3-4 Upset for India against Oman in U-19 AFC Qualifier

10.11.2009 :: Debashis Majumder : India U-19 football team faced their third serial defeat in the U-19 AFC Qualifier. This time the team faced the most pathetic defeat against Oman. At the half time of the match Indian team was leading with 3-1 scoreline but at the end of the day they found themselves 3-4 behind which brings another disappointment for the U-19 India team.

From the very first minute by taking the advantage of the weak Indian defence Oman started to repeat attacks to the Indian goal and as early as in the 4th minute of the match Oman found the leading goal, scored by Al Rajaibi Basim Abdullah Taeeb. After conceding the early goal the Indian team quickly organized themselves and in rest of the first half the entire team played a dream football. In fact Lalrindika Ralte delivered an outstanding performance in the first half. Ralte scored the equalizer for India only in the 15th minute and in the 19th minute Ralte again scored another goal to put India in the lead. In 35th minute Akshay Mall increased the lead further in a cool and intelligent manner by scoring a delightful goal.

A completely different story took place in the second half. With 3-1 lead India team played all over scattered and confused game in the second half and during this span Oman to the control of the match. Especially the repeated Omanese attacks created heavy panic in the Indian defence. In the 71st minute Oman reduced the difference by an excellent goal scored by Khalil Ibrahim Abdullah Al Alawi from a brilliant free kick.

As soon as in the 75th minute Oman finally got the equalizer scored by Abdullah Saif Rashid Al Shibli. But the final heart breaker came to India in the second minute of the injury time when a very careless mistake of Indian defence allowed Yaqoob Salim Nasser Al Nadabi to score the winning goal for Oman. At the end of the day India U-19 team left the field with a heartbreaking disappointment in the U-19 AFC Qualifier. In 2007 India - Oman match ended 1-1.

I'M ENJOYING A LOT PLAYING IN KOLKATA: EDU

10.11.2009 :S.Mitra:Mohammedan Sporting won their 4th Trophy in this season . Eduardo Escober,Brazilian striker of Mohammedan S.C has a great role behind this success. We talked with Eduardo..

KFC: Hi Edu, you are in very good form this year and Mohammedan Sporting has won few tournaments this year. Are you enjoying playing here?

Eduardo: Yeah, I am enjoying a lot playing in Kolkata. This year I'm much happier than last season, so this is helping me to play well this year. Mohammedan Sporting has won few trophies this year, and I'm very happy that I have little contribution in the team's success. We still have a long way to go and I want to continue performing like this throughout the year.

KFC: What about the crowd? When you see so much crowd in the stands, does it put pressure on you or it helps you to play better?

Eduardo: I always like to play in stadium which is packed with fans. This gives me extra motivation to play better. Kolkata crowd is one of the best in India and I am very impressed. It does not put pressure on me, on the contrary it helps me to play better.

KFC: What is the difference in atmosphere of Kolkata and Punjab football?

Eduardo:The basic difference is that in Kolkata, fans come to see football and cheer a lot for their team, which is absent in Punjab where matches are played mostly in front of empty stands. The people in Kolkata are very passionate about football.

KFC: Who do you think will win Kolkata league this year?

Eduardo: I can't comment on other teams, but I think my team, Mohammedan Sporting, is strong enough to fight for title this year. We will give our best and will be a strong contender to win Kolkata League.

KFC: Did you went to see the derby match between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal? Which team did you support? How was the atmosphere? Can you compare it with Brazilian derby like Sao Paolo vs Corintheinans?

Eduardo:Yes I saw the game but I did not support any team. I was happy because I saw a great game of football. The match was very tensed one and I enjoyed watching the derby.I have good friends in both Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, so it does not matter to me who won the match.Yes, the atmosphere, tension is more or less same like the derby games in Brazil.

KFC: You have quite a few Brazilian friends in Kolkata who are playing in Chirag, Mohun Bagan and East Bengal? Who is your closest friend?

Eduardo: Yes, at present we have a big group here and we enjoy a lot and spend time with each other. In ground, we may be enemy, but outside ground we are all friends. I have two best friend here right now, Jose Barreto and Marcos Pereira, but others are also very close to my heart.

KFC: Who is your favorite footballer in India and World football?

Eduardo: One of my favorite footballer is Anwar of Dempo, I played with him for two years in JCT. Also I think Barreto is the best striker at present in India. In World football, my favorite player is Romario.

KFC: What is your favorite food?

Eduardo: Rice noodles and beef.

KFC: Which defender in India gives you most trouble?

Eduardo: Mahesh Gawli of Dempo. I played against him several times. He is one of the best stoppers of India.

KFC: Which is your favorite English Premier League team?

Eduardo: Manchester United.

KFC: Which striker you always want to play with?

Eduardo: Jose Barreto. I would love to play with him.

Churchill beat Dempo in an Exciting Goan Derby

08.11.2009 :Debashis Majumder :Super Sunday in Goa experienced an exciting I-League encounter between the two Goan giants-Dempo and Churchill Brothers where Churchill registered a close but entertaining victory over Dempo. This win earned three vital points for Churchill.

Churchill started the match in style. As early as in the 10th minute Kalu was brought down by Clifford Miranda in the box. Odafe made no mistake to convert the spot kick into goal to give his team an early lead in the match. Soon Dempo took the challenge to the other side by organizing repeated attacks to the Churchill goal in search of the equalizer.

As a result Dempo found their equalizing goal in the 22nd minute when from a decent cross of Sunil Chettri Ranty Martins headed the ball into the Churchill net. Soon after the equalizer Dempo increased their pressure and Sunil, Beto and Ranty, the trio started to create panic in the Churchill defence. Ultimately in the 30th minute by a brilliant bicycle kick Ranty put Dempo ahead in the match.

In the second half Churchill provided better organized and spirited football. Odafe, Felix and Kalu made repeated attempts to the Dempo goal. Man of the Match Ogba Kalu played an outstanding match for his team. Though Dempo also made challengeable replies to their opponents by organizing decent counter attacks but the major control of the second half was kept by Churchill Brothers.

In the 79th minute a misunderstanding of Dempo defence allowed Odafe to take a cracker to the Dempo goal and when his shot deflected by the post Felix scored the equalizer from rebound. Still the final magic of the match yet to come. But if Odafe is in the field anything can be possible. In the 86th minute Odafe scored the third goal for his team from a sudden attack. Dempo found no reply to this goal in till the final whistle and the final score remains 3-2 in favour of Churchill to provide them 3 vital points in the league table.

Lajong hold Pune F.C 1-1 in I-League

08.11.2009 :: S. GHOSH :It was a match of great expectation from either side. Pune FC already played 6 matches but no win in their baggage. Where as in this away match getting support like home match also boost up Team Lajong. Lajong FC started well, one after another attack was just testing National Team goalkepper Subrata's capability. Haokip & Tuboi delibaretly continued with their tremendous run & power shot.

Subrata got false twice, but luck was not with Lajong & they were unable to convert them into goal. There was no midfield & Forward organization in Pune team. Lajong's dual foreigners, Giblee & Daniel took the total facility of that. Pune was then a 2 man show, Subrata Pal in Goal & Venkatesh. The veteran player really took the load from defending to ball distribution, monitoring to attack, leading to switching. Where the ball was in the right side Venkatesh was there, to ensure the Pune's presence in the field. In between he took a good attempt & helped Kuttymoni for another one which was almost going to be scored.

In the second half, Pune coach make some real good moves. He went to the formation of 3-5-1-1. Introduced midfielder Tokov, pushed back striker Douhou to central midfielder, Arata the lone striker & Venkatesh as the withdrawl striker. This formation started work, as Douhou took the body advantage to restrict Lajong's foreign quota understanding & block the midfield. Tokov took the roll of Venkatesh, but this time in the left side. Pune got the result immediately as Venkatesh scored a spectacular goal from just outside the box. Lajong coach immediately introduced their 3rd foreigner Bassey to enpower attacking zone.

But Pune immediately went to 4-5-1 strategy to defend their lone goal. Subrata also started to show some acrobatic activity to give confidence the full team. But luck was not with Pune once more. Lajong got a penalty in the 92 minute, which also booked Subrata a yellow. Daniel did no mistake to convert the penalty. Match ended up with 1-1 draw putting Lajong FC at no 9 position ( 8 points in 7 matches ) & Pune FC at no 10 position ( 6 points in 7 matches ) in the 14 teams ILeague.

07.11.2009 :Debashis Majumder :Another 3 valuable points earned by East Bengal from another away encounter. East Bengal achieved their second I-League victory against Air-India in Cooperage. Though Air-India provided tough challenge to the Red & Golds but the visitors confirmed 3 points from the match by registering 1-0 victory upon the home team.

East Bengal put early pressure on Air-India defence but the home side replied soon with challenging counter attacks. Both the teams in more than one occasion came close to score but failed to convert the chances into goal. In fact East Bengal came within an inches of scoring but the header of Nirmal Chettri could not find the net. During this span East Bengal increased their pressure and finally in the 31st minute with an unmarked header Abel Hammond scored to put the visitors into the lead. Getting 1-0 down Air-India became more offensive in search of an equalizer but failed to find it in the first half.

With the kick off in second half Air-India came too close to score but Dada Nabeel missed the chance to equalize. In second half both the teams tried to restrict each other in the midfield and neither team could establish their control in the midfield. So the match went on in a scattered manner. In the later part of the second half Air-India became desperate in search of goal and put the visitors on back foot by building up continuous attacks but failed to break down the defensive wall of East Bengal. Towards the end from a low cross of Riston Hammond almost got in the position to score but his attempt went outside for just an inches. Finally the score remains 1-0 in favour of the Red & Golds.

As the chief architect of this victory Abel Hammond was declared the Man of the Match. Mohun Bagan Just Managed a Draw against Sporting Goa..

07.11.2009 :Debashis Majumder :In their away I-League encounter against Sporting Club de Goa in the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru stadium Mohun Bagan just ended up with a 2-2 draw. It is the tough luck of the home team that in spite of their complete dominance in the game the visitors became successful to clinch a point from the match. On the other side for Mohun Bagan the luck favoured them to take a point from the match.

Sporting Club de Goa started the game with desperate measure to get 3 points in home which they bitterly needed. In search of their first I-League win Sporting kept their pressure on Bagan defence from the beginning. The home side took the control of the midfield early in the first half while the away team looked completely scattered and confused. Because of the repeated Sporting attacks on Bagan goal the visitors look disorganized and panic stricken in the defence. As a result in the 23rd minute a silly defensive error of Rakesh Masih allowed Nathanial Amos to score the opening goal for Sporting Club de Goa. After conceding the goal Mohun Bagan showed some organized football to fight back in the game. Most of the Bagan attacks were building from the left flank especially by Snehashis Chakraborty.

In the 33rd minute from a decent cross of Snehashis Branco Cardozo scored the equalizer with a fantastic header. Soon within 2 minutes Mohun Bagan got a close chance to take the lead but both the repeated shots of Chiddi and Branco were brilliantly saved by the Sporting keeper Luis Bareto. Ultimately in the 42nd minute quite against of the run of play Bagan got the second goal scored by Marcos Pereira. But the Bagan defence failed to protect the lead as in the 44 minute Joseph Perera scored the intelligent equalizer.

With 2-2 scoreline Sporting gave their best in the second half to get the winning goal. They dominated almost the entire second half with their organized positioning football. In fact Man of the Match Joseph Perera created heavy panic on Bagan defence. During this span of time both Mohanraj and Shilton Paul made some crucial denial to prevent Sporting from further scoring. In fact the 66th minute fabulous save of Shilton Paul ultimately saved the day for Mohun Bagan. Towards the dying minute of the match substitute Tomba Singh made a well attempt on Sporting goal but his shot went well outside of the post. Finally the match ended with 2-2 scoreline.

With 10 points in 7 matches the boys of Karim Bencharifa comes to the 5th position of the league table but the defence of Mohun Bagan will definitely keep the Coach in pressure. Whereas another draw in home gives nothing but only brings disappointment for Sporting Club de Goa as the team remains in the bottom position of the league table with just 3 points in 6 matches.

Iraq beat India 5 - 0 in the U-19 AFC Qualifier

05.11.2009 :The first match of India in the U-19 AFC Qualifier came with utter disappointment. India suffered a 0-5 defeat in their opening match against Iraq. The U-19 India team failed to play up to the expectations and the entire match was thoroughly dominated by Iraq.

From a low cross from right wing Amjad Hussain scored the opening goal for Iraq. India conceded the second goal by a miserable mistake of the Indian goalkeeper as it converted into goal by Mustafa.

In the second half Iraq tried to increase their lead from the beginning and in 55th minute Amjad Hussain scored his second and the third goal for Iraq. The fourth goal conceded by India was a result of a brilliant free kick as Muhaimen scored it in the 77th minute of the match. India conceded the fifth and final goal in the 91st minute.

Though India got a close chance in the first half immediately after the opening goal to make an equalizer but the Indian players missed the opportunity on that vital occasion. After a very disappointing start India is now looking forward for some better result in their next match against Saudi Arabia on 7th Nov..

India: Gurpreet Singh (GK),Abhishek Das(Vishal Kumar) ,Inderpreet Singh , Deepak Devrani, Akshay Mall (Tirthonkar Sarkar), Milan Singh ,Shilton D'Silva, Lalrindika, Jeje Lalpekhulua(Capt), Manandeep (Malswamfela), Rozama.
