Historical Durand Cup - the glamour is back...

11.09.2009 :: Deep from Delhi : It is the oldest tournament in Asia and the third oldest in the world after the FA cup in England and Scottish premier league. Since 1888, the Durand cup has made an indelible mark in Indian football history. Organised by the Indian army, the cup have recently become a good preparatory tournament for the clubs who participate in I—league.

Although Indian coach Bob Houghton is against this tournament, the army men have always organised the Durand cup in high profile. For the last four years, the tournament have lost its charm since the big two clubs of West Bengal did not turn up for the event. This time, however, the glamour is back in the tournament with the return of East Bengal and Mohun Bagan.

With the Goanese teams also participating in the tournament, the tournament is supposed to generate a lot of interest in the mass. While I-League champions Churchill Brothers, Dempo SC, and Sporting Clube De Goa will try to dominate the proceedings, the Kolkata teams will try to revive their past glory.

Incidentally, the Mumbai teams of Mahindra United and Air India will also not lack behind while JCT Phagwara (the only team to represent Punjab) will try to make the better of all the teams. But the smaller teams like the Army XI (champions in 2005) and new I-League entrant Lajong FC might create a tournament upset anytime, it remains to be seen how the big teams shape up their formation in this event.

The cash prize for the tournament is Rs. 11 lakhs with the winners getting Rs. 5 lakhs and the runners up Rs. 3 lakhs. The tournament will also provide an impetus for the players to prove themselves as the organisers are going to hand out Rs. 10000 to every promising player.

Mohun Bagan's letter to Central Defence Minister...

10.09.2009 : Today National Club of India Mohun Bagan filed a letter to the Hon'ble Minister of Defence Mr. A.K. Anthony due to misbehave and insulting of Colonel D. Mitra (Colonel Land, Headquarters, Bengal Area) to Anjan Mitra ( Hony. General Secretarty, Mohun Bagan AC) over Telephone. The main reason of that letter is:

Mr. A.K. Antony,

Hon’ble Minister of Defence,

Government of India,

104, South Block,

New Delhi

Respected Sir,

Mohun Bagan Athletic Club is a century old Club as well as the National Soccer Club of India, having millions of fans and supporters spread all over the world. The Club operates from the Maidan Tent situated in the Maidan area of Kolkata; an area which is under the control of the Ministry of Defence. Traditionally since the last five decades; our Club has very good relations with the Defence authorities and has cooperated with them in all respects.

However we regret to inform you that since the last few days; Colonel D. Mitra (Colonel Land, Headquarters, Bengal Area) has been disturbing the gardeners and workers of our Club who are carrying out regular maintenance work inside our Club Tent premises without any valid reason. Today he rang up Mr. Anjan Kumar Mitra, Hony. General Secretary of our Club over a trivial matter and without any provocation or reason whatsoever he insulted him over the telephone.

Colonel Mitra used rough abusive language and misbehaved with this law-abiding and senior citizen in a manner unexpected from an Army Officer of his rank. He tried to bully Mr. Mitra for no fault of his. Even if there was some issue, it could have been peacefully sorted out because we believe in Fair Play both on and off the field. Colonel Mitra just misused the powers vested in him by the Ministry of Defence and behaved like a British ruler. Maybe he was trying to establish his “importance and authority”. We shudder to think if Colonel Mitra can behave like this with a Senior Club Official, how he must be ill-treating the common man.

Mohun Bagan Athletic Club is more than just a club; it is an institution in itself and a source of inspiration and joy for the millions of fans and supporters spread all over the world. Consequently this high-handedness and arm-twisting tactics has hurt their sentiments and upset them. If suitable steps are not taken, there might be public resentment, which will tarnish the image of the Army.

We request you to kindly investigate the matter and to take necessary steps and to kindly ensure that the image of the Defence is not tarnished in any manner before the sport-loving citizens of West Bengal.

Thanking you,

Yours faithfully,

Prince Rufus
Operations Manager
Mohun Bagan Athletic Club

10 - man Argentina lost to Parayuay.

10.09.2009 :Paraguay qualified for 2010 South Africa World Cup Football. It's their 4th successive World Cup finals with a 1-0 win over 10-man Argentina.

Striker Nelson Haedo scored on 27th minutes to secure Paraguay's place in South Africa next year, sending Diego Maradona's team crashing to a third successive qualifying defeat and their fourth loss in six qualifiers.

Paraguay climbed to second in the South American group on 30 points, with only goal difference separating them from leaders Brazil.

The loss was Argentina's fourth in its last five qualifiers and is sure to turn even more heat on coach Diego Maradona. Maradona said after a 3-1 loss to Brazil on Saturday that he would not resign. He told "I'm not afraid of the critics, I'm not afraid of anyone. I will keep on going and doing my work. I've been fighting since the age of 15 with you guys (journalists) and I'm 48 now,".

The loss dropped Argentina out of the top four automatic qualifying places. Argentina has 22 points and was in fifth place. The No. 5 team in South America faces a two-game playoff with No. 4 from CONCACAF for another berth.

Argentina lost midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron, one of their better players in a poor team performance, eight minutes into the second half when he was sent off for a high tackle, his second bookable offence.

10 man Bagan edge past Chirag in shootout.

09.09.2009 :: Ratul Chatterjee :A strong midfield resistance, gritty defending and coach Bencherifa’s tactical brilliance helped a 10 man Bagan edge past a strong Chirag unit via penalty shootouts in the second semifinal at the Yuva Bharati stadium in Salt Lake, Kolkata. Early on in the 10th minute, Bagan were dealt with a severe blow when their spearhead in attack, Chidi Edeh was sent off for head butting Du in a heated moment of aggression between the two players. Chidi appeared to have barged into Du while trying to fight for an aerial ball which brought down the defender and subsequently resulted in a heated face off between the two.

It was a silly thing for the striker to do considering the fact that Mohun Bagan, now having gone through to the finals, will miss him in the finals against a relatively bigger opponent in form of Churchill. After that incident, Bagan went on to the backfoot and Chirag started dominating possession and the midfield. For the rest of the half, Chirag were on the attack as the Mohun Bagan defence faced a barrage of shots and attacking moves from the left, right and centre. The first half saw the match being played majorly in the Bagan half.

With Bagan going for a 4-5-1 formation at the beginning, having lost Chidi, they used a 4-4-1 formation with marcos playing a double role of moving forward and back. Marcos Perreira took the burden of carrying the Bagan midfield single handedly on his shoulders as he served the playmaking as well as holding responsibilities in the centre. Micky fernandes provided excellent support to the brazillian in holding the opposition. Chirag constantly were looking for a breakthrough in the Bagan defence but Dipak Mondal and co held tight. Chirag’s moment of the match came in when Parminder Singh’s brilliant right footed long ranger from the left hand side of the bagan half was tipped on to the crossbar by Shilton Paul.

The deflection off the bar provided another opportunity for Chirag to find a goal but they failed. In the later half of the match, Mohun Bagan did try playing counter-attacking football with James Singh and Snehashish trying to surge forward from the wings but could not find a proper opening. Santa Kumar later came on for Snehashish as Chirag also brought in Lalawmpuia to put that extra thrust in attack but the Bagan defence stood solid. The match having progressed into extra time saw gain unexpected pace as Chirag were keen to get the winner as they clearly wanted to avoid the penalties and take count of a man’s advantage.

As the match was ending goalless in extra time, Coach Karim Bencherifa then came into the foray with a tactical masterstroke by bringing in the experienced Sangram Mukherjee in place of Shilton for the shootouts. The move paid rich dividends as the first take from Jayanta Sen of Chirag was brilliantly saved by the veteran. The save was the only one from both sides in the tie-breaker as Marcos, Surkumar, James Singh, Rakesh Masih and Snehashish chakrabarty all scored for Bagan.

Although the victory might have brought a lot of confidence in the Bagan camp before the final face off with Churchill it came with a big price of having to lose Chidi, Bagan’s spearhead in attack. It now remains to be seen whether Bagan can cope with the absence of the Nigerian upfront and can put it past their stronger opponents in the final. With Odafe Okolie back for the Goan outfit, the Bagan thinktank will have some serious brainstorming to do in unraveling their opponent’s defence in the final with Barreto, Ishfaq and now Chidi all missing from their attack as there lies hardwork for Dipak Mondal and co in stopping Odafe.

8th SEPT.... THE HISTORIC DAY FOR INDIAN SOCCER

08.09.2009 :: Rahul Sengupta :The month of September has really been good for the Indian sports fraternity. Indian football team setting up the pace by winning and defending the NEHRU Cup in Delhi , Dr. Vijay Mallya’s Force India gave the people of the biggest democracy in the world a reason to cheer after his Formula 1 team FORCE INDIA made their forces felt by clinching the second spot in the Belgian Grand Prix and last but not the least India’s Ace billiards player Pankaj Advani winning the World Billiards Championship in England.

But the perennial problem of Indian sports lies in the lack of proper sporting Infrastructure in the country. An effort by the late Sports Minister of West Bengal Mr Subhas Chakrabarty is the sole pride for the Indian Football fraternity . He conceived the dream to build a huge football stadium for the soccer loving people in Kolkata. His dream came true when he gifted the mecca of Football with the YUBA BHARATI KRIRANGAN the second biggest stadium in the world and the biggest stadium in Asia in accordance with the seating capacity.

The YUBA BHARATI KRIRANGAN popularly known as the Salt Lake Stadium has been the host to numerous national and international matches of great importance. The date of 8th September 2009 shall again go down in the history books of all soccer lovers in India as YUBA BHARATI KRIRANGAN got its parting gift from the late Mr.Subhas Chakravarty in the form of a 2 STAR rated artificial turf by the FIELDTURF TARCKET Group.

It is a watershed event in the history of South Asian sports as Kolkata became the first place in whole SAARC region where a competitive game of football was played on an artificial Astro-Turf. The occasion was the semi finals of the 114th IFA Shield between Churchill Brothers and Air India . Despite lower pressure forcing late heavy downpour through out the day the field was extremely good even after tough outings by both the teams for more than 120 minutes.

With this great reason to celebrate we can expect things to get better from now on it clearly shows India Shining.

CHURCHILL SCRAPE THROUGH TO IFA SHIELD FINAL

08.09.2009 :: S.Mitra :Churchill Brothers beat Air India today 4 - 2 (1 - 1) in penalty shootout to reach final of IFA Shield. They will play against winner of Mohun Bagan and Chirag United which will be played tomorrow.

Today, it was for the first time a match was held in artificial turf in India. The ground condition was perfect, thanks to the turf, in spite of the incessant rain in Kolkata from today morning.

Churchill had a positive start and in 1st minute itself, Kalu missed an easy header from Robert corner. In 6th minute, Naoba took a free kick that Bend like Beckham but Arnab made a spectacular save stretching completely to his right. Churchill kept their pressure and within 10 minutes got three corners, from which Durga Boro's shot narrowly missed target and in another attempt Vashum should have done better.

Against run of play, Air India took lead in 13th minute, Soccor Velho entered box via right flank and took a shot that deflected off Rowilson and completely foxed goalkeeper Arindam and went to back of net making it 1-0 in favor of Air India.

In 21st minute, Vashum took a free kick and ball went to Jaison who breaking the offside trap went for the ball but could not get his boot to the ball, missing a very good chance to score. In next minute, Dada Nabeel darted down left flank, dodged past two players and instead of passing the ball took a shot that went out of target. Just before half time, Churchill made one change bringing on Dannies Fernandes in place of Jaison Vales.

Tapan Maity had a good game for Air India. For Churchill, Robert, Vashum and Kalu played well. Churchill kept possession of the ball but mainly relied on crosses which were going in vain as they did not have Odafa today, their strikers today were not long who would have been able to meet the cross. However, nothing to take away from efforts of Air India who defended well.

In 51st minute, Kalu took a right footer that sailed over cross bar, he had got body under the ball and should have found target from that distance. In 58th minute, this time it was turn of Air India when Tapan Maity's shot went over crossbar. In 2nd half, Churchill coach changed his strategy and brought Kalu up and in a quick sucession, he made two changes bringing on Navin and Ashley in place of Naoba and Dannies.

Air India coach Bimal Ghosh also made one change bringing on H. Thomte in place of Dada Nabeel. In 72nd minute, Durga Boro was brought down by H. Thomte in front of box, Kalu took a rasping shot which deflected off wall for corner. Air India made their 2nd change replacing Henry by Harpreet Singh. Henry was lucky today not to have been blooked a couple of times.

In 76th minute, Vashum scored a brilliant goal when he got the ball near center circle, made a diagonal run and just from top of box lobbed the ball that went over Arnab's head into goal.

In 79th minute, Robert who had a very good game today took a free kick that again curled and beat everybody including goalkeeper but missed goal by a whisker. From counter attack, Tapan took a very good shot that was saved by Arindam diving to his right. In 85th minute, it was again turn of Arnab to show his good reflexes when he brilliantly saved a shot from Durga Boro from right side of penalty box.

Minutes before final whistle of stipulated time, Opara who was left unmarked inside box had full view of the goal but took a very weak shot which went straight to Arindam. Opara has good skills but does not have good speed to bother defence.

The match went to extra time, in 3rd minute, Air India had a lucky escape when from Robert's free kick, Harpreet almost scored a same side goal, his head bounced and went over bar. In 10th minute, it was Harpreet's time to make amends but his shot unluckily beat Arindam and went out.

Air India made their last change in 8th minute of 2nd half replacing Soccor Velho with Kailash Patil. 2 minutes before final whistle, Air India missed the easiest chance of the match when a cross from left side went straight across the face of goal and Opara should have stuck his foot and tried to score.

The match ended at 1-1 after 120 minutes and went to penalties.

Churchill converted 4 out of their 5 attempts while Air India could score only 2 goals, thus Churchill reached finals of IFA Shield.

4. BIJIT: Scores, took the shot left of goalkeeper, ground level, goalkeeper dived in opposite direction.

    KEY PALYERS

    McDowell Mohun Bagan

Surkumar Singh - The former East Bengal side back has performed well in his debut match for Mohun Bagan against George Telegraph. He has shown his ability in the Nehru Cup by standing as a barrier in the way of the opposition. Though he is a midfielder he often threat the defense of the opposition and creates many goal scoring chances for himself and his team mates. The Manipuri after being rejected by Kingfisher East Bengal will try to prove himself.

Chiddi Edeh - He is a kind of player who can be the reason for the victory of his team. He can be a dangerous man for his former club Mahindra United. He has already scored couple of goals in the match against George Telegraph. He can be the reason of a frown on the face of Mahindra coach.

    Mahindra United

Muritala Ali and Mohammad Rafi- Both of them scored the winner against George Telegraph and can do the same against Mohun Bagan.

East Bengal coach Subhas Bhowmik named his squad with more or less skillful and experienced players like Rahim Nabi, Mehtab Hussain and the former Indian goalkeeper Arup Debnath.

But still they stumbled right at the beginning of the match. It was a great start for Chirag who scored twice within 20 minutes from kick off. Malswama Tulunga broke the dead lock in the 7th minute by scoring a wonderful goal from a long range shot. However the goal could have been saved by the red and gold goal keeper Arup Debnath but he went quite a distance away from the goal line.

In the 18th minute the Brazilian striker Josimar dribbled past two defenders and centered the ball in the penalty area. Arup Debnath failed to catch the ball and it fell lurking in front Lalkamal. The former Mohan Bagan midfielder did no mistake and increased the lead for his team, Chirag United.

But after 3 minutes the East Bengal scored the first goal. It was scored by Riston Rodriguez as he took a superb shot from a free kick and the ball curved its way past Chirag goalkeeper, Sandip Nandy into the goal.

This was the turning point of East Bengal’s performance. From now East Bengal started to threaten the Chirag defense frequently. It was in the 41st minute when East Bengal equalized the score. The Brazilian striker, Edmilson sent a low cross in the penalty area and Mehtab Hussain gave a touch, but was saved by Sandip Nandy. However Subhas Singh did no mistake and scored the equalizer on the rebound. The 1st half ended 1-1.

In the second half the match was more interesting as both sides attacked each other frequently. In the 55th minute Edmilson of East Bengal took a powerful long ranged shot but it was only side netting.

East Bengal got another chance to take the lead but was refused by the Chirag goal keeper. The red and gold left back Saikat Saharoy crossed the ball and Bekhokhei Singh attempted a flying header but was saved by Somenath Khara.

As the age of the match increased the players were facing greater physical challenge. It was in the 75th minute when Chirag scored their third goal. It was Tulunga the same man who scored a goal from a pass from Josimar. It was his second of the match.

Rivalry of the Earth - Brazil Vs Argentina today

05.09.2009 :Argentina VS Brazil has always been a super hit Football rivalry,They will again face on Saturday in a critical World Cup qualifier, for the reason the tension will be even greater than previous ones.Brazil is the No. 1-ranked team in the world now and leads South America qualification with 27 points, followed by Chile with 26, Paraguay with 24 and Argentina on 22 just behind them are Ecuador with 20 points, Uruguay with 18 and Colombia and Venezuela with 17 each.

Only the top four teams in the group advance automatically to the finals. The fifth-place team faces a playoff with fourth-place team from CONCACAF for another berth. If Brazil wins, it could guarantee its berth at next year's finals in South Africa. Of course, the five-time champions have played in every World Cup. If two-time winner Argentina loses, it could send the country, the team and coach Diego Maradona into complete panic, with a distinct possibility that Argentina could miss its first finals since 1970.

Argentina has some of the world's best players in their line up like Messi, fellow striker Carlos Tevez, captain Javier Mascherano and fellow midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron. On the ither side, Confederationa Cup winner , Brazil has Kaka, Robinho and Felipe Melo, and Maicon attacking down the right side. They have Julio Cesar in goal, who Maradona has called the "best in the world" at his position.

The latest match between the two teams was for the 2010 World Cup qualifiers held on June 18, 2008 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Both teams drew with a final score of 0 - 0

    Bagan brushes aside George Telegraph

04.09.2009 :: RATUL CHATTERJEE,KOLKATA : Mohun Bagan AC got off a perfect start in their IFA Shield campaign with a whooping 4-0 victory over minnows George Telegraph. Bagan sans Barreto, Ishfaq Ahmed, Habibur rahman and N.S. Manju looked far too good for their opponents as they should have won by a higher goal margin had they taken their opportunities which included a missed spot kick early.

After the signing of Surkumar Singh, Bagan were able to deploy four of the national team players that also included Mohan Raj, Dipak Mondal and Rakesh Masih. They got off to the best possible start with Chidi Edeh being able to get a touch in scrambling the ball through into the net in the 3rd minute of play. Bagan took the game by the scruff of its neck by attacking their opponents from the word go. Bagan looked all over George like a rash from the very first minute as their attacking gameplay was mixed with short quick pass exchanges and overlapping wing play.

Karim Bencherifa, the Mohun Bagan coach seemed to have preferred a modified 4-4-2 formation with Marcos Perreira playing behind Chidi as the shadow striker and also helping him in going upfront and serving the midfield as the second target man on occasions. It was very soon after the second goal that Bagan earned a clear penalty as Chidi was pulled down by the George defender. It was a golden opportunity to go 2-0 up but Chidi missed the target by blasting the ball over the bar. James was a live wire on the right wing as often his runs would leave the George defence startled. He soon went on to score the second in the last quarter of the first half with a looping header of a cross from the left. It was only a minute before Chidi scored his second and Bagan’s third with a clever finish on an attacking run down the centre.

The second half produced just one goal towards the end with Subho Kumar scoring with a long ranger coming on as a substitute for Marcos Perreira. The George defence looked in shambles from the very beginning with the goalkeeper making mistakes and fumbling on a couple of occasions. George had its moments in the second half as they hit the crossbar once early on in the half. The midfield battle was clearly won by Bagan as they were in total control of the match. The defence would be very happy along goalkeeper Sangram Mukherjee playing the skipper for the match for keeping a clean sheet.

Mohan Raj looked a little ragged after national team duty but was still able to play a vital part alongside Dipak Mondal in keeping the cleansheet. Surkumar played brilliantly in the right flank combinig with James and providing the attacking impetus. The margin of this victory was vital for the club as a point from their game against Mahindra would be enough to see them through to the semis as due to a better goal diffrerence. Karim and the management staff would be very pleased with the performance and would look confident to go through to the semis.

M.Mohun Bagan : Sangram Mukherjee, Deepak Mondol,Surkumar Singh, N.Mohonraj,Rakesh Masih,Marcos Pereira (Subho Kumar 73'),L.James Singh, Kalia Kulothungon, Snehasish Chakrbarty, Chidi Edeh (Suraj Mondol 86'), Micky Farnandez.

Churchill Brothers booked their semi-final berth in the 114th IFA Shield as top of Group 'B ' with four points.

United Nations backs Homeless World Cup

04.09.2009 : With just three days until the kick off of the 7th Milan 2009 Homeless World Cup, the United Nations have announced their support with a message from the special adviser to the United Nations Secretary General on Sport for Development and Peace. The Milan 2009 Homeless World Cup welcomes 48 nations to the Arena Civica, Sempione Park, Milan from 6-13 September 2009.

The United Nations considers sport as a powerful tool to promote education, health, development and peace. Sport unites people of all social classes, cultures and religions in a positive and educational way.

As the Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace, Wifried Lemke said: it is with great pleasure that I offer my support to the "Milan 2009 Homeless World Cup", a football initiative which has been uniting teams of homeless people to take a once in a lifetime opportunity to represent their country and change their lives forever.

The Homeless World Cup initiative is an extraordinary example of the application of sport as a tool for community development. The Homeless World Cup has triggered the establishment of over 50 local grass roots projects working with people who are homeless and excluded from society.

The impact of the Homeless World Cup has been consistently significant with a large majority of players changing their lives for the better, by coming off drugs and alcohol, moving into jobs, education, homes, training, reuniting with families and some even going on to become players and coaches for professional or semi-professional football teams.

Considering the increase in the number of participating teams from 18 national teams in the year 2003 to 48 national teams for the current event in Milan, the Homeless World Cup is well on the way to realizing its vision - a healthy, abundant, confident world where everyone has a home, a basic human right.

The initiative has been a very successful means to raise awareness of issue surrounding the homeless and to improve the image of homeless people amongst the general public. The positive impact that this project has been able to have on individuals from more than 70 countries makes it an initiative that deserves any additional support it can obtain.

I look forward to a continued collaboration with the Homeless World Cup initiative and wish all participants the very best in this life-changing experience!"

Odafe Okolie & Co. held by Mohammedan Sporting

02.09.2009 :Ratul Chatterjee , Kolkata :Mohamedan Sporting put up a spirited performance against favourites Churchill Brothers at Mohun Bagan AC ground today to hold them to a 1-1 draw. R.Vasum scored for the last season’s National league champions while Dipendu Biswas leveled for the black and whites in within a matter of minutes with a close range header.

Both goals coming in the first half itself as effort wise, both sides matched each other. Mohammedan, in fact should have gone 2-1 up had it not been for a brilliant double reflex save from the Churchill goalkeeper. Odafe, the star striker for Churchill, was well marked by the sporting defenders although he had some shots from just outside the box which were not on target.

The second half play was dictated by Churchill brothers as Mohammedan seemed to lose the midfield battle. Eduardo, was the lone striker who played upfront as Dipendu was substituted later on. Mohammedan looked to play on the counter as Churchill dictated possession. A late free kick from the edge of the area for Churchill gave them a chance to win it but Odafe only managed to hit the wall.

Chances were hardly created as some rough tackles flew in from both sides. Odafe was booked for his rough behavior towards the referee. This leaves Mohammedan with a chance to go through provided Lajong FC are able to hold the league champions or better yet beat them as they are now on 4 points. Churchill will look to put it past the Shillong side as they will be looking to go through from their group convincingly.

In an another match of Group "D" played at Howrah Stadium AS Dounaes of Senegal made a goalless draw against Mumbai based Air India. Air India is now leading in their group with 4 points.

MATCH PREVIEW: East Bengal faces TFA in IFA Shield

02.09.2009 :Arunava Nag , Kolkata :On 3rd of September, 2009 the Kolkata giant, East Bengal Football Club is going to face the Tata Football Academy at Barasat Vidyasagar Stadium. The match will start from 3.00 PM. East Bengal who has already won the IFA Shield for 27 times will be looking to win it for the 28th time. The red and gold won their first IFA Shield in the year of 1943 after being established in the year of 1920.

The players of East Bengal had a hard pre-season camp in Puri and played a series of friendly games in Myanmar. Their coach, Subhas Bhowmik made them clearly understand the need or practice by telling that “If you fail to prepare, then prepare to fail”. After giving a rusty performance the players will be looking to prove themselves in the first match of the IFA Shield as well as the season.

On the other hand, TFA has already started their journey in the IFA Shield by taking on Chirag United on 1st of September where they had a draw by the margin of 1-1. The goal scorer was Subodh Kumar. The team consists of players who are all young, enthusiastic and should have more stamina. This can be one of the main reason of their good performance.

    KEY PLAYERS:EAST BENGAL

Alvito D' Cunha - He is skillful player with lots of experience and knows the taste of winning as he was one of the members of the East Bengal team when it won the LG ASEAN Cup in 2003. As he had a fall in his form and fitness was mostly kept among the substitutes in the previous year he will be looking to come back into his original form. He has an excellent left foot and can do anything with the ball. East Bengal will also be looking to utilize his experience.

Abhra Mondal – This young goalkeeper came in the 1st team in replacement of Subrata Paul. He has shown his capability to keep the ball out of the net in the matches at the late season. He will be looking to keep his brilliant form this season and start that from the very first match of the season.

    KEY PLAYERS - TFA

Subodh Kumar - This young enthusiastic midfielder could be the main reason in TFA's victory over East Bengal in the IFA Shield. Though the chance of victory over East Bengal seems to be unrealistic but it is possible as TFA has held on Chirag United on 1st September on a 1-1 draw. It was possible for this young midfielder as he scored a wonderful goal from free kick and the ball curved its way into the goal. Not only he scored but he also created beautiful chances by supplying the ball frequently to the forwards.

Isan Debnath – He can another main reason for the result against Chirag, as he had made some beautiful saves and even saved a penalty. The East Bengal forwards might face a problem in sending the ball past the goal keeper inside the goal.

However East Bengal is the favorite in the match against TFA.

TFA hold Chirag United in IFA shield First match

01.09.2009 : Ratul Chatterjee, Kolkata : The first match of Group A between Chirag United and TATA Football Academy got underway this late afternoon at the Mohun Bagan AC Ground in the IFA Shield, 2009 which unceremoniously ended in a tie with goal a piece from each side. The match started with the much hyped team of Chirag United being the favourites against the underdogs TFA but soon it became even-stevens for the sparse crowd watching.

Josimar, the highy anticipated striker for Chirag could’nt display even half the performance for which he was hyped. The game saw him miss a host of chances throughout the match including a penalty. The opening few minutes saw both sides trying to dominate the game possession wise but failed to convert the created chances. The game entered into a phase of cagy midfield battle as TFA looked to make it difficult for Chirag in the midfield.

Chirag playing with a 4-3-3 could’nt break the TFA defence early on as Jayanta Sen and Lalkamal in the centre failed to find Josimar, the much hyped target man for Chirag. Josimar was well taken care of by the TFA defenders and his runs towards goal proved futile in most cases. The game was played in the midfield until an opening from the midfield saw Josimar through who was brought down in the box as the referee pointed to the spot. The striker who decided to take the penalty himself was denied by a brilliant save from Ishan debnath diving towards his left as the match remained at stalemate after that till halftime. TFA did’nt create as many chances as their attack fizzled out in the midfield with Robin Singh their target man having nothing to do than just to loiter around.

The 49th minutes of second half saw TFA taking the match by the scruff of its neck.Their skipper Subodh Kumar, getting into the act as they earned a freekick near the box and the skipper slaughted the ball home brilliantly with a terrific bend (1 - 0 ) . The TFA skipper Subodh Kumar then proved to be the standout player for not only TFA but also for the second half of the match. His midfield orchestration and passing was one to watch out for. His presence of mind, sense of positioning was worth applauding as he justified the skippers role by leading from the front and tearing opponent’s defenses apart with precision passing and long balls.

Chirag however did’nt take much to equalize as a defensive lapse saw Malswama Tulunga find space to get through and slaught home an aerial ball which was misjudged by the TFA defenders ( 1 - 1 ) in 80th minutes. Chirag went on to create a host of chances but failed to convert a single one with poor finishing from the players.

Parminder Singh coming in for Lal kamal failed to create anything with Josimar missing a gifted opportunity yet again from a defensive lapse. The match ended with no player being booked but also no side proving to be better in scoring more than the opposition as Chirag failed to convert chances while TFA creating very few.Subrata Bhattacharya will have much worrying to do with his side’s finishing abilities as they will next take on East Bengal,a favorite for the competition.

CHIRAG: Sandip Nandy, Manas Das, Subhasish Roy Chowdhury, Jayanta Sen, Joshimear, Gouranga Bisawas, Malswamma Tulunga, Lalkamal Bhowmick, Safar Sardar, Du, Denson Devdas.

TFA: Isan Debnath, Raju Gaekwad,Jagdeep Singh, Jagannath Sana, Robin Singh, Jagtaar singh, Md. Mustakeen, Hardeep Singh, Gurjinder singh, Hanghal.

In the other match of the day at Khardah Stadium defending Champions Mahindra United defeat Camellia George Telegraph 2 - 0. The First half was goalless. In 2nd half Devid Booth's boys scored two goals. Both the goals were scored by Mohammed Rafi.
