3RD PLACE PLAY-OFF : CHANCE FOR HITMEN TO PROVE A POINT ..

It is usually the forgotten game of the World Cup football, but Saturday's third place play-off features four of the best strikers to have graced the fields at this tournament. Germany, Uruguay, who will fight for the third prize, have between four of the top scorers at the World Cup.

The two Germans, Miroslav Klose and Thomas Mueller, along with Uruguay's doubtful starter Diego Forlan have scored four goals each...While Luiz Suarez, whose hand prevented Ghana from being the first African side to qualify for the semis of the World Cup have scored three.

The game is also about the fight between Europe and Latin America..It represents a last chance for the men from Montevideo to restore some pride for one of the world's two football powerhouse continents after the elimination of Brazil and Argentina. The sides are no stranger at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium. Uruguay ousted South Korea here in the second round while Germany lost to Serbia by a solitary goal in the first round.

The game is all about the crumbs of glory, but it holds out the prospects of a goal glut from the four man in form strikers.

Amit Roy from South Africa : WORLD CUP FEVER TO LAST A LIFETIME ..

Long after the final whistle of the World Cup blows on Sunday, the South Africans will still be feeling it. 12000 Proteas have received free tickets to watch live matches during the football extravaganza.

FIFA and its partners Coca-Cola, Sony, Adidas, Kia and Hyundai also sponsored environmental, health and education programmes to benefit the poor as part of the Ticket Fund.

The programme is the first initiative of its kind in the 80 years of the history of Soccer World Cup. Beneficiaries ranged from young children to contruction workers who built the event's stadiums around the country.

Most tickets and developmental programmes benefitted schools and pupils from remote rural areas and others from generally disadvantaged backgrounds.

The fund ran programmes focussed on health, education and environment. It is one of several uniquely linked to the first World Cup in Africa, such as the one goal programme.

Brazilians Entertain Even After the Exit..

Carlos Dunga's men have made an unceremonious exit from the last eight stage of the World Cup, but the Brazilians are still entertaining the crowd in South Africa. Its not the footballers but a group of Brazilian musicians. The musicians from Rio De Jeneiro are still travelling from one city to another to perform on stage in different fan zones before the matches.

Just before the start of the first semi final match between Nederlands and Uruguay, the Brazilian musicians performed at the New Town fan park in Johannesburg. Brazil will host the world cup football in 2014, and these musicians feel it is upto them now to make that one the most memorable one. The process should start now as FIFA 2010 is almost over.

From Johannesburg the musicians will travel to Bloemfontein and perform in stage shows on 8th and 9th July. They are planning have their final show in Sandton on the day of the Grand Finale.

FINAL MATCH TICKETS STILL AT A REASONABLE PRICE!!!!!....... .

The demand is sky high and the price too. Even after that if you need a World Cup final match ticket, you can get it. That too at a negotiable price. Not a joke. All you have to find the right people. Tickets are on sale in numbers. Argentine and Brazilian fans are selling their tickets and going back.

For a 800 rands ticket you dont even have to pay more. Thousands of Latin American fans had booked their final match tickets well in advance in anticipation that Brazil and Argentina would qualify for the final in soccer city Johannesburg.

That didn't happen as both the teams crashed out of the World Cup after losing their quarter finals against Nederlands and Germany. Though some of the fans decided to stay back for the final and spending time to see South Africa, but most of them are flying back.

Thousands of German fans had gathered at the fan zone in Johannesburg and saw the quarter final match against Argentina on a giant screen. With the form the Germans are in at the present moment, most of them are quite certain that their country will qualify for the final. These Germans are buying the final match tickets from the Argentineans and Brazilians.

So its not all over for those who doesn't have the precious final match ticket. You can still buy one at a reasonable price. All you have to find the Argentinean and Brazilian fans who are going back to Latin America.

Amit Roy's Diary : German Machine Killing....... .

Around two thousand German fans gathered at the fan zone of Johannesburg's New Town area to watch the quarter final match between Argentina and Germany. Before the start of the match Argentine fans were looking more confident in presence of their much hyped forward line.

Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez and in form Gonzalo Higuen will make the difference, the Argentine fans were pretty confident. But just after the match started it was Germany all the way and we could see the German fans dancing in front of the giant screen through out the match.

Mueller scored the first one in just the third minute of the match but the German fans were hoping to see Miroslav Klose score and touch the mark of Gerd Muller's 13 goal record for the country. Klose missed a sitter but scored a couple to make them more than happy.

After the big win against Argentina, Germans are confident to lift the world title for the fourth time. 4-0 victory against Australia, 4-1 against the mighty England and now 4-0 over the Argentines. A young German lady rightly described it "German Machine Killing."

She is right. It is indeed a killing performance from Podolski, Klose and company. From here on Spain and Nedelands will find it very tough to restrict Germany from winning the world title.

Standstill Mid-night in Johannesburg after Ghana's exit.

Constant cacophony of Vuvuzelas was on air. Everything was going alright and the Africans were expecting a tie-breaker. Then came the dramatic moment at the fag end of the second half of extra time. Luis Suarez's " Hand of God" save was quickly spotted by the referee and penalty kick was awarded to Ghana.

The intensity of Vuvuzela's cacophony went even higher. Almost everyone in the stadium was keen to witness the historic moment. Ghana getting into the semi final as the first ever African nation.

After getting the red card Luis Suarez was hiding his face while going off the pitch. The man in form Asamoah Gyan was all set to take the penalty kick. Here comes Gyan and the Ghanaian forward hit the bar and the ball went out.

Around 100 thousand present in the soccer city caught in disbelief. Few thousands in fan parks, different pubs and restaurants were shocked to see Ghana missing the opportunity to create history.

Uruguay handled the pressure well to finally sealed a spot in the semi-final against Nederlands. The former two time world champions will be without three of their regulars in the last four match due to card problem.

After Ghana's exit, the local people have almost lost interest in FIFA 2010. After watching the game in Soccercity stadium, I was coming back to my hotel, Haven't heard the noise of Vuvuzelas or the Kuduzelas this time. Johannesburg was standstill in mid-night.

World Cup Success could lure the expats to return..

There are many South African expats among the estimated half a million visitors to South Africa enjoying the World Cup at the moment, and many thousands of others spread accross the world are feeling extremely proud of the way their place of birth is hosting the event.

The Homecoming Revolution, the non profit organistaion encouraging South African skills to return, has seen an outpouring of emotion from South Africans across the globe as they watch the perception of the country change in front of their eyes.

The sentiments are echoed in every spheres of life in Johannesburg, the biggest city of South Africa. Homecoming Revolution believes that sentiments like these will see an increase in people wanting to return to South Africa in the next couple of years.

SOCCER- SOCCER ALL THE WAY..... ..

South African cricket team was playing against West Indies and a stranger sitting beside asked me, " How is it man, can you tell me the score?"....Brazil was playing against chile on the same day and the giant screen in the pub was showing that. I pointed my finger at the screen and said 3-0 as you can see. No, no, no came the reply... " I am talking about cricket", said the stranger.

Indeed I hardly had any idea that South Africa was playing West Indies and came to know about it only after he told me. I couldn't answer so is my colleague sitting beside me. Most of the South Africans sitting at the pub were alike us, who are hardly taking any interest about cricket these days. It is the same with Rugby, where even the international matches featuring South Africa going on in almost empty stadiums. Such is the interest of soccer in the southernmost country of Africa.

After the exit of the host nation, now most of the interest is on the only contender from Africa left in the event. Ghana is on a high and entered the quarter final phase in style beating the US. Now Asamoah Gyan and company will face the test of Uruguay in the last 8. The match is going to be played in Johannesburg and the tickets are already sold out.

I was going out of my hotel, just like any other day the receptionist welcomed me for the day saying " hello how is it"...but this time added a few more words..." Do you have a Ghana-Uruguay match ticket?". I didn't have an extra, so gently said...No I don't have one.

Everyone in Johannesburg is now looking for a ticket for the quarter final game between the African and Latin American nation. All of them are looking to be a part of the history where an African nation could make it to the last four of the World Cup football for the first time.

South Africa Dreaming of a Brazil-Argentina Grand Finale ..

It never happened before when the arch rivals of Latin America met in the mega final of the football's biggest battle on earth. But this time in FIFA 2010, there is still a chance of Brazil vs Argentina final.

Maradona's team is on a high after four comprehensive victories. On the other hand Dunga's Brazilian team has found their rythm which was evident in the 3-0 drubbing of Chile in the round of 16.

Around 30 thousand Argentinean fans are already there in different parts of South Africa. The number of Brazilians are even higher. Both the camp feels the world cup victory will be the sweetest if the final victory comes against the arch rivals.

If this thought is prevailing in the minds of the Latin Americans, then the local South Africans are no different. After the exit of the host nation, most of them are supporting Ghana now, but even then the Proteas are also praying for a Brazil-Argentina showdown in the final match.

Brazil is going to meet Nederlands and Argentina will lock horns against the in-form Germans in the last 8 battle. It won't be easy for both the teams of Latin America. As the Dutch and Germans have shown impeccable form in the first round as well as in the round of 16.

Inspite of that most the Latin Americans feel that the teams of Europe wont be match for them in the battle of last 8. All of them are dreaming for a perfect final at the Soccer City on 11th night.

AMIT ROY FROM SOUTH AFRICA :KRUGER-THE WONDER OF AFRICA.

Almost as much as Nelson Mandela and the Springboks, Kruger is one of South Africa's national symbols, and for many visitors, it is the must-see wildlife destination in the country. Little wonder: in an area the size of wales, enough elephants wander around to populate a major city, Zirrafes nibble on acacia tress, hippos wallow in the rivers, leopards prowl through the night and a multitude of birds sing, fly and roost.

Nearly 2 million hectares of land that stretch for 352 kilometres (20 000 square kilometres) from north to south along the Mozambique border,is given over to an almost indescribable wildlife experience.

Kruger is on of the world's most famed protected areas - known for its size, conservation history, wildlife diversity and ease of access. It is a place where drama of life and death plays out daily, with up-close, action packed sightings of wildlife almost guaranteed. One morning you may spot lions feasting on a kill, and next a newborn impala struggling to take its first step.

Kruger is also South Africa's most visited park, with over one million visitors annually and an extensive network of sealed roads and comfortable camps. For those who prefer roughing it, there are separate tracks and hiking trails. Yet, even when you stick to tarmac, the sounds and scents of the bush are never far away.

And if you avoid weekends and holidays, or stay in the north and on the gravel roads, its easy to travel for an hour or more without seeing another vehicle.

The Kruger National Park is larger than Israel. Nearly 2 million hectares of land that stretch for 352 kilometres (20 000 square kilometres) from north to south along the Mozambique border, is given over to an almost indescribable wildlife experience.

Amit Roy from South Africa : High price of tickets

Round one is over. Now the round of 16 is about to start. Price of match tickets are going sky-high and number of tourists all over the world is now prefering to watch the match on a big screen at the fan zone rather than going to the stadium.

Lot of them are spending money to go for the city tours. We have almost travelled through out the city of Johannesburg and here is our pick on the best tourist spots of the city of Joburg.

Lesedi Cultural Village : Africans say, a man without culture is just like a zebra without stripes. Unless you visit Lesedi your understanding of the African culture will be incomplete for sure. This place is a must visit spot for the foreigners. Lesedi Cultural Village is around one and a half hours drive from the heart of Johannesburg. The village is an asembly of different tribes of South Africa. The four hour trip to Lesedi helps to know the cultures of Zulu, Bosotho, Xhosa and Pedi tribes. The educational cum fun trip will end with the African Tribal song and dance along with an Africal lunch or dinner.

Sun City: Sun city is around three hours drive from the central Johannesburg and boast of almost every kind of stuff for the entertainment. The place will remind you of Disneyland in America. Sun City invites you with four world class hotels inside it. Casino, kingdom of pleasure and lost world inside it will definitely mesmerise any tourists visiting this place.

Soweto Bicycle tour: This unique tour will offer you to ride a bicycle to visit the suburbs of Soweto. Nelson Mandela's old house, Hector Pieterson Museum are among other attractions of Soweto. This place is a must visit for all those who wants to see the memoirs of the apartheid era in South Africa.

23 JUNE

Amit Roy from South Africa : Indian food..

We were driving down the Central Avenue in Johannesburg...Window was open and a gentle cool breeze knocking our faces. We drove down half road, all of a sudden a very familiar smell forced us to stop our BMW. Eyes went up at the hoarding, where the name of the shop is written in English and Hindi. Akhalwaya's store is a must visit shop for the local Indian, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis.

Basmati Rice, all forms of sub-continent spices, sweets from Kolkata... Anything can be picked at Akhalwaya's. Owner Saeed Iqbal migrated from Pakistan 15 years back and married to an Indian origin South African, Sheerin.

Iqbal set this shop around 5 years back and Akhalwaya's is now the biggest suppliers of sub-continental spices in South Africa.

Indian and Pakistani restaurants at the crown road in Johannesburg get the right blend of spices from Saeed and Sheerin. But we decided to cook ourselves rather than going at an Indian restaurant after picking up some useful ones from the Central Avenue in Joburg.

Bengali Football Mad in South Africa World Cup..

Bengalees are not known as back- packers and mostly avoid an unplanned holiday. But Subhajit Maitra is different from most of them. This 37 year old computer engineer from Connecticut in USA is travelling from one corner to the other in South Africa to watch FIFA 2010.

Subhadeep has already witnessed some five matches of World Cup football which includes the matches of Brazil, Argentina and Spain. The computer engineer who actually is from Siliguri has an intense passion for the game. It was not easy to get a leave of 15 days to see World Cup football when some one is working in a country like USA. But Subhodeep managed it as he had applied for it a year back.

The Bengalee backpacker has already travelled to Johannesburg, Cape Town and Polokwane to watch the matches... Subhodeep is now planning to go to Nelspruit, the city which is famous for the Kruger Reserve Park.

Subhodeep said " It will be a rare opportunity to see the Big five inside the largest African Jungle".. He will stay till 28th of June in South Africa and planning to visit Nelspruit before that.

An ardent Brazilian fan, Subhodeep is hopeful of Dunga's team. Will it be a Samba time in the land of Voodoo magic this time? The back-packer from Connecticut feels so.

18 JUNE

African Safari : Amit Roy from South Africa.

Lanseria is around an hour's drive from the heart of Johannesburg and boast of one of the most beautiful wild animal reserve park. These days lion's park in Lanseria is attracting huge tourists from Europe and Latin America.

Even in last year an entry ticket used to cost around 60 rands for a person. During World Cup the same went as high as 115 rands.

Apart from lions one can have the rare opportunities to watch Ostrich, Hyena, cheetahs at the same place. Before the actual Jungle Safari starts, the visitors can take a chance to touch the lion cubs. Not only that, if any one has little bit of time he can feed the giraffe. at this wild animal park.

I found out some time in between the matches at the weekend, and took the opportunity to see this amazing wild life park.

From here I will move to Durban for a couple of days....Will keep you posted from there.

Bafana Bafana fans disappointed after lost to Uruguay...

South African and Southern African soccer fans were bitterly disappointed Wednesday to see Bafana Bafana - "the boys, the boys" - humbled as Uruguay trounced the South African national team 3-0 in World Cup play.

The constant high-decibel blowing of vuvuzela horns in the Pretoria stadium died down as fans for the host team realized that South Africa would be ending the match with no goals to show for its efforts.

Tempers flared among fans and players alike when goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune received a red card and was sent off the pitch for tackling a Uruguayan striker near the end of the game, leaving the squad short one man.

DUTCH CARAVAN IN SOUTH AFRICA.....

Hundreds of Dutch football fans braved the chilly Pretoria weather to gather at the Centurion Fan Park to watch the Netherlands take on Denmark. Dancing to music to ward off the cold, the group of football lovers proclaimed their love for their home teams.

Dutch fans found it special as for the first time the World Cup has been held on the African continent. The Dutch fans knew there would be a lot of dancing and singing and all these horns making a terrible noise. But they came all out to beat the chilly climate and supported the Oranjes.

The Oranjes make up what is widely considered to be one of football's most loyal and fervent fan bases. Their distinctive, "in-your-face" orange kit hollers their presence and ardour in any location.

After watching Monday's game, the supporters would pack up and drive in a convoy of about 180 cars to Durban for the Netherlands game against Japan, and then on to Cape Town for their game against Cameroon.

Sell of Vuvuzela goes up after controversy in South Africa....

Painted ostrich eggs ---- 90-100 rands, Brazil or Argentina T-shirts 120-130 rands, for traditional South African souvenirs you have to spend even more. Most of the tourists on their visit to South Africa were trying to find out what to take back home for their family and friends. Thanks to Vuvuzela, they dont have to spend much to fill their shopping bags.

After the recent controversy around this plastic horn, the sale of Vuvuzela has gone up by far. Though Europeans are disgusted by the cacophony of the South African wind instrument, they are buying it as souvenirs.

French captain Patrice Evra and English defender Ashley Cole has complained that Vuvuzela has been a nightmare for them....But FIFA will find it hard to ban it as it might hurt the sentiments of people of the host country.

Whatever may happen, the controversy is going upward everyday, so is the sell of this African wind instrument.

South Korea beat former EURO Champion Greece....

Korea Republic started their FIFA World Cup campaign with victory when they beat 2004 EURO cup Champion Greece 2 - 0 in the Port Elizabeth Stadium. The South Koreans were the dominant in the first half but Greece Player Totosidis and Georgios missed two easy chances to score.

Huh Jung-Moo's boys scored first through a free-kick from near the left-hand corner flag. Lee Jung-Soo pounced to sidefoot home and become his country's fastest-ever scorer at a FIFA World Cup.

In the 28th minute the South Koreans missed a good chance to double their advantage as Park Ji-Sung slid a lovely ball into the feet of Park Chu-Young.

In 52 minutes Manchester United star, Park Chu-Young took ruthless advantage with his strength, control and determination in his run as he tore into the penalty area and beat Tzorvas with his left footed shot to become only the second Asian player to score in three different FIFA World Cups, having also found the net in 2002 and 2006.

Otto Rehegal side Greece, who had not managed a goal in any of their three previous FIFA World Cup games. But there was no dispute that Korea were good value for their three points.

FIFA World Cup 2010 : Amit Roy's Diary from Cape Town....

If you are not an ardent football lover and just going for a holiday in South Africa, then prepare to fall in love as South Africa's Mother City is an old professional at capturing the hearts of people. And who wouldn't swoon at the sights of beautiful table mountain. Its summit draped with cascading clouds and its flanked with unique flora and vineyards, its base fringed with golden beaches....Would make you feel you are in heaven.

For the FIFA 2010, the city has made a bold architectural statement in the new green point stadium, complemented by improved infrastructure. If you are carrying a world cup ticket, you can take a look at that...Non football travelers have plenty in their hand too. From the brightly painted facades of the Bo-Kaap and the victorian bathing chalets of Muizenburg, to the contemporary Afro-chic decor of its guest houses, restaurants and bars. This metropolis will definitely mesmerize you.

Balancing out Cape town's splendid assets are some pretty obvious flaws. One academic dubbed this the most unequal city in the world. Looking at the mansions of Constantia side by side with shacks of crossroads you'd be tempted to agree, but that is probably not the entire story.

Capetonians don't lack charity or compassion and there is a can-do spirit that results in many small miracles being achieved in the city. Above all it's a multicultural experience where everyone has a fascinating, sometimes heart breaking story to tell..... When the time comes to leave, you may find your heart breaking too.

But I have just arrived and witnessed the Uruguay- France match....Its still a long way to go and I want to enjoy my stay in Cape Town.
