Who was the first ever Kolkata Footballer, to play in Europe?The answer is Md. SALIM, a barefooted Footballer of Mohammedan SportingClub PROFILE He played for Mohammedan Sporting from 1934 - 1938 . His Spearheading attck,Ball control, Dribbling, correct passes,perfect lobs was winning the hearts of Mohammedan Sporting Supporters.and in this period his team Mohammedan sporting was the winner of Kolkata Football league continiously for 5 times .In the year 1934 Mohammedan Sporting won Kolkata Football league for First Time in Club's history for outstanding performance of Salim . He was a regular member of first eleven who won Kolkata Football League Title from 1934 - 1938. After winning the League Title in the year 1936 and before the next Tournament IFA Shild Chinise Olympic Team came to play two exhibition match against All India XI.It was the first visit of foreign Team in Kolkata. Salim was selected fro the Indian side and played first match very well and selected for the 2nd Match against the China team . But in the mean time Salim had vanished.He was with his friend Hasheem in the ship S.S City of Cairo and sailed on its way to England . After a few days in London ,Haseem took Salim to Glasgow and Celtic Park of Scotland.Celtic Manager Willie Maley finally agreed to give him a trial .Bare footed Salim demostrate his skill in six different ways before one thousand club members and three registered coaches. They were astonished and decided to include him in the playing XI for the forthcoming matches against Hamilton F.C. In his first match for Celtic F.C against Hamilton ,he was exceptional and Celtic Won the game by 5 - 1.Then In his 2nd match against Galston F.C Salim's New Style of Juggling routed Galston F.C by 7 - 1. He was the first barefooted Indian player who played in England and his performance praised by Queen Elijabeth Although he was a barefooted Indian Footballer but offered a professional contract to play in Germany.However his homesickness returned him to his native City Kolkata in the year 1937 and again played for his Club Mohammedan Sporting.
