Stop Spitting on the Football Pitch....

30.10.2009 : :SPITTING has become the latest casualty of the swine-flu pandemic as health experts warn of the dangers of the “disgusting habit” – especially on the sports field. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has said spitting could increase the risk of spreading the virus, Some players of two English Premier League clubs fell ill with symptoms.Tyrone GAA manager Mickey Harte said it had become “pure habit” for some players. In Singapore spitting in public is an illegal offence

So the footballers in the English Premier League have been told to stop spitting on the pitch for preventing as well as not to spread of swine flu virus among players and fans. Some Footballer of Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers have been diagnosed with А/H1N1 flu in the past few days, which was enough to put the country’s Health Protection Agency (HPA) on alert. The name of those infected have not been revealed, but the information was confirmed by both club’s managers.

The French football league sparked controversy last Sunday when it decided to postpone a match between PSG and Marseille because PSG players Ludovic Giuly and Mamadou Sakho and two members of the coaching team were diagnosed with the H1N1 virus on Saturday.

Health Protection Agency (HPA) spokesman told that Footballers or any other sportsman,Officials wouldn't spit during any indoors games similarly they shouldn't do it on the football pitch. If they are spitting near other people it could certainly increase the risk of passing on infections.

The Football Association and Barclays Premier League said they were following guidance from health experts in handling the issue and says clubs should seek advice from the "relevant statutory" authorities regarding the virus.

Another Disappointment for East Bengal in Home

29.10.2009 : Debasish Majumder:Another Disappointment for East Bengal in Home Encounter against Salgaokar East Bengal ends the day with the disappointed 1-1 draw against Salgaocar in the i-league encounter in Barasat Stadium. The result of this home match of East Bengal put them in a more critical position in the i-league table. On the other hand Salgaokar became successful to grab a point from their away encounter.

East Bengal started the match in an attacking way and Mehtab Hussein took the first shot at the Salgaokar goal in the opening minute. East Bengal kept their attacks continued in the early first half. As a result of this early dominance East Bengal scored the opening goal of the match as early as in the 12th minute with a cracking 30 yards out shot by Abel Hammond. But Salgaocar never gave up hope and very soon organized their defence and midfield to throw the challenge to the opposite side. But in rest of the first half both the team left the example of unplanned and scattered football. East Bengal Striker Hammond was declared Man of The match today.

With 1-0 up East Bengal started their second half with a sudden encounter but this time Hammond failed to increase the lead. As the match continues Salgaokar took the control of the match and tried hard to return back the goal to East Bengal. In 60th minute Mitrovic came in Subhas Singh’s place who had a very disappointed game today. During this span Salgaokar created number of chances but failed to convert even a single of them. But the blunder for East Bengal came in the injury time. The East Bengal fans just started to get prepared for their first expected win in this edition of i-league a 91 minute rebound strike of Eneke ended the hopes of the East Bengal fans as the goal brought long awaited equalizer for Salgaokar to save the day for them.

Though Abel Hammond of East Bengal was awarded with the Man of the Match award but for Salgaokar Francis Fernandez and Iranian Samania played effective game for their team. In the post match press conference East Bengal’s assistant Coach Tushar Rakshit blamed the injury problem responsible for this kind of result. But he was hopeful for the rest of the season for this team. Practically the only hope for East Bengal is now the newly appointed Coach Philip de’ Rider who has experience of coaching in East Bengal. The East Bengal fans are now just in wait of some miracle from him.

History repeats itself but the Colour Changes
Mohun Bagan gets the
Historical 5-3 win Over East Bengal

25.10.2009 :Debashis Majumder ::The day 25th October, 2009 makes its entry in the history of Indian football. Finally Mohun Bagan overcomes the curse by giving 5 goals to their archrival East Bengal. In 1975 East Bengal got a 5-0 victory against Mohun Bagan where Subhas Bhowmik played a great game behind that glorious victory and in 2009 as a Coach Subhas Bhowmik is now on the receiving end. For the Mohun Bagan fans today is the day of glory where as for the East Bengal side it came as a day of disappointment though they have given a tough challenge to the winning side and made their tusk hard enough. More than 1 lakh spectators of Yuvabharati Krirangan today experienced electrifying excitement in this breath taking i-leaue Kolkata derby.

Earlier both the team came out not with full strength, if Bhaichung Bhutia was absent in East Bengal then Mohun Bagan also came out without Deepak Mondal and N.S. Manju. From the very first minute the match kicked off with a counter-encountering mode. In the 5th minute of the match Snehashis Chakraborty of Mohun Bagan made a decent attempt but could not find the goal. Very soon East Bengal organized their midfield and got the majority hold of the game for next few minutes. During this span East Bengal found the net when Nirmal Chhetri scored a goal from a clean header resulted from a corner. The match was just 9 minute old then.

Getting 1-0 down Mohun Bagan started to play their best game to find the equalizer, which ultimately came in the 17th minute when Surkumar Singh made a fantastic run through the right wing and gave an excellent final pass to Edeh Chiddi who made no mistake to turn this opportunity into a goal. After the equalizer Mohun Bagan increased their pressure on East Bengal defence with produced another goal to Mohun Bagan to go in lead first time in the match when in 22nd minute the young star Manish Mathani took a brilliant strike to score the second goal for Mohun Bagan. More and more Bagan attacks made the East Bengal defence helpless and Bareto-Chiddi duo started to create terror in the East Bengal defence. In 32nd minute Bareto narrowly missed a chance but immediately in 33rd minute Chiddi scored the third goal for his team which came out as a result of the intelligent football between Bareto and Chiddi.

3-1 lead of Mohun Bagan just started to reflect their dominance at the game but suddenly the situation changed when due to an unforgivable error of the Bagan defence and goal keeper Shilton Paul; the experienced Yusuf Yakubu struck second time for East Bengal immediately after the third goal of Mohun Bagan. The second goal brought East Bengal back in the match and the team started to gave its best to get the equalizer. East Bengal attack then rushed one by one on Mohun Bagan defence like destructive cyclone. Ultimately the equalizer came in the 44th minute when Yakubu again scored a temporary savior from an effective free-kick taken by Renedy Singh. Both the teams went in half time with the 3-3 purely balancing scorecard.

During the lemon break Qarim Bencharifa; the Bagan coach changes his strategy by rectifying the first half mistakes. Sangram Mukherjee replaced Shilton Paul in goal who had a very disappointing first half at the beginning of the first half and this change prove worth enough at the end of the day. Sangram not only covered up the previous deficits made by Shilton but also inspired the entire team specially the defence to build a protective resistance against the East Bengal attacks.

In the front line the day belongs to Edeh Chiddi. In the very previous match in a Calcutta Football League encounter against Kalighat Chiddi made a series of misses. But every day is a different day; the day of Chiddi to stop all the criticisms that started against him. In the second minute of the second half Mohun Bagan again went to the lead with another Chiddi goal that also brought his hat trick. From a brilliant cross of Snehashis Chakraborty, Chiddi made no mistake to score the fourth goal for Mohun Bagan. East Bengal started their hard work to regain their position and especially when due to injury problem Bareto was get of East Bengal made some effective attempts. But the organized Bagan defence gave no more chance to the East Bengal forwards. But still the moment of the day is yet to come.

The goal of glory came in the 66th minute when from a corner of Marcos Pereira again Edeh Chiddi made the final and fifth strike to the East Bengal goal which also ended the curse on Mohun Bagan after long 34 years. It reflects that the history repeat itself but this time the colour of glory stands with the Maroon & Greens.

Chiddi with his brilliant football and four goals was declared as the Man of the Match beyond any doubt but in today’s game Marcos Pereira the Brazilian footballer of Mohun Bagan played a great game especially in the second half by successfully playing the pivotal role in the midfield. On the other side Yusuf Yakubu again showed his importance for the team but today the day belongs to the Mariners.

A historical day of Indian football and a great victory of Mohun Bagan also left some questions at the end of the day. Both Subhas Bhowmik and Qarim Bencharifa must think about their defence organization for rest of the season. After this victory Mohun Bagan get some breathing space with 6 points in 4 matches in the i-league table whereas with another loss East Bengal comes much closer to the bottom line.

In the post match press conference Qarim Bencharifa said that he is very pleased with the effort of the team and he is not worried with the 3 goals conceded by his team because to him it is the part of the game. He further mentioned that to him the most important thing is the winning not the 5 goals but he is happy for the fans and hopeful that his team will continue this winning strike in the upcoming games. On the other hand the situation becomes more critical for East Bengal as they still now have a very disappointing season and till now event does not secure a single victory in the i-league. East Bengal coach Subhas Bhowmik stated about this result that it is just an accident but he took the complete blame on himself and surrender to the club about the decision for future phase of his coaching in East Bengal and if the club decides so he was ready to live his duty. But besides this he is also hopeful for the better result of the team because it is only the fourth match of the league and the major path is still to come but he gave emphasis on further hard work.

EB Vs MB : Frenzy associated with the derby clash

24.10.2009 : RANA BOSE ::Kolkatans, or for that matter Bengalis have been fortunate to be gifted with a very special virtue by the British – a passion for football. A Bengali pioneered an indigenous adoption of the sport and a “native” Bengali, Nagendra Prasad Sarbadhikary first kicked the ball here in Kolkata as early as in 1877. This has led many to claim that Bengalis were the first in the world to play football outside the British Isles. Despite the rich tradition and a head-start, the game has stagnated in this country and the sport is losing much of its glamour and talent thanks to the apathy and abuse by the officials concerned.

When the game of cricket has overshadowed the game of football in this country, there still remains a deep-seated obsession and craze for the game of football. In Kolkata, which boasts of the second biggest football stadium in the world, with seating capacity of over one hundred thousand gets nearly filled up if there is a clash between the traditional rivals.

Although football, or for that matter any sport is supposed to spread goodwill and unity, a derby match divides the populace vertically between “baangals” and “ghotis”. A Baangal, would signify an individual whose ancestors had migrated from East Pakistan during partition and subsequently. The term “Ghoti” was for the individual whose forefathers were domiciled at this side of the river Padma. This ethnic divide during a football match between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan conjures the frenzy and fanaticism and perhaps does not exist in any part of the world.

Football became the yardstick for establishing the supremacy between these two sets of the Bengali community. Each community trying desperately to upstage and outdo the other on the football field. A victory for the “green and maroons”, i.e., the Mohun Bagan club will mean rejoicing and a feast of “golda chingri”. A victory for East Bengal club will entice the fans of the “red and yellow” to a “hilsa” feast.

Mohun Bagan Club, declared as the National club of India had first infused amongst the Bengalis that they were no less inferior to the British. The victory in the IFA Shield final over East York Regiment in 1911 was hailed as a moment of triumph. Surprisingly, the team that played and won against the British side had eight players including the goal scorer and the captain who could be termed as “baangal”. Even today, both teams are composed of players who hail from both sides of the Padma.

Although the partition forced the two cultures to gradually dilute through inter-cultural mixing and form a new cosmopolitan order, football kept alive the clash of the regional egos. There are umpteen instances where the husband (perhaps) a “ghoti” supporting Mohun Bagan and the wife, a “baangal” rooting for East Bengal. The topic of Mohun Bagan and East Bengal is a hot topic for discussion and a preoccupation for the Bengali society and took myriad forms of expression. The conflict permeated into customs, literature, music and cinema and acted as a check and balance to counter the rowdies from clashing to defend their respective affiliations.

Football clubs from Goa and Mumbai have become serious contenders for the National league, hegemony till a decade ago enjoyed by the big two of Kolkata. However, the fan support is not there as much as it is in Kolkata. Fans throng the stadium wearing their club colors and with banners and festoons painted in their respective club colors. Here the entire social fabric is woven around the big two and shows a general divide. The city’s rumbling trams have been given a facelift and the colors selected were those of the big two.

No wonder, FIFA President Sepp Blatter felt hugely impressed during his visit to the city a couple of years back. He sat and watched the derby match and saw Mohun Bagan edge out East Bengal in front of a packed house. His comments thereafter, about Indian football has very important connotation, “India is a sleeping giant”. Let us hope the giant quickly wakes up and is taken notice of by the world football fraternity.

16.10.2009 :Rituparna Sengupta is to star in a movie featuring Indian football star Alvito D'Cunha. Alvito will play himself in the movie. Football is a growth sport in India with the national team having recently won the Nehru Cup for the second time, beating Syria in the final and having also qualified for the 2011 Asian Cup for the first time.

Seen as a potential investment opportunity, the All India Football Federation headquarters was recently visited by Shilpa Shetty and her fiance Raj Kundra.

Alvito will appear with Rituparna in the Tollywood movie Aakashchua. "I have three scenes in the movie. Rituparna Sengupta is the lead actress and another new heroine is also part of the group," he says, "I was supposed to have my scenes this week but since the ground isn't green at this point, we shall shoot sometime in the next month."

Rituparna recently had a dream come true when she shot an ad with Shahrukh Khan during Durga Purga. "I finally shot with my screen idol," she exclaims, "On the seventh day of Durga Puja, I shot an ad with Shah Rukh. For the Sona Chandi Chawanprash commercial, we were paired together as a couple." She felt a little guilty because of the timing, however.

"For us Bengalis, shooting during the festivities is sacrilege," she explains, "I never shoot as I would rather spend time with my family. Time flies during this period as I am always shopping, eating and dressing up. But this year was an exception as it meant working with SRK."
