FLASHBACK  2006    -    NATIONAL

Like every other single year, 2006 had also been one full of incidents, at least, with respect to events of national and international football. It also bore an extra significance as FIFA World Cup, the four-yearly mega-event of world football, was held in this year. 

Besides, it also witnessed many ups and downs,achievements and bereavements related to this most popular game of the world. Before we stride further towards coming incidents in the fresh year, let's have a glimpse of what we have left behind us in the previous year regarding national and international football:                                                              

                                                

January:-

The first-ever football film Festival of India took place at Malappuram in Kerala. 17 feature films were shown in this. The films featuring Pelé, Maradona and Beckham were the biggest hits among the audience.

March

Mohun Bagan employed Bishwajit Bhattacharya as their new coach in place of Jahar Das.

Syed Nayeemuddin and P K Banerjee were suspended by the All India football Federation in the quest for foreign coaches.

April

Mohammedan Sporting Club employed Subhash Bhowmick as their new coach.

May

Mahindra United won the National Football League.

Tata Football Academy and Churchill Brothers were promoted to the Elite Division of the NFL.

East Bengal were the runners-up of the NFL.

Franca Pax became involved in a dispute with AI FF, and withdrew their team from the league after having played nine matches in it.

Robert Houghton was hired as the new coach of India.

East Bengal won the Super Cup by defeating Mahindra United by two goals to one.

Jose Ramirez Barreto and Baichung Bhutia joined Mohun Bagan. Mike Okoro,Noel Wilson and Douglas signed for Mohammedan Sporting.

June:

East Bengal coach Philip deRidder from Belgium joined United Sporting of Kolkata.

July

Brazilian Carlos Perreira Da Silva became the new coach for East Bengal.

Former Indian captain and best footballer of the year Satyen committed suicide at the age of  40 years only.

August

The IFA secretary, Mr Subrata Dutta was heckled by Mohammedan Sporting supporters.

Syed Rahim Nabi and Mohammed Mukhtar were fined by the IFA for they had allegedly broken the law regarding signature of agreement.

Baichung Bhutia set up an association named "The Football Players' Association of India" involving former and present footballers.

M Suresh was compelled by the IFA to pay a fine for disregarding the law regarding signature of agreement.

September

Mohammedan Sporting suspended their Brazilian footballer, Douglas Da Silva.

October

Baichung Bhutia was fined as well as suspended by the IFA.

Punjab won the Santosh Trophy for the 7th time by beating twenty-nine times Champion Bengal.

November

East Bengal became champions of the Premier Division League in Kolkata.

Biswajit Bhattacharya resigned from his post as coach of Mohun Bagan. He accused himself of being responsible for the defeat of his team by Dempo SC in Durand Cup semi-final.

Dempo won the Durand cup by defeating JCT in the final.

December

Tulunga, after having paid a fine, was permitted by the IFA to play for East Bengal.

Eastern Railway and Port Trust were fined Rs. 22000 each by the IFA for alleged match-fixing by them.

Sujit Dey was warned and two of the goals scored by him were cancelled.

Dipendu Biswas was thus chosen as the highest goalscorer.

IFA signed a contract with the Bundesliga of Germany.

Mahindra United defeated Mohun Bagan 1-0 and thus became the 112th IFA Shield Champion.

Sukumar Singh of Mahindra United was chosen as the best footballer of India.

Mohun Bagan won the 28th Federation cup by beating Sporting Clube de Goa in the final. It was the 15th time that Mohun Bagan were in the final of  the Federation cup and the 12th time that they finished as champions. That was a unique achievement for any football club in India and a record that probably may not be surpassed by any club in the coming 20 years.

FLASHBACK 2006 (INTERNATIONAL)

 

January: Brazilian club Athletico Paranense employed Lothar Samayug as their coach. Samayug was the skipper of the World-Cup-winning German team in1990. He became the first ever German coach in any Brazilian club by joining Athletico Paranense. 

February: Egypt defeated Ivory Coast in the final of the African Nations’ Cup through tie-breaker. This was the 5th time that they won this cup. On the other hand, Nigeria beat Senegal by 1-0 to win the 3rd position in the tournament.  

Samuel Eto'o, the striker from Cameroon , received, for the third consecutive time, nomination for the Best-Footballer-of-the-Year of Africa . 

Japan beat India by 6-0 in the first match of the Asian Cup in Yokohama

Uzbekistan beat Bangladesh by 5-0.  

April: Espanyol won the King’s Cup in Spain by beating Real Zaragoza by 4-1.  

Tajikistan won the AFC Challenge Cup by defeating Sri Lanka . 

FIFA doubled the amount of remuneration to be paid to the referees going to officiate in the 2006 World Cup Soccer than the previous occasion. Instead of $20000 each, the referees were to receive $40000 each this time. 

Tele Santana, the coach of the Brazilian World Cup teams in 1982 and 1986, passed away on 21st April at the age of 74 years. 

Bayern Munich beat Eintracht Frankfurt by 1-0 in the final of the German Cup, thus winning the tournament for the third consecutive time, which was a record by itself. 

Paris Saint German beat Marseille by 2-1 to win the French Cup.  

May: Barcelona FC became the league champion of Spain for the second consecutive time. 

Thierry Henry, the skipper of the Arsenal FC, was chosen the Best-Footballer-of-the-Year of England . 

Sevilla of Spain beat Middleborough of England by 4-0 in the UEFA cup final to win the title. Although Juventus became the league champion of Italy , they were relegated to Serie ‘B’ due to the bribery scandal. 

Inter Milan were declared as the league champions by the Italian Football Association. Inter Milan won both the league and the cup and were declared as the ‘Doubles’.  

German captain Michael Ballack left Munich to play for Chelsea from the next season. Arsenal FC were beaten by Barcelona FC of Spain by 2-1 goals in the final of the Champions’ Cup. Barcelona became the champions of the tournament.  

June: Franz Beckenbauer(60), the football prince, got married to his girl-friend Hydron(39) for the third time. 

Netherlands beat Ukraine by 3-0 to become the U-21 champions in Europe . 

Brazil ’s International won the Copa Libertodoras to become the best team of the South America .  

Carlos Tevez was chosen as the Best-footballer-of-the-Year of South America . He was the only Argentinean player to receive this honour for three consecutive times. 

Brazil beat Argentina by 1-0 in the final of U-20 Womens’ Football Championship.  

Ronaldo of Brazil, by scoring a brace against Japan in a game of the World Cup 2006, leveled the record, previously set up by Guard Muller of Germany in the 1974 World Cup, of scoring a total of 14 goals in the World Cup tournaments. Later, he set up his own world record of scoring 15 goals in the World Cup tournaments by scoring a goal against Ghana . 

July: Hot favourites Brazil had to say goodbye to the World Cup 2006 as they underwent an unexpected loss against France in their quarter-final match. 

Italy and France entered the final of the World Cup after beating Germany and Portugal respectively in the semi-finals. 

Germany won the battle for the third place in the World Cup against Portugal . Miroslav Klose became the highest goal-scorer in the World Cup. He had scored 5 goals for Germany . 

Italy became the World Champions by having the triumph over France in the World Cup Final. Jean Lougi Buffon, the goal-keeper of Italy was chosen as the best goal-keeper of the World Cup 2006. 

Zidane butted Matarazzi of Italy during the final match of the World Cup and was shown the red card to be sent off from the ground. 

Klinsman resigned from his post as the coach of Germany . 

Roberto Donadoni, the former midfielder of Italy , took charge as the new coach of Italy . 

Scolari was retained as the coach of Portugal , which had won the 4th place in the World Cup. 

Fabio Cannavaro, the skipper of the World-Cup-winning team of Italy , joined Real Madrid of Spain. 

Dunga became the new coach of Brazil , replacing Carlos Pereira. 

Basille was hired as the new coach of Argentina . 

The U-20 National Team of India beat their counterparts of China by 2-1 goals to achieve the third place in the Vancouver Cup. 

August: Tata Football Academy beat the Hereford team of England by 2-0 at Wales to win the SLI Tournament trophy. 

 Miroslav Klose of Werder Bremen in Germany was chosen as the Best-Footballer-of-the-Year as well as the highest scorer of Germany . 

Barcelona FC won the Super Cup of Spain quite easily by beating Espanyol by 4-0. India was beaten by Sri Lanka in the semi-final of the SAF Games through tie-breaker. 

Sevilla of Spain beat Barcelona FC by 3-0 to win the Super Cup of Europe. 

Pereira, the coach of Brazil , joined as the new coach of South Africa . 

September: India was routed 7-1 by Saudi Arabia in the Asian Cup. 

North Korea became the champions of the Youth Cup of Asia by beating Japan in the final through tie-breaker. 

Legendary footballer Puscas passed away at the age of 79 years. 

Faketti, under whose captaincy Italy had become the European Champions in 1968 and the runners-up of World Cup 1970, died of cancer at the age of 64 years. 

December: India beat Maldives and drew against Hong-Kong in the Asian Games. But, after having lost the match against Iran , they could secure only the 3rd place in the Group ‘D’ and went out of the tournament.  

Qatar beat Iraq by 1-0 in the final of the Asian Games in Doha and became the champions. 

Iran were allowed to play in the Asian Games as FIFA withdrew the restriction imposed upon them. 

Brazil ’s International won the World Club Cup by defeating Barcelona FC of Spain by 1-0. Al Akali of Minar achieved the 3rd place by beating the American FC by 2-1.  

India slid down to 157th in the FIFA rankings. Series of failures was very much the cause of this downslide. 

Fabio Cannavaro, the skipper of Italy , was chosen as the FIFA Best-Footballer-of-the-Year. Marta of Brazil was the Best-Woman-Footballer-of-the-Year. 

Brazil was chosen as the best team. Best goal-keeper chosen was Buffon. Germany was chosen as the Best-Fair Play-Team. Faketti of Italy was chosen as the Best FIFA President posthumously. 

Edinho, the son of Pele, was released from prison after ten months of imprisonment.
