Technological marvel in FIFA World Cup 2010
by : Rana Bose | Kolkata
|
The countdown to the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa is underway as the
host nation takes on Mexico on 11th June 2010. The FIFA World Cup is considered
the greatest show on earth as the viewership is more than that of the Summer
Olympic Games. Countries from all five continents vie to find a place in the final
31 (the host nation being the automatic choice to fill up the 32nd slot).
The South African football authorities have promised this World Cup Final to be
the best ever in terms of hospitality, infrastructure and clockwork precision.
The FIFA World Cup 2010 will also see for the first time the shift of 3D viewing
from cinema house to the drawing room. From James Cameron’s Avatar one will
leap-frog to the world of the Drogbas, Messis and the Ronaldos. But this technical
excellence comes at a handsome price. The aspiring viewer needs to procure a
new set-top box and a 3-D television as well. To watch 3D, customers will also
require a new ’3D Ready’ TV. Related Links 3-D has been around for decades —
the first 3-D movie Bwana Devil promised “a lion in your lap” and “a lover in your
arms” in 1952 but the technology (and the glasses one has to wear) stayed
chunky and unglamorous.
But now broadcasting advances and more sophisticated TV sets mean the set
manufacturers and TV executives think 3D TV is in the home is more than an
illusion. Top TV makers including Sony, Panasonic, LG and Samsung featured 3D s
creen advances in Las Vegas. Top of the 3D range was Toshiba’s ZX900 series
CELL TV, which promises to convert two-dimensional images into 3D in real time,
so users can watch everything from sports to video games and previously
recorded shows in 3D. The Cell system boasts 143 times the processing power
available in current TV models.
Now it is much more sophisticated, but 3-D TV sets do not come cheap: in most
cases they will cost £200-£300 more than comparable LED or plasma TV sets,
analysts estimate. Toshiba’s CELL TV, which is expected to hit US stores in the
autumn, is likely to retail at a price close to the $10,000 it sells for in Japan.
|
|
At last week's International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, electronics
manufacturers from Sony to Samsung to Panasonic announced the launch of new
3D HD flat-screen TVs, with the first products likely to be on sale in Australia in
the lead-up to the FIFA World Cup in June.
Sony, which is a sponsor of the soccer World Cup, will also demonstrate its 3D
technology in June by showing match highlights in 3D at a live site in Sydney,
one of seven it will establish around the world.
|
|
The expense might be quite a hurdle for a lot of consumers who have only just
recently shelled out for an expensive new high definition TV set. Equity anlayst
Knight Chang at the Panasonic stand said: “It looks great, and there’s no doubt
it’s wonderful to look at, but the price may scare people away.” In its first year of
operation, ESPN 3D is all set to show live at least 25 matches of the FIFA World
Cup 2010 as also some other major sporting events. ESPN has been testing ESPN
3D for more than two years. For example, it showed a USC-Ohio State college
football game in select theaters and on USC's campus.
The shift from 2-D to 3-D transmission is imminent and will become a permanent
feature in future broadcasts of major sporting events across the globe. All in all
promises to be a feast for the viewer’ eyes.
