GEORGE TELEGRAPH SPORTS CLUB - KOLKATA

03.03.2013: ADHIRAJ DUTTA : The George Telegraph Sports Club, also famously known as the Giant Killers of Bengal football for their consistent performances against the big clubs, are set to make their Second Division I-League appearance for the second time after they participated in the 2009 edition.

Last I-League Appearance : The only time George Telegraph participated in I-League 2ND Division was in 2009 after a stellar fourth place finish in the IFA KOLKATA Premier League. They were among the top contenders to go through to the first division that year but then, a tragic incident occurred. The team collected 4 points out of 4 matches was not sufficient to reach in the Super six. That year ONGC and SHILLONG LAJONG FC WENT TO SUPER-SIX.

On the night after their first match against Shillong Lajong played at Assam, which they lost 1-2, their captain Alex Kateete passed away after a major cardiac arrest . This left the entire team demoralized and they could not really recover, thus bowing out of their group stages finishing fourth in a group of 5 teams.

After 2 years of financial turmoil, the club was again back in its glory days finishing fifth in last year's IFA KOLKATA Premier League, losing only one match throughout the season, that also against the eventual champions, the mighty Kingfisher East Bengal. The team's table was (Match 10, Win 3, Draw 6, Lost 1, GF 13 GA 10 GD +3 PONTS 15).

This season's performance : This year though, their performance have been quite under par. They were thrashed 0-4 by Kalighat MS in the first match of the season and were without a win for the first five matches of the preliminary stages.

They went on an unbeaten run of 7 games after that but unfortunately they could not make a massive comeback after their sluggish start, losing out on a Super Nine berth by only two points. Thereafter, George finished fourth among nine teams in the Relegation Stage, thus finishing a lowly 13th in the 2012-13 IFA KOLKATA Premier League.

The main problem was their lack of quality upfront. The foreign players were not up to the mark. But they have now signed new foreigners in Michael Ochei, Stephen Njoh and Godwin Orieke Mba.

Star Player : All eyes will be on Michael Ochei who makes a comeback to George after a brief stint with Aryan Club. Michael was George's top scorer last season, scoring 11 goals in 16 matches and was one of the main reasons why they lost only 1 match throughout the season.

Expectations from the team this year : George Telegraph is the only Calcuttan club in Group A to be played in Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh. They are pitted against Delhi United, DSK Shivajians, KGF Academy, Samaleshwari Sporting, Kenkre FC, Rangdajied United, Kohima Komets and Langsning FC.

Group A is a really well balanced group and all teams have equal chances of progressing to the final stages. So it's tough to say how George will perform, following their disappointing campaign in the local league.

But with quality recruitments upfront as well in the defense, Kolkata Football is optimistic that they will do well. Moreover there are many players in the squad like Stephen Njoh, Godwin Orieke Mba, Siladitya Seth who are capable of playing in multiple positions equally well which may turn out to be the team's plus point as squad rotation will be really important, given the hectic schedule of the preliminary stages.

PREVIEW : Mohammedan Sporting look to seal qualification against Bhawanipore FC

24.04.2013 : Mohammedan Sporting Coach Sanjoy Sen desperately wants to exorcise the ghosts of last season by sealing the issue in the penultimate match itself when they meet local rivals Bhawanipore FC in the final round tie of the 2nd Division League here at the Football Stadium in Bangalore on Thursday. (April 25, 2013).

Mohammedan Sporting, then coached by Aloke Mukherjee, could not get the better of United Sikkim last year in a game where the former needed to win, while a draw was enough for the latter to qualify for the I-League. The match ended 1-1.

This time round, Mohammedan Sporting - 17 points from 8 matches - need just one point from any of their last two engagements to qualify for the I-League 2013-14 season. But Coach Sen is wary of the heartbreaking encore.

"Last year, we all know what happened. Mohammedan Sporting failed to beat United Sikkim right at the end. The match ended 1-1 and the Sikkim qualified as they needed a point. So in football nothing can be guaranteed. We don't want to leave anything till the end. The lesson is learnt," Sen said.

Sen added that their opponents are a more balanced outfit and have the experienced duo of Jose Ramires Barreto and Hudson Lima Silva to boost their arsenal. "They are a more balanced side than us. Their midfield is very good. They will also go for the kill for obvious reasons. It will be a good contest. The likes of Barreto and Lima add to the threat. Everyone knows what they are capable of.

"But man marking is not my style. I prefer zonal marking. So there is no special plan as such to stop the duo. But of course we will pay them due respect and track their moves," Sen informed.Bhawanipore are just behind the leaders Mohammedan Sporting, having 13 points from 8 matches. The sides could not be separated in the first round of the final phase.

Bhawanipore will now have to win their match against Mumbai Tigers and hope that Mohammedan beat Rangdajied. A draw for the Meghalaya side will mean that the side who finishes with superior goal difference goes through, as the two cannot be separated on head-to-head count.

Coming to the match, action was mostly concentrated in the middle of the pitch as the match wore on. The opening exchanges though was end to end stuff.

Bhawanipore's Hudson Lima Silva was everywhere in the initial exchanges. The Brazilian made early inroads inside the rival box, and one such jinking run earned Bhawanipore the first corner of the match. It was Lima who took the flag kick, his effort swerving in to kiss the horizontal on its way out for a goal kick.

Sporting had their moments too early on. Only in the 5th minute, Younes Baltham's suave backheel set Jerry Zirsingha in the clear, but Debjit Mazumder pulled off a brilliant save to keep Jerry's effort at bay. Majumder and Younes was in the thick of action again minutes later, with the custodian getting the better of the striker once again with an acrobatic diving save.

A riveting contest from the first whistle, both the Kolkata outfits started creating more and more chances as the half wore on. But profligacy cost both dear. Younes and Alfred Jaryan missed couple of gilt-edged opportunities. For Bhawanipore Lima and Jose Ramires Barreto spurned a few.

The midfield battle intensified too. The purpose was evident. While a draw was enough for Sporting to confirm their berth for next season's I-League, Bhawanipore needed to win to stay in the hunt after Rangdajied United registered a win on Wednesday.

Post the breather, the tempo seemed to die down a little. Goalmouth action dried up and the battle shifted to the middle of the pitch. Of the few noteworthy, local lad J.Prasad and Alfred of Mohammedan Sporting came close to breaking the deadlock in the dying minutes.

Both the coaches introduced fresh legs in order to change the complexion of the game. But that was not to be. The match ended goalless.

INTERVIEW

We beat all the odds to qualify : Sanjoy Sen

26.04.2013: AIFF MEDIA RELEASE : Putting to rest all doubts Sanjoy Sen turned out to be Mohammedan Sporting's savior. Though he claims he "didn't have any magic wand," Sen did wave one for sure as the historic Club which lost just one match in the 17 matches under his Coaching, qualified for I-League 2013-14; that too with a match to spare. Deservingly euphoric, Sen spoke to www.the-aiff.com at length, chronicling the remarkable sojourn. EXCERPTS:

What are your plans for the I-League?

Isn't it too early to comment on that? We still have one more game left. I will be preparing a list of players whom I want to retain and want for next season. The I-League will be a different battle altogether. But we will be ready for it.

What goes through your mind after Mohammedan Sporting are back to the Elite League?

The boys have made me proud. We have finally achieved our aim and will now play in the I-League 2013-14. This feeling is superb. That we sealed the berth with a match in hand (against Rangdajied United on Saturday) speaks volumes about our consistency. I reiterate the credit goes to the players. I feel special today because of their effort. They deserve the limelight more than me.

What different do you do to turn the tide for Mohammedan Sporting?

A coach is as good as his bunch of players. When I took over on February 28 this year, the morale of the team was very low. Mohammedan Sporting had lost badly to East Bengal and Mohun Bagan in the Calcutta Football League. I had two days time to prepare them for the 2nd Division League. We trained in Kolkata for the two days and then left for Indore.

It was a big challenge for me to lift the morale of the boys. I did my bit, pep talk or whatever you call it. I told them about the history of the club, what qualification to the Premier Division means to the club. I urged them to pick themselves up as this is a new ball game altogether.

How would you sum the journey?

It was an uphill task. After coming to Indore, Ashim (Biswas) picked up a bad injury after playing just two matches. He was thus ruled out. We were a mediocre team who peaked at the right time. The players rose to the occasion. They were honest, and followed my instructions diligently. That we don't have stars minimised the chances of having any ego clashes in the team. Expectations were less and the team took it upon themselves. We beat all the odds to qualify.

What is the secret behind the success?

Team chemistry, dedication and honesty! We were so organised. We have conceded just three goals so far (with a match still left). Our defence held firm against the likes of Hudson Lima Silva and (Jose Ramires) Barreto. The two Shillong sides (Randajied United and Langsning FC) are also very good. They have impressed me a lot. Never did we concede cheaply. We lost only one match throughout the campaign. Coming to the midfield and attack, goals win you matches and we capitalised on our opportunities.

Were you under pressure under any point of time?

Mohammedan Sporting is a big brand, a historic club. The emotions always run high as there is a vast legion of fans who support the Club. So the pressure was always there. But as I said, team work, honesty and sticking to the basics have seen us through.

I didn't have a magic wand. The first win in Indore against Royal Wahingdoh turned the tide for us. We never looked back from there.
