Manchester United beat Arsenal .

30.04.2009 : RANA BOSE :It was a deserved victory for the defending champions and leaves Arsenal with the task of devising a big improvement in the second leg next Tuesday when they must try to defeat United by two clear goals.

Both Man U and Arsenal are renowned for their fine attacking football but it was United who took the honours here. The defending champions sprung out of the blocks immediately at the start and inside the second minute Wayne Rooney's looping header put Manuel Almunia, the Arsenal keeper at full stretch to make the save. Semi-finals usually are a cautious affairs but United deviated from the script, their early high tempo typified by Carlos Tévez, racing around like a man with a point to prove on his first European start since December.

The hosts' urgent start earned them the reward at the 17th minute of the first half. Moments earlier Almunia had denied Tévez at close range with a superb one-handed save when the Argentinian appeared certain to convert an O'Shea's low centre. But the goalkeeper's good work went to waste from Anderson's ensuing corner. Although partially cleared, Michael Carrick drove the ball back in and it deflected off United old boy Mikaël Silvestre to O'Shea who crashed a first-time effort past Almunia. Evidence that things were not going Arsenal's way came soon after when Cesc Fàbregas sliced a shot out for a throw-in.

Arsenal got the best attempt of the half after 27 minutes when Theo Walcott and Emmanuel Adebayor combined to set up a shooting chance on the edge of the box, but Fàbregas fired straight at Edwin van der Sar. Urged on by the noisy home crowd, United could have had a second before the half-hour mark after they launched another attack down the right, Tévez outrunning Arsenal's 19-year-old left-back Kieran Gibbs before crossing to the far post where Cristiano Ronaldo was unable to direct his header past Almunia. Anderson – lively in an attacking midfield role – then slipped a ball forward for Tévez but Almunia saved bravely from his feet.

Although Adebayor flashed a volley over the crossbar, United continued to look the likelier team to score again in the second half. Rooney fed Anderson on the edge of the box but the Brazilian miscued. Ronaldo revived memories of his long-range winner at FC Porto by leaving Almunia's crossbar trembling with a piledriveer from 25 metres before Carrick sent a grounder just wide. Red shirts kept coming forward and it took a fine Silvestre header to stop Dimitar Berbatov from scoring of a Ryan Giggs's cross. Giggs, making his 800th United appearance, then rounded Almunia and had the ball in the net but was ruled offside. At the other end Arsenal's own substitute Nicklas Bendtner beat Van der Sar to a high free-kick but the ball bounced wide. Arsenal will need to do hugely better next week if they are to overcome United at home.

(ARS): Almunia, Sagna, Toure, Silvestre, Gibbs, Diaby, Fabregas, Song, Walcott, Nasri and Adebayor.
(MAN): Van der Sar, O'Shea, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Fletcher, Carrick, Anderson, Ronaldo, Tevez and Rooney

Barcelona - Chelsea Match ended goalless

29.04.2009 :: Rana Bose : Chelsea return to London, a much happier side following a goalless draw in their semi-final match against FC Barcelona at Camp Nou in the UEFA Champions league. The Catalans were the dominant team but lacked precision up front to break the deadlock in their favour.

Barcelona dominated in the first half but found it difficult getting close to Chelsea's goal. The best chance came early on when Rafael Marquez failed to convert a cross from the right wing at the far post.

The home side suffered a severe blow seven minutes after the lemon break, when Rafael Marquez the most mobile of the lot injured his knee when running with the ball. The Mexican was replaced with Carlos Puyol. Daniel Alves also appeared to have injured himself badly a few minutes later but the right-back quickly recovered and continued for the rest of the match.

Knowing that a goalless draw would not be a particularly good result for the home side, Barcelona began to apply more pressure in the closing minutes of the second half. The Spanish side had a great chance to break the deadlock on 70th minute when Samuel Eto'o had only the keeper left to beat, but Petr Cech, the Chelsea keeper remained focused and blocked the effort.

Chelsea lacked initiative as the Londoners only seemed to want to defend, waiting for the second leg to finish the job. Guus Hiddink's men rarely got close to Barcelona's goal and Victor Valdes had little to do throughout most of the match.

Bojan Krkic had a big chance to score a late winner in added time but the youngster headed over the crossbar from a Daniel Alves cross.. Lionel Messi looked very ordinary right throughout.

The referee had to flash yellow cards at two players from each side (Toure’ Yaya, Carlos Puyol from Barca and Alex and Ballack of Chelsea.

The return leg will be played in London on Wednesday, May 6th and Barca will have amountain to climb at Stamford Bridge.

Simon Lynes, organiser of the Longest soccer game, said:" This was an absolutely incredible effort from all the lads. We were exhaused and there were some though times in the early hours of the morning but once we got past the 24 hours mark we knew we were going to make it. I'm so proud of each and every one of the players who put in an unbelievable effort both before and during the Longest soccer game."

The previous world record for the longest soccer game was set by Joeys Soccer Club with a 32 hours long game.

The Longest soccer game kicked off at 10am on April 11th, finishing 36 gruelling hours later at 10pm on April 12th at Filton College in Bristol. Players went without sleep, battled on in sub-zero temperatures and each ran an average of 70 kilometres over the duration of the match.

A Storm is Brewing : Barcelona VS Chelsea

27.04.2009 :: Saurav Sureka :In one of the most anticipated matchups of the year, Chelsea and Barcelona renew their rivalry yet again, this time in the semi-final stage of club football’s greatest competition. This matchup pits two of the hottest and most different football teams on the planet at this moment. Over the years, not only has this rivalry proved to be epic in terms of the football played, but also in terms of war of the words. Barca are considered the favorites for this years competition with Chelsea being considered the favourites to upset them. However in footballing terms, these two teams could’nt be any more different.

Barcelona possess enough skill, speed and dexterity to make them the most entertaining side in the world. Their forward line has this rare ability of scoring goals at will. Chelsea on the other hand seems to be custom made to break down this Barcelona team. This Chelsea side possesses strength, endurance and aerial ability i.e. they have all the qualities that this Barca side don’t. This matchup can also be termed as the battle between England’s best defence and Spain’s best attack.

Barcelona go into this game knowing that this is probably their first real test in this year’s competition having brushed aside Lyon and Bayern Munich with ease in earlier rounds. Pep Guardiola, knowing that his forward line is probably the best in the world would want his men to guard against complacency and overconfidence especially against a Chelsea side which has looked hungrier than ever. With a nearly full strength squad at his disposal, Guardiola would be looking for a comprehensive victory at Camp Nou. With 8 goals in the tournament already, Lionel Messi will be arguably the Barca’s most key man, also given the fact that Chelsea would also be missing a proper left back. However the only drawback for this great side would be the fact that they will have to keep one eye on next weekend El Clasico tie against arch rivals Real Madrid.

Chelsea go into this game knowing that their league ambitions are all but over, and that the Champions League along with the FA Cup remain their best bet for a trophy this season. This rejuvenated Chelsea side goes into this game as the underdogs, a tag that has done wonders for them in the preceding couple of ties. However Hiddink will not have a full strength side at his disposal unlike Guardiola. Portuguese internationals Ricardo Carvalho, Deco and Ricardo Quaresma will be unavailable for the game with the former being injured and the two other two ex-Barca players being denied an opportunity to return the Nou Camp with Deco being injured and Quaresma being cup-tied. However, Hiddink’s biggest concern would be the absence of left back Ashley Cole due to suspension. Chelsea’s main man will be the Ivorian Didier Drogba who has amazingly scored in five consecutive Champions League games and had also single handedly bullied the Juve and Liverpool defences.

Chelsea and Barca have squared off against each other 8 times in the past 10 years with victories being 3 a piece to each team. Another eye catching feature of Chelsea-Barca games have been the amount of goals scored with 29 goals being scored in 8 games. Chelsea and Barcelona will also be remembered for being involved in the most controversial and unforgettable two legs in 2004-2005 when the then Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho sparked off a monstrous controversy. The bad blood from that time exists till date and one can surely expect some feisty, no holds barred, all out action on the football pitch. All in all, these two teams share a rivalry that even words fall short of describing.

Indian Billionaire GMR Group could bid for Liverpool F.C

26.04.2009 :Liverpool are reported to have held talks with Indian billionaire Grandhi Mallikarjuna Rao over a potential £500m takeover at Anfield.Representatives of Rao's GMR Group were guests at the Merseyside club earlier this week and witnessed the 4-4 draw with Arsenal.

Rao, who has a fortuned estimated at over £4bn and owns Indian Premier League Twenty20 cricket team Delhi Daredevils, is understood to be a Liverpool fan and is reportedly keen to invest in other sports, particularly English football.

The News of the World report that Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks opened negotiations with Rao initially with a view to arranging a sponsorship deal, but the Indian businessman who made his fortune in the airport and construction industries is thought to be considering a major investment in the club which could lead to an eventual takeover.

A source told the News of the World: "The GMR group were invited by Hicks and their representative watched the Arsenal match in the directors' box with Hicks' son Tommy. It was quite clear the representative was a fan".

Hicks and his co-owner George Gillett could be forced to sell Liverpool in July unless they can refinance £350m of loans the duo took out in order to takeover the club.

The two US sports investors have endured a fractious relationship since joining forces at Liverpool, arguing over the governance and direction of the club, but recently have presented a united front as they strive to attract new finance.

Both Hicks and Gillett were present at Anfield for the Arsenal match and met with Rao's representative.

Liverpool are also understood to have held talks with a Kuwaiti investment group, led by Naffer Al Kharafi.

Liverpool went top of the Premier League on Saturday after beating Hull City 3-1, but their lead over title rivals Manchester United was short-lived as the Red Devils reclaimed the lead a few hours later with a stunning 5-2 comeback win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Mohun Bagan beat I-League Winner in Super Cup

26.04.2009 : S.Mitra:: Federation Cup winners Mohun Bagan today beat I league Champions Churchill Brothers 2-1 to lift Super Cup 2009. After today's win, Mohun Bagan ended a successful season, being Kolkata league winners, Federaration cup champion and winning the Super Cup title whereas they finished runners in I league.

The match was a fast paced one with both teams missing chances. Mohun Bagan defence played really well to bottle up Odafa. The first chance of the match came to Bhaichung in the 8th minute when he got a loose ball inside box due to a lapse by Churchill defense, but his hurriedly-taken shot went out.

In 12th minute, Odafa brilliantly dribbled past three players but Ishfaq was equally good to his task when he snatched the ball from Odafa in front of his own penalty box. In 16th minute, Ishfaq was again in the thick of action when he took the ball from Kalu in midfield and gave a forward pass to Baichung who pushed the ball towards Barreto, who in turn took a shot from outside box that narrowly missed target. In 20th minute, James, who had a brilliant match today, crossed the ball from right flank that went straight to Bhaichung, who leaped and headed the ball in first post, the ball went out, the second post was left open by goalkeeper.

In the next minute, Mohun Bagan scored the goal. Marcos took a short corner with James and the latter floated the ball inside box that Kalu tried to clear by heading the ball but the ball ballooned up and went to Manju who took a header that took a parabolic motion and went straight inside goal, Arindam had absolutely no chance to save the ball and Mariners went 1-0 up. After the goal, Churchill looked to pile pressure on the Fed Cup Champions and got few chances in the next 5 minutes but the defenders of Mohun Bagan brilliantly intercepted the ball each time.

In 22nd minute, Habibur made a very good clearance to avert danger, Felix was in open. In the next minute, Vashum gave a long ball for Odafa who tried to enter Mohun Bagan box by getting past Dipak and Manju but the latter cleared the ball for corner by timely heading the ball. In the next minute again, Odafe gave a through pass to Vashum who had only Shilton in front of him, but Mohanraj covered him up nicely and cleared the ball for corner.

In 28th minute, James crossed the ball that was going towards Baichung who was standing unmarked but Gourmangi made a very good clearance by heading the ball for corner. In 37th minute, Mohun Bagan again got a chance when Barreto gave a through pass to James who again delivered a very good ball for Bhaichung but unfortunately his well-taken shot narrowly missed target. Just before half time, Mohun Bagan conceded the goal when Vashum entered the box, dribbled past Mohanraj and took a shot that beat Shilton and went inside goal deflecting off Dipak's leg. Dipak who otherwise had a very good game perhaps was a bit slow this time.

After lemon break, Churchill dominated the proceedings for about 15 minutes. In 50th minute, Shilton saved a certain goal when he did not allow Felix to take a shot at the goal. In 54th minute, this time it was Habibur whose acrobatic header saved the day for Mariners. In 56th minute, Rakesh got a ball from Marcos in midfield and took a long ranger shot from about 30 yards out that just missed the target by a whisker. In 62nd minute, Mohun Bagan was clearly denied a penalty when Barreto brilliantly dribbled past 2 players and when he was about to unleash a left footed shot he was clearly pulled down by Raju, but referee Suresh overlooked the incident.

In 74th minute, Bhaichung ran a few paces with the ball and released a through pass but Barreto's shot went out of target. Barreto, however, scored the winning goal in 89th minute. Mohanraj made a brilliant cross from midfield that went to Barreto who leaped well to head the ball that went into far corner of the net making it 2-1 in favor of Mohun Bagan. While scoring the goal, Barreto injured himself and was taken to nursing home via ambulance. However, the report that we got is that he is okay now but he had bleeding from his mouth and it is suspected that he might have fractured his teeth.
