Confed Cup : Fight between Developed and Developing Nations

29.06.2009 ::: RANA BOSE ::All good things must come to an end and as the curtain fell on an outstanding two weeks of Confederations Cup 2009 action on Sunday, South Africa will be hoping for a repeat performance when it hosts the continent's first World Cup in 12 month's time.

Brazil's stirring comeback to snatch a 3-2 victory over the United States in the final was a fitting conclusion to a positive tournament played out before a passionate public, where 44 goals were scored in 16 matches that were played.

The competition saw the gap closing down between the “developed” and the “developing” football nations. The United States' stunning 2-0 win over the European champions Spain in the semi-finals, a feat the Americans almost surpassed when they led Brazil by the same score at halftime in the final.

However, Brazil showed just why they are Brazil, with three goals in the second half to retain the trophy and install themselves as early favourites to lift a sixth World Cup next year, a clear message was sent out to the other title contenders.

Luis Fabiano's brace and a thundering header from skipper Lucio completed Brazil's tally of 14 goals in five matches after Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan had threatened to give the U.S. a stunning victory in their first global tournament final.

Whether it was the incessant sound of the vuvuzela creating a surreal atmosphere in the stadiums or the fact that playing in South Africa took away home advantage for the "bigger" teams, most matches showcased keenly contested, open and end-to-end play.

After making a slow start to the competition, the U.S. played without fear against Spain or Brazil, indicating the World Cup could produce even more surprises next year.

SPAIN STUNNED

During the tournament, Spain registered a world-record equalling run of 35 matches without defeat and were favourites to reach the final, but their loss to the U.S. showed nothing can be taken for granted in their quest for a first World Cup triumph.

Fernando Torres' 11-minute hat-trick in their opening 5-0 defeat of New Zealand was among the competition's highlights, as was Egypt's astonishing fightback in their 4-3 loss to Brazil.

Egypt went one better in their next match and the 1-0 victory over world champions Italy was not only the first win for an African side against the Azzurri but also served as a warning to Marcello Lippi over the strength and age of his current squad.

The Italian coach will be more concerned about the aging side's inability to defend their title when they were humiliated days later by a rampant Brazil, who tore them apart with a three-goal burst in eight minutes either side of halftime.

The Italian manager needs to develop younger players before the finals, although 35-year-old skipper Fabio Cannavaro looks set to add to his record-equalling 126 caps for his country.

Although the opening match between hosts South Africa and Iraq got the tournament off to a slow start with a 0-0 draw, the hosts did enough to impress the likes of Franz Beckenbauer that if they found a decent striker they could do well in next year's WC.

Beckenbauer, who won the World Cup with West Germany as a player in 1974 and coach in 1990, said they could be among the favourites after playing well to hold Brazil for 88 minutes in the semi-final before eventually losing 1-0.

CONTROVERSIES

Off the pitch, the major controversy was trumpeted in by the vuvuzela, the horn blown incessantly by fans throughout matches in South Africa. International broadcasters outside South Africa have complained that it was interfering with commentaries and viewers moaned about its unremitting din, but the FIFA president said there were no plans to ban it next year.

The South African Football Federation conducted the entire tournament in a very professional manner, raising hopes that the next year’s World Cup competition promises a feast for the eyes of football connoisseurs.

Samba Magic Rules Again… Brazil win Confederation Cup' 09

29.06.2009 :: Debashis Majumder ::Brazil Wins Confederation Cup Through A Breathe Taking Final June 29, 2009.What can be more exiting than the final of this edition of the Confederation Cup? The great measure of football presented by both Brazil and the U.S.A. turned it into an ideal final where ultimately the Samba magic rules and Brazil comes out as the Champions.

Brazil get this championship with the 3-2 final scorecard against the U.S.A. Everyone had to hold his breathe till the final whistle of the match which declared Brazil as the righteous champions of the trophy. In the semi-final Brazil get a close 1-0 victory over the host South Africa with the help of the 86th minute goal scored by Alvez from a free-kick while in the other semi-final U.S.A. get 2-0 victory over powerful Spain which gave them enough confidence to face Brazil in the final.

Brazil started the final match in a bit casual manner and punished back immediately when in the 10th minute of the match U.S.A. scored the opening goal by a great strike from Dempsey. Immediately Brazil awakened from their casual stage and started to create frequent attacks in front of the U.S. goal. But surprising all the spectators the goal comes to the other side against the run of play when Danovan scored the second goal for the U.S.A. from a brilliant counter attacking move in the 27th minute of the match.

At this situation of the match the U.S.A. are looking the favorite. But nothing can be speculated when the other team is Brazil. The second goal of the U.S.A. changed the body language of the entire Brazilian team and the starts to organize more frequent and dangerous attacks to the U.S. goal. During this phase of the match Howard the U.S. goalkeeper who has a fantastic tournament made certain crucial saves to deny Brazil from scoring. But ultimately the dead lock of the U.S. defence has been broken at the dying moment of the first half and Luis Fabiano made the first successful strike at the U.S. goal and therefore scored the first one for Brazil in the 46th minute.

In the second half Brazil comes out as a different team with more seriousness and determination and therefore showed their class of football. Kaka turned into the central force of the team and the entire team started to operate as the perfect machinery. Dunga the Brazilian coach changed his strategy and moved forward to their natural style of game and finally the equalizer comes for Brazil in the 74th minute again scored by Fabiano which comes as the result of a combined attack.

The equalizer changed the course of the game and Brazil gone out in search of the championship goal while the U.S.A. also began their search to take the lead once again. But still the final drama is yet to come. At last the opportunity comes to Brazil when they get a corner in the 85th minute of the match. The experienced Brazilian skipper Lucio does not make any mistake to score the winning goal from a free header.

The entire scenario has changed. After lagging behind 0-2 score in the earlier period of the match Brazil dramatically finished the match as the victorious side with the final 3-2 scorecard and becomes the champion of the 2009 Confederation Cup. No doubt the U.S.A. also set a great example of fighting spirit. The Brazil team is more powerful than that of the U.S. side but still they throw tough challenge towards their mighty opponents. But at the end the day proves to be of the champions. The Samba magic rules again and Brazil as a better team becomes the champion of the Confederation Cup 2009.

Preview on the Confederation Cup 2009 final

27.06.2009 :: RANA BOSE :: USA takes on the mighty Samba boys in the final of the 2009 Confederation Cup final at the Coco Cola Park, Johannesburg on early Monday morning (12 AM IST).

This is not the USA basketball “dream team”, nor is it the Yankees’ most renowned baseball clubs. It is the USA’s soccer team, and believe it or not, they have made it all the way to the final of the Confederation Cup in South Africa, a year before the real deal gets under way.

Bob Bradley’s team have made it plain and simple for all to see that “soccer” is no more a marginalized sport in the USA. After brutally putting an end to the Spanish armada’s undefeated 35-game streak, they will next tackle the next big thing in Brazil and go down as serious players in the 2010 World Cup.

It took Dunga a while to make way for Daniel Alves in the final minutes of the semi-final bout against South Africa. From the edge of the box, the Barcelona midfielder blasted a screamer of a free-kick to send the South Americans to ecstasy, and the hosts out. Now Dunga’s boys have a chance to fly past France and stand in pole position as the team with the most number of Confederation Cup wins to their name. With such an impressive lineup, everything is possible.

Brazil is 14-1 in head-to-head meetings with the United States, and has outscored the United States 26-5.The lone American victory was a 1-0 upset at the 1998 CONCACAF Gold Cup. See the below.

    In 2009 Confederation Cup

    Brazil 4 – 3 Egypt (group match)

    USA 0 – 3 Brazil (group match)

    Italy 0 – 3 Brazil (group match)

    Brazil 1 – 0 South Africa (SF)

    Egypt 0 – 3 USA (group match)

    USA 0 – 3 Brazil (group match)

    Spain 0 – 2 USA (SF)

    Players to watch

USA : Tim Howard (GK, USA) – The ex Man U goalkeeper is a tough nut to crack as he is in excellent form, considering the exemplary display against Cassilas & Co., he may prove to be a handful for Robinho & Kaka.

Brazil : A galaxy of stars, notably, Kaka, Robinho and Fabiano besides the wonder boy Alves could spell doom for the Yankees. Match Prediction

It will not be the expected Spain against Brazil, but still should be a thriller that everyone expects. The Americans shocked the world by sinking the Spanish fleet, while Brazil needed a last minute individual effort to sneak into the final. Yet the men from the south may prove to be too much for the current CONCACAF winners and a 3-1 score-line in favour of the five times World champions is the most likely outcome.

Brazil is clearly favorite against USA, but Brazilian players have no scope to show complacency against USA in the tournament. It is pretty much understandable that USA players would try their best to achieve their biggest ever success in football and they are now determined not to let the change go away.

Brazil is traditionally a football powerhouse who has record 5 world cup titles and this is very important to note that they are the most successful team in Confederations Cup history with 2 titles alongside France.

USA has established themselves as a giant killer whom all other football playing nations would like to avoid. Even though they do not have any major success outside their continent, they occasionally defeat other football forces in international friendly matches. Despite having a balanced squad, it would not be easy for USA to cause another upset in the tournament final.

Probable Line up for Brazil : Julio Cesar, Alves, Lucio, Luisao, Kleber, Gilberto Silva, Felipe Melo, Elano, Kaka, Robinho, Luis Fabiano.

Probable Line up for USA : Howard, Spector, Onyewu, Demerit, Bornstein, Torres, Feilhaber, Bradley, Dempsey, Altidore, Donovan.
