Hobson said.Print Sto
