In a boost for Indian football, premier league giants Chelsea Football Club today said they are closely watching the Indian market to find like-minded corporate partners. "We want to enter the Indian market with grassroots level engagement.
Chelsea FC does not want to come to India just to play a match as we are committed to development of football in this country," Ben Wells, Club''s head of marketing, said while speaking at the International Football Arena (IFA) round-table here today. The gathering discussed at length the ways to increase awareness level across India to make football viable for investments, merchandising and international partnering. National team coach Bob Houghton said "in order to develop and train our team, it is imperative that we infuse technical knowhow from international teams and not from international clubs. We also need to consolidate our existing calendar of tournaments to make the same more competitive. India''s immediate aim is to be in the top 10 teams in Asia. The football association in tandem with various partners are working towards training and development of the current Indian team and the junior team," said All India Football Federation (AIFF) general secretary Alberto Colaco. Delhi football lovers were witness to the second of the “friendlies” prior to their foray in the AFC Asia Cup scheduled to be played at Doha, Qatar in early 2011. Indian coach Bob Houghton had taken the national side to a trip to Portugal for a few practice matches. On the way back home the side played a friendly match against Thailand in Bangkok which they lost 0-1. The return match was held today at Delhi’s Ambedkar stadium. India lost 1-2.
There were a few similarities in both the sides. Bobby Robson, the ex-Manchester United and England player handling Thailand and Bob Houghton for India. Both sides played the traditional 4-4-2.Both sides no more considered the powerhouse of Asian football. But the similarities ended there. Thailand pronouncedly more superior in terms of speed, stamina, skill and innovativeness adapted themselves quickly to a rain drenched and soggy underfoot condition at the Ambedkar stadium and were more proactive in the first quarter of play. They had more of the ball possession and tested Indian goalie, Subrata Paul in rapid succession. The essential requisite of playing the 4-4-2 is that the midfielders have to show more than enough mobility and enterprise in moving up to assist the forward line. Thailand players did just that during the entire duration. Unfortunately, the Indian midfield four were found wanting and more often than not Chettri and Rafi were numerically outsmarted. Not that Indian forwards were found wanting. A Subrata Paul goal-kick in the 19th minute was smartly back-headed by Sunil Chettri towards an onrushing Mohammad Rafi who took a snap-shop from the left extreme corner of the top-box which beat the Thailand goalkeeper to roll over the goal-line. There was no Indian player to capitalize. In the 21st minute it was Thailand’s Kirati who dashed in to take a shot which Paul did well to keep away. The next minute saw another header by Thailand’s Natapol crash against the crosspiece and go out. Incessant rain made the turf difficult for the players to keep their foothold. Surprisingly the Thailand players seemed to be more at ease than the Indians. Thy judiciously controlled the pace of the game and were never out of the comfort zone. The first half ended goalless with India lucky to maintain a clean slate although the woodwork came in Thailand’s way at least three times. As this was a friendly match both managers had agreed to six replacements during the course of the match. Perhaps both Robson and Houghton were saving them for the 2nd half. The start of the second half was a repetition of the first with Thailand pressing on the accelerator immediately on resumption. In the 49th minute, Thailand’s Thirathep trapped a nice through pass from their number 14, outsmarted the Indian central defender, Anwar Ali on the run to slot home and Thailand were a goal up. India however, did equalize in the 60th minute when a disorganized Thai defense failed to clear a Chettri header which was again headed by N. P. Pradeep that went in after touching the goalkeeper’s hand. The parity restored by India was short lived as Thailand again scored in the 64th minute as an innocuous floater inside the Indian box saw both Gouramangi and Anwar out of position and ball-watching and the Thai number 8 Kiraki met the ball excellently to score of a diving header which saw Paul clueless and without a chance. Thailand were ahead 2-1 and looked well set to come out victors. Thereafter it was sporadic attacks by both sides, with Thailand slightly more deadly. A few players were replaced from both sides. Both managers seemingly felt the need to see the reserve bench match fitness. Indian icon Bhaichung Bhutia stepped in at the 70th minute in place of Rafi and he did give a try or two. An excellent sole turn followed by a snap shot which was unluckily directed straight at the goal keeper instead perching inside the net. Again in the 87th minute an acrobatic side volley had enough power but ill-directed. The match officials added 7 extra minutes as “injury time” and in the 96th minute Bhutia was tripped on the edge of the penalty box. Bhutia furiously claiming a penalty was instead offered a direct free kick that Pradeep blasted over. With that ended the match and India’s lackluster performance with the score line 2-1 in favor of Thailand. Two more matches against African countries Namibia and Zambia are scheduled in mid-October and it will be interesting to see how the Indian players fare against the big-bodied Africans. Not much needs to be read from this friendly as India are scheduled to play three very strong sides, South Korea, Australia (both had been to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa) and Bahrain who are 5th ranked in the Asian ranking list and had beaten Japan very recently.
