Premier Skills : Premier Skills is a collaborative project between the Premier League in the UK and the British Council, which uses football as a tool to help develop both community coaching and English language skills. The programme trains aspiring sports coaches and youth leaders to return to their own communities and enhance their existing football sessions, whilst also developing their leadership skills and a greater understanding of the role football can play in tackling other social issues.

Kolkata Goalz is a Premier Skills project inspired by a partnership initiative of the Premier League and the Metropolitan Police London. Kolkata Goalz is an initiative of Kolkata Police, British Council and other partners.

Premier League trainers Rubel Ahmed (from Active Communities Network) and Craig Bell (from Manchester City FC) were in Kolkata from 20-25 April to deliver two training programmes - Train the Trainers from 20 to 22 April for the club coaches and co-ordinators and Young Leaders training from 23 to 25 April for some of the senior young participants from the Goalz venues. This training was held at the Kolkata Police Alipore Bodyguard Lines, 7 D H Road, Kolkata 700027.

Kolkata Goalz: Vision :: To create safer, stronger and more respectful communities through the development of young people's potential.

Objectives

To engage young people aged 12-18 years in a range of constructive activities.
To break down barriers between the police and young people.
To reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in targeted neighbourhoods.
To increase the playing, coaching and officiating opportunities for participants
To create routes into education, training and youth development
To encourage volunteering within projects and throughout the target neighbourhoods
To increase young people's interest in and connections with the professional game

Launch of Kolkata Goalz Cup 2013 football tournament

The British Council, the Premier League and all its partners launched the Kolkata Goalz Cup 2013 tournament at 10.30 a.m. on Friday 26 April 2013 at the Police Athletic Club ground in the Maidan.

Mr Surajit Kar Purkayastha, IPS, Commissioner of Police launched the Cup in the presence of senior officials from the British Council, Kolkata Police, Kolkata Municipal Corporation, the Football Federations and the participating Clubs. Premier League trainers Rubel Ahmed and Craig Bell were also present, as well as about 400 children from all the Goalz teams that will be participating in the tournament.

On 26.4.2013 The match that kicked off the tournament was between Mohun Bagan Goalz team vs East Bengal Goalz team (under 14). The match was a well-fought out draw, with no goals.

The Commissioner of Police felicitated the representatives from each of the clubs including the Premier League trainers, encouraging the boys to "play and be strong". Those present included Sanjay Wadvani, British Deputy High Commissioner, Sujata Sen, Director British Council East India, Debashis Kumar, MMIC Kolkata Municipal Corporation and Subrata Datta of the Indian Football Association (IFA).

Craig Bell, from Manchester City FC, presented the commissioner with a jersey worn and signed by Manchester City star Sergio Aguero. The tournament, which involves youngsters trained under Kolkata Goalz, will have the rest of the league matches from 26 April to 29 June. The semi-finals will be played on 2 and 3 July, culminating in the final on 6 July 2013.

Kolkata Goalz is a Premier Skills project, developed from the successful model in the UK known as Kickz, a community cohesion project that builds barriers between young people in high deprivation areas and the local authorities through sport.

Over the last two years Kolkata Goalz has been operational in 12 venues across Kolkata (four having just been added), covering 24 police station jurisdictions and reaching out to 600+ (12-18 years) young people involved in weekly football training sessions, drawing and cultural programmes. Additional club activities for the participants range from local health awareness campaigns, extra English teaching (delivered by the British Council) and participating in tournaments.

The project is led by the Premier League and the British Council, in association with the Kolkata Police, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, All India Football Federation and Indian Football Association (West Bengal) and delivered by nine India Premier League Clubs - Mohun Bagan Athletic Club, East Bengal Club, George Telegraph Sports Club, Mohammedan Sporting Club, Police Athletic Club, United Sports Club, Aryan Club, Dalhousie Athletic Club and Kalighat Milan Sangha Football Club.

East Bengal and George Telegraph won the Kolkata Goalz 2012 u-15 and U-18. Kolkata Goalz is a project by Kickz, today organized the final of their month long football tournament at East Bengal Club ground, Kolkata. The project is well supported by the FA Premier League, British Council, Kolkata Police, Kolkata Corporation, AIFF, and the IFA.

The tournament is divided into two age groups - U 15 and U 18. The main target is to identify the young boys with the higher football potential. The final was witnessed by a host of footballers like Ex-Nigerinal Footballer Chima Okerey, Ex- East bengal and current Pune FC Goalkeeper Abhra Mondal, East Bengal Player R. Vasum, Ex India International Monoranjan Bhattacherjee, Bhaskar Ganguly and Current East Bengal asst. Coach Ranjan Chowdhury.

Mr Sovan Chatterjee, Hon'ble Mayor of Kolkata, Mr Debasish Kumar, MMIC (Parks & Sports), Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Mr Debasish Roy, IPS, Additional Commissioner of Police (III), Honorary General Secretary East Bengal Club, Kalyan Majumdar, Ms Sujata Sen, Director British Council, East India, Mr Sanjay Wadvani, Deputy High Commissioner (Eastern India), British Deputy High Commission, Mr Stephen Brice, Deputy Head of Mission, British Deputy High Commission were present at the prize distribution ceremony. Mr Madan Mitra, Hon'ble Minister of Sports was also present.



Bengal Sports Minister Madan Mitra in his address assures to provide all sorts of help to the organizers. In an existing battle in the first final of the U 15 group between East Bengal and Mohammedan Sporting, the juniors of the red and gold won by 3-2 in the tie breaker as the first half ended goalless. The scorers for East Bengal Club Goalz were Ashish Kar, Prabhas Kamal and Debnath Mondol. The scorers for Mohammedan Sporting Club Goalz were Suman Das and Sujit Das. Santosh Thakur, the goalkeeper of East Bengal has been declared Man of the Match.



In the second final of u-18 category, Kolkata Premier League team George Telegraph defeated East Bengal by 2-0 to lift the trophy. Sk. sunny scored both goals for George Telegraph and declared Man of the Match.

The tournament involves the youngsters who have been trained under Kolkata Goalz: A Premier Skills project delivered in partnership with the above organisations, which uses football to bring communities together and engage young people in a range of constructive activities.

Kolkata Goalz is now "live" in Park Circus Maidan (Police Athletic Club), Nawab Ali Park (Mohammedan Sporting Club), Ripon Square Park (United Sports Club), Christopher Park (George Telegraph Sports Club), Hrishikesh Park (Mohun Bagan Club), Kashia Bagan Park (East Bengal Club), Rabindra Kanan Park (Mohun Bagan Club) and Deshapriya Park (Aryan Club).

Today the Kolkata football fans who were present at East Bengal ground also observed an another historical event which happend in East Bengal Ground during the Final. After a gap of 50 years, arch rival Mohun Bagan's 100 feet wide flag hosted at East Bengal Ground alongwith other Participating teams Mohammedan SC, Proyag United, Police AC, George Telegraph as the rule of the competition.



Both the Kolkata giants East Bengal and Mohun Bagan shared the same ground till 1962. After that Mohun Bagan shifted their Club tent to the CFC ground and Another ancient club Aryan shared with East Bengal came from Mohammedan Ground.
