India beat Al-Shaab in a friendly match at UAE

The Indian Sr.Football team today played and won the friendly match against a club side Al Shaab of UAE during their practicing camp at Dubai. The Indian side had a few important names missing in the starting line-up in the match played at Khaled bin Mohammad stadium . Subrata Pal, Rennedy Singh, Bhaichung Bhutia and Mehraj were rested and instead Subhasis Roy C howdhury, Nabi, Anthony Periera and Rahim Nabi and Abhishek Jadav were tried out initially.

The Indian team were very fluid in attack and the first chance came as early as the 3rd minute when Chetri shot over the cross-bar. The next opportunity was muffed up by Abhishek Yadav on the 17th minute when his shot was aimed not at the two sides of the goalkeeper but straight at him.

The first of the three goals that India and Sunil Chettri scored was on the 20th minute when he coolly slipped one over the head of the advancing goalkeeper Ramadan malalla after having received a measured pass from Climax Lawrence. The second goal was a couple of minutes(22nd) later when Sunil headed home a cross from Steven Dias from the right side.Al shaab Keeper Ramadan malalla was unable to resist it. (2-0)

The third and final goal for India was immediately after the lemon break and as early as the 47th minute when Sunil Chettri made a darting solo run from the middle third after having received a measured through ball from N. P. Pradeep. The custodian of Al Shaab advanced in an effort to narrow down the angle but Sunil Chetri maintained his poise and nerve to complete his hattrick of goals. (3-0)

India’s supremacy was beyond doubt as Al Shaab could not penetrate inside the Indian zone and quite a few of the Indian players kept missing chances. They did get a reducer as late as the 78th minute by Rashid Al Dosari, but by that time the match was under the total dominance of the Indian footballers.(3-1)

"I - League teams should not play in the state leagues" Hammam

In a ground-breaking move that promises to unleash the potential of Indian football, Indian League clubs will receive artificial turfs to boost their infrastructural facilities. This decision was taken at a special one-day AFC-sponsored workshop for Indian clubs here at AFC House on Friday.

The pitches are being offered to those clubs who have grounds of their own or on long-term leases from their respective state governments, under FIFA’s ‘Win in India, with India’ initiative, which was launched by FIFA President Sepp Blatter in 2007.

A decision to set up a committee, headed by AFC President Mohamed Bin Hammam, to steer Indian football into a new era of professionalism was also taken during the workshop. In attendance were key officials of several Indian League clubs while the AIFF was led by its President Praful Patel and General Secretary Alberto Colaco.

Before the discussions kicked off, Bin Hammam underlined the pivotal place of Indian football, saying development of the sport in India was vital for the progress of football as a whole in Asia. “India should be in line with other developing Asian countries and as the governing body of football in Asia, it will be our biggest achievement if Indian football takes off.” Bin Hammam also called for radical and urgent structural changes to bring Indian football on par with the best in the continent.

“The main obstacle in the development of Indian football is an unusual mixing between national and state football,” said Bin Hammam.“The AIFF should separate these two as a first step. The clubs playing in the Indian League should be separate and should not play in the state leagues.” The AFC President strongly raised the issue of revenue sharing with the 14 I-League teams. “The money generated by Indian clubs does not cover their expenses and I would like to suggest that the AIFF give the revenue generated by the I-League to the clubs for a few years so that they can re-invest in football and development of infrastructure.”

“There is also a need to start second and third division leagues and the clubs should start looking at sources of revenue generation,” he added.AIFF President Praful Patel said the time for Indian football has come and bold decisions were needed to take Indian football to the next level. “It is an opportunity for the Indian clubs to have first hand knowledge of AFC and FIFA’s thinking about Indian football. It’s our responsibility and we should put our best foot forward to develop the game in India,” he said.“Some of the suggestions will not be easy to implement but we will have to take bold decisions to take Indian football to the next level.”

Cracker fired in the field during Derby Match in Salt Lake

After 8 consecutive wins in the Sahara Premier Division Calcutta Football League today Mohun Bagan registered a 1-1 draw against Mohammedan Sporting in the Yuva Bharati Krirangan, Salt Lake. Despite the draw Mohun Bagan still remains at the top of the league table with 25 points from 9 matches whereas with 20 points from equal number of matches Mohammedan also currently secures their third position in the league table.

Mohun Bagan started the match with early attacks and as early as in the 20th minute of the first half Mohun Bagan went into the lead due to a fine goal scored by Souvik Chakraborty from a brilliant pass of Bareto. After conceding the goal Mohammedan tried hard for an equalizer and in the 28th minute from a fantastic free kick of Eduardo Escobar, Nilendra Dewan leveled the scoreline for Mohammedan. In rest of the first half Mohammedan built up the majority attacks and in one occasion Mohammedan got unlucky when another attempt of Nilendra deflected out by the post.

In the second half Mohun Bagan showed certain emergency and the team tried their best in search of the winning goal. But all the Bagan attempts were efficiently denied by the high alerted Mohammedan defence. In fact towards the end Mohammedan again put pressure on the Bagan goal but failed to cause any further harm to their opponents. Finally the match ended with 1-1 scoreline and Barreto was declared the Man of the Match.

Today during the match an unexpected event took place. A fire cracker which was threw from the gallery fell straight to the middle of the field and created panic to all the spectators present at the stadium which effected some damage in the Turf.

Earlier same type of event took place in Italy in 2005 Champions league Qr. Final match between A.C. Milan and Inter Milan . AC Milan goalkeeper Dida was hit on a shoulder and referee abandoned the game after Inter fans threw crackers onto the field at San Siro stadium. . As the punishment the Italian football association organised the re-match in a completely crowd less stadium and Inter was fined the equivalent of nearly $250,000 by European soccer’s governing body.

Today after the match both Kanti Ganguly (Hon'ble MIC-Sports, Govt of West Bengal) appealed to the Football Fans after the match not to carry such kind of fire crackers because these things are really very very dangerous. There are many other ways to show the joy in success of one’s favorite team.In that press meet Mohamedan S.C Official Iqbal Ahmed and Mohun Bagan official Atin Sen were present.

Tickets for the South Africa’s FIFA World Cup 2010

The sale of tickets for the South Africa's soccer World Cup 2010 had started from 20th February 2009. FIFA had approved the ticketing prices and the categories that are on sale for the matches to take place in the various cities of South Africa. A committee of FIFA under the chairmanship of FIFA Vice President, Issa Hayatou, has very judiciously priced the tickets earmarking a special category for the local population. The pricing ranges from Rand 136 to Rand 6143 (approx. INR 830 to INR 38000).

The low priced Category four tickets are to make up some 15% of an estimated three million purchasable tickets and will be sold exclusively to people living in South Africa, enabling those residents with low monthly incomes to attend matches. Category Four ticket holders will be seated behind the two goal posts. Category Two and Three will be near the zones close to the four corner flags and a portion alongside the pitch. The holders of Category one ticket, which are heavily priced, are alongside the pitch at the two sides.

Tickets in Categories One, Two and Three will be sold on a worldwide basis, both on the international and domestic South African market. Ticket purchases in Categories One to Three are payable in US dollars, and those in Category four in South African Rands. Most of the tickets will be sold through the Internet and lottery. For the first time, FIFA, its partners and the South African Local Organising Committee (LOC) will be allocated 1,20,000 category four tickets to be distributed to residents through a special program that will form part of a much needed social responsibility initiative.

These arrangements take into account the importance of the World Cup and cater at the same time to the needs of fans in South Africa. As in the past, tickets that are not bought by stakeholders such as FIFA member associations will subsequently be put on sale to the general public. The 32 participating member associations will be offered 12% of the purchasable tickets for each of their matches (previously 8%) in the group phase and an average 8% in the knockout phases. Because of the unusually high demand for tickets FIFA Officials have suggested that the overseas paying public wanting to see a high profile match must apply for a Category One or Category Two ticket. Although high priced, there is a fair possibility of getting a ticket and a seat for vantage viewing.

India, which has never qualified for the final rounds of a World Cup thus far, will of course not go un-represented. Despite cricket’s appeal, football still remains as the most viewed sport in the country. Football lovers, non-resident Indians and a few from India, the niche public could well be there to watch the matches. A few Bollywood stars are making plans to visit South Africa to witness the matches. Salman Khan, the cine idol and Kolkata’s Mohammedan Sporting Club’s brand ambassador and who has grown up playing the sport, is making definite plans to go and see some of the matches. Another football addict, John Abraham could also make a quick trip to that part of the continent. The matches are being staged across eight provinces and nine cities, with almost half-a-million visitors expected to experience the spectacle firsthand. While between 35 and 40 billion viewers worldwide will follow the matches live on television.

FIFA has allotted a few tickets of Categories One and Two to the All India Football Federation (AIFF) as it is a non-participating affiliate. Unconfirmed sources and grapevine suggest that the tickets allotted are as follows –

For the inaugural match – 10 tickets

A South African trip is immensely rewarding for a spectator for the World Cup. It is an excellent holiday destination. Besides having a ringside view and watching the performances of the top class footballers of the likes of Ronaldo, Messi, Beckham, Kaka and Henri, wild life tourism is also a major attraction. The game lodges guarantee sightings of the “Big Five” - the lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard. While Cape Town, its premier tourism destination, has the vibe of a big city with lots of scenic beauty, good food, terrific shopping, and adventure activities such as the highest bungee jump off the Bloukrans Bridge and shark cage diving among others! Other attractions in South Africa include Ushaka Marine World in Durban, Sun City, Johannesburg, the wildlife safaris in Kruger National Park, Port Harbour in Port Elizabeth, ostrich rides in Oudtshoorn, the Cango Caves adventure in Knysna.

For those of us who are not so fortunate to make the trip between June11th to July 11th of this year, there is the trusted idiot box to rely upon and also be a part of the football extravaganza.
