SEMI FINAL SHOWDOWN : PERU VS URUGUAY :- After witnessing some of the most shocking events turn into reality, the Copa America structure now looks like a barren island without the challenge of teams like Brazil and Argentina. Both the teams faced a surprising exile after dissapointing defeats to Uruguay and Paraguay.
The scenario that stands is a pretty exciting one as the three of the four teams qualified for the semis were considered as Underdogs looking weak on the paper. But the amount of unpredictability just turned the picture of the entire tournament. Without further bragging lets analyse the first such piece of action between Uruaguay and Peru.
Peru (Road to the semi finals) :- With an average squad , Peru was chalked off from being a leading contender in the tournament. But after several years of poor results, the Peru team finally gained prominence and an effort of tactical discipline saw them book a semi final berth much to the credit of their coach Sergio Markarian. Peru started the campaign with a 1-1 stalemate against the mighty Uruguay.
The Hamburg marksman Paulo Guerrero gave an early led to the Peruvians before the lead was cancelled out by Luis Suarez. The second group game gave a sigh of relief to the supporters after earning a 1-0 victory against Mexico courtesy of a goal by Guerrero improving his tally in the tournament. The third group game finally saw the team stutter to a 1-0 defeat against Chile. Thus after three matches the scenario of the group was something like this :-
Thus Peru finished third in the group only to qualify being one of two best teams in the third place registering a quarter final berth against Colombia. The quarter final tie looked one sided on tabloids with everyone rooting for an easy Colombia win after their successful showing in the group stages.
But after Colombia missed decisive chances along with a penalty in the game, Peru started to rekindle their hope to reach the semi finals. The extra time show which was dominated by Peru from start till the finish gave them two decisive goals via Carlos Lobaton and Juan Manuel Vargas wrote the unthinkable script helping the nation to reach the semi finals once again.
Peru have been a consistent sort of a side grinding out vital results at important times. Till now Peru have converted 970 successful passes in the tournament but the chances coverted from the possession is less as only 19 shots have been registered on target. The defence have looked solid at times with 73 successful tackles to prevent the opposition from raiding the penalty area. But the situation upfront have looked grave with only Paulo Guerrero saving the team at crisis times being the only forward to score for them.
The midfield have been solid with Vargas playing the ideal captain's role supported by Lobaton ,Carrillo. The defence have looked solid conceding only 2 goals so far with two clean sheets. Walter Vilchez have been the most consistent passer in the team with 101 successful passes and Paulo Guerrero have been the player for them so far with 2 goals and dominating the crossing department.
Meeting their group mates in the semi final will give them the amount of predictability they need about the opposition but at the same time their attackers will have to rise to the occasion preventing another penalties.
Uruguay (Road to the semi finals) :-
After a successful World Cup campaign, the Charruas looked to carry their impressive form heading into the Copa America tournament. With the likes of Suarez ,Forlan among their ranks, high expectations was placed on the shoulders of Oscar Tabarez to bring home a record 15th Copa America title.
The group stage began on a disappointing note after a 1-1 stalemate against Peru with Suarez saving the team from an upset. The second match saw the Charruas take the lead in the 53 minutes via Alvaro Pereira only to lose the lead in 63mins with Alexis Sanchez scoring for Chile. Thus the third match had the decisive say in their qualification as Uruguay earned a 1-0 win against Mexico with Alvaro Pereira again on the scoresheet.
The Charruas finished second in the group as highlighted above locking horns with Argentina in an epic quarter final clash. Uruguay started the quarters on a bright note after Diego Perez scored in the opening 5 mins. But the wonder pass of Messi found Higuain unlocking the Uruguay defence to help the team get back in the match. After host of red cards the match rumbled on to the penalties where all the five Uruguay players found the target with Tevez missing for Argentina.
Thus Uruguay reached the semi finals after a topsy turvy ride in the tournament. Till now 844 passes have been converted successfully by the team . But the star power upfront have looked weak with just 20 shots on target. The defence have looked solid helping the team on many decisive occasions. Alvaro Pereira have been the highest scorer for them with 2 goals followed by Luis Suarez and Diego Perez bagging 1 each.
The main source of strength for them have been the solid reflexes of their keeper Fernando Muslera who was brilliant in the tournament especially in the quarter finals against Argentina with 8 beautiful saves. Maxi Pereira have been the most consistent possession holder for them with 109 successful passes with Forlan dominating in the section of being the best crosser with 6 successful crosses.
Uruguay is yet to see the full force of their team being unleashed on the pitch with full potential. All the ties have seen a side which can win but lacking the attacking flair. Thus the semi final needs to be a stage where finally the people see Uruguay as the team which caught each nation by surprise in the World Cup.
Uruguay vs Peru (Copa head to head)
The first time both the sides locked horns in Copa America was back in 1927 at Lima with Uruguay thrashing them by 4-0. The first Peru victory came after 12 years in 1939 with a 2-1 victory breaking their Charrua jinx at last.
Till date Uruguay and Peru have clashed 19 times (Including this year) with Uruguay winning 11 times and Peru 6 times. 3 matches have faced the frustration outcome of stalemates. 65 goals have been scored with Uruguay scoring 40 goals and Peru 25. The last result was a 1-1 draw in this year's group match .
Thus the semi finals await as yet another chapter is going to be engraved in the history of this rivalry.
