Al Wahda coach Josef Hickersberger warned his side not to underestimate their opponents when they host India's Churchill Brothers in their AFC Champions League play-off at Al Nahyan Stadium on Saturday.
The UAE side will be playing their second AFC Champions League play-offs match in 10 days after they defeated Syria's Al Karama 1-0 in Homs last Saturday and will be hoping for another win when they face the I-league champions. However, Hickersberger (pictured) insists his side should expect a tough encounter in Abu Dhabi and urged his players not to expect an easy ride against Churchill Brothers, who he believes are capable of upsetting the odds like Al Wahda did last week. "We should not underestimate our opponents because they could win just like we did in Syria last week," said the 61-year-old Austrian coach. "We have studied Churchill Brothers and we have some information about their players. "Our next step is to win the game as we want to advance to the group stage but we must take things one step at a time and that is the only way forward for us." Al Wahda continued their impressive run on the road with a 2-1 win at Al Ahli on Wednesday to maintain second place in the UAE League, and Hickersberger is eager for his side to show that form at home on Saturday. "We prepared for the game with a good win in the league which was an important win for us," he added. "We have studied Churchill brothers well and their tactics and hopefully our players will be ready to play against them." Al Wahda will go into the game without Brazilian midfielder Magrao (Marcio Rodrigues) while the chances of compatriot Pinga (André Luciano da Silva) featuring in the match remain uncertain. Churchill Brothers arrived in Abu Dhabi on Thursday and coach Carlos Perreira admitted that while he is wary of the strength that Al Wahda possesses, he believes he has done the sufficient homework to be able to snatch a shock result. "I’ve watched several video tapes of Al Wahda, who showed that they are a very strong side," said the Brazilian. "They have good local players and they also have good foreign players. "They claimed an away win in Syria which is a very hard place to get a win. Al Wahda are now the favourites as they are playing at home and in front of their fans. "However, we have got the necessary tactics for them and we will try to stop their midfield, who are really impressive." The winner of the match will enter Group B of the AFC Champions League along with two-time ACL winners Al Ittihad, 2008 semi-finalist Bunyodkor of Uzbekistan, who also reached the last eight last year, and Iranian outfit Zob Ahan.
