This novel initiative by the city's newest community based football club has taken Mumbai by storm and the city's sports loving community has responded in typical fashion, with teams from Colaba to Dharavi, Churchgate to Vasai, VT to Navi Mumbai and Bandra to Ambarnath registering in huge numbers.

Where man divides, sport unites. Nothing justifies this better than the response from the people of Mumbai to the Mumbai FC Junior Champs programme. Cutting across barriers of economic disparity, caste, creed and religion, football teams have come together at 16 zones across the demographic spread of the city over four weekends to indulge themselves in the world's most popular game --- Football.

The action on the first weekend beginning February 22 kicks off at the Thakur Ground, Kandivli, the PWD Ground at Malwani, Malad and the St. Andrew's Ground, Bandra. This will be followed by the tournament at the Bhavan's College ground, Andheri on February 25 and 26. The following weekend (February 29 to March 2) will see action shifting to Navi Mumbai, Chembur, Mulund, Vikhroli-Ghatkopar and Dadar-Matunga and to Saki Naka, Andheri on March 6 and 7. March 7 to 9 will see football action in the zones of Sion-Dharavi, Mazgaon-Byculla, Mumbai Central to Worli, which will also cover areas like Colaba, Kalbadei, Girgaum and Mahim, and the zone of Thane-Ambarnath.

115 teams will be seen in action in Bandra, while 115 teams will play in Kandivli, with the Malad zone seeing 62 teams in action. The Andheri zone has attracted a mammoth 149 teams. These teams are divided into the four age categories of under-10, under-14, under-18 among boys and under-16 among girls. The winner from each category will advance into the city finals, which will be played at the Police Ground, Ghatkopar on March 14 to 16, 2008.

For the first time ever in the footballing history of the city has a private club endeavoured to take on the mammoth task of getting the entire city together on the common platform of football. The tremendous popularity the game enjoys can be gauged from the response, which has seen up to 1000 teams registering for the event. Of course, the response also reflects positively on the commitment of Mumbai FC towards making true their credo, which is to give every Mumbaikar an opportunity to play football, transcending all limitations.

Mumbai FC has also set a record of sorts by having all the participants in the Mumbai FC Junior Champs programme insured against injury

The Mumbai FC Junior Champs will also be the launch pad for talented footballers to fulfil their potential of going ahead and playing for reputed clubs and their country as talent scouts will pick them for future intensified football training under the tutelage of Mumbai FC's reputed coaches.

Every participant will be given a certificate, while there will be a man of the match award for each match, which will be a certificate, a memento and a free entry ticket to Esselworld. The winners of the zonal finals in all categories will get a cash award of Rs 5,000, while the winners of the city finals will get a cash award of Rs 25,000, besides a goody bag with a replica of the Mumbai FC T-shirt, a sipper and other gifts. New Delhi Heroes advances to semi-finals
in 4th Lt. Governors Invitational DDA Football Tournament

0-1 [Pradeep, 30th minute], 1-1 [Baba Tunde, 87th minute], 2-1 [Baba Tunde, 92nd minute]

Osian’s New Delhi Heroes stomped their supremacy in the tournament by defeating Ahbab FC in their last league match played at Ambedkar Stadium today. Chima, ONDH kept the pace and control of the match but could not convert the chances they created, on the other hand Ahbab FC utilized their only chance in the 30th minute through Pradeep.

The finish was reminiscent to the 1999 Championship Finals when Manchester United Clinched the trophy by scoring 3 goals in the last 2 minutes, the same was repeated when Baba Tunde scored 2 goals within 4 minutes maintaining ONDH’s clean sheet in the tournament.

In the other Match

: Group A: ONGC, Mumbai 4 - 0 Peerless SC

Goals: Henry 11', Jatin Singh Bisht 44', MC Dhanesh 52', Gour Naskar.

Osian’s New Delhi Heroes drub Peerless SC

1-0 [Amjad Hussain, 3rd minute], 2-0 [Baba Tunde, 30th minute], 3-0 [Gyan Moyon, 85th minute]

18.02.2008: Osian’s New Delhi Heroes continued their streak in the ongoing 4th Lt. Governor’s Invitational DDA Football Tournament by defeating Peerless SC today.

N D Heroes broke the deadlock in the 3rd minute itself of the first half when Amjad Hussain volleyed the ball into the net from the top of the 18 yard( 1 - 0). ND Heroes, riding high on the confidence netted another goal in the 30th minute where Baba Tunde gave a powerful chip shot from 25 yards and posted the ball right into the goal( 2 - 0).

The second half of the match was even faster. Both the teams tried creating chances and played an attacking game but still ND Heroes made the best out of the time. In the 85th minute a cross-in from the left flank by Buangpuia led to a scramble in the dee, while Gyan Moyon took advantage of the confusion and scored the third goal for ND Heroes( 3 - 0).

Unfortunately the Kolkata side who began as strong contender for the event failed to display their prowess as they did in the recently concluded Kolkata League and IFA Shield Qualifier P.Dutta Memorial Tournament where they matched up strongly to the local giants like Mohun Bagan, East Bengal Cub and Mohmdn Sporting. Peerless finished a creditable 4th in the Calcutta Premier League. Peerless shall play its last league match on the 20th February with ONGC (Mumbai).

Coached by Chima Okorie, ND Heroes lived up to their reputation and remain favorites to lift the trophy.

Churchill beat 10 Men East Bengal in away match

10.02.2008:Nabarun Mukherjee::Dipu, the young ERP specialist, working for a German Multinational who had come to the city from abroad for a project, was looking utterly dejected as he was coming out of the field. Staying abroad for most of the year, of course in connection with his profession, one thing that this East Bengal fanatic does religiously every day is to surf the e-editions of Bengali News papers- not to know about the happenings of his hometown! but to find out if there is any line of news of his most favorite passion of life, the Great East Bengal Club. Well, at this juncture, we are not for a debate as to how great East Bengal is as of now, but this much we can assure you that the club is in real real trouble….not because they have lost the match to Churchill today, not because they are in the brink of relegation form the I-League, not also for the fact that the players have lost their confidence in them…. but, the worst ….., the supporters have lost faith upon the team. Trust me, there was not a single so-called “mother-sister” tongue - twisters (!), no agitation after the match no protest…. Nothing. As if the supporters knew the destiny long before the match started! East Bengal fans, so well known for their love and passion for their club are now dumb…. crestfallen…. And why to blame them! The way East Bengal was playing in the 2nd session today, it only reminded us the story of the smaller clubs of Kolkata which used to play football in the air and try to tickle away time by no means or the other only to be so happy to keep the match draw or keep the goal margin lower in their favour! At least not expected from a club of the stature of East Bengal … and this is where that pains millions of Dipu(s) who still come to the field with the belief that miracle happens and wishes to see East Bengal in its past glory.

East Bengal however started the match in a positive note. With Owino leading the defence from the front, both Snehasish and Alvito got ample opportunity to feed Nabi, who, playing alone in the forward line, did his best to disturb the opponent defence at regular intervals.

Both the teams took time to settle down looking for counter-attack based scoring opportunities. But just as the home team started to look focused, some rustic play by Jayanta Sen forced Referee Arjunan to give him marching orders, which rattled the entire rhythm of the game. Churchill, now with their manpower advantage over the rival team gradually took control of the midfield and with Odafe-Mboyo Iyomi combination creating ripples in the rival defence, it was only a matter of time as to when East Bengal would succumb to the sustained pressure of Churchill. However Churchill had to wait as long as 76th minute to get the desired goal when a viciously turning cross from Naoba Singh was blissfully headed into the nets by Mboyo, even as Surukumar spotted with him to clear the cross (1-0). For the first time in the match, goalkeeper Subrata, if he had been a little more agile about his position sense, might have averted the disaster. Otherwise, Subrata was rock solid beneath the bars and saved at least a dozen sure -goals, for which he was rightly awarded the man-of- the match. Both the teams thereafter lost scoring opportunities and the match ended with a solitary goal difference between the teams.

East Bengal : A Tale of Two Sundays

03.02.2008: That was a sunday when Eastbengal went to the relegation zone after being defeated by their arch rival Mohun Bagan. Interestingly today is also a sunday when they beat Mahindra United and somewhat revived from the relegation nightmare. Though 3 more matches are remaining which may decide their fate and final position in the I-League points table.

East Bengal picked up three valuable points with a solitary goal victory over Mahindra United in an I-league match in Kolkata on Sunday

Syed Rahim Nabi once again proved to be a better Striker than being a left Back. Today, coach Monoranjan Bhattacharya made a few unconventional changes making Alvito and Nabi play in Striking positions. His innovative change soon paid off when Nabi netted a gem in the 5th minute of play, off a marvellous final pass from Alvito who got that from Jayanta Sen( 1 - 0).

The first half was completely dominated by Eastbengal and they looked fearsome by their body language and aggressive attack on the opponent Mahindra United. The mighty Mahindra continued to show a poor streak of performance missing on a good number of occasions.

Overall it was a crucial match for Eastbengal to survive in the I-League. After today's match, Eastbengal stand in the third 8th position with 15 points from 15 matches.

East Bengal Captain and only scorer Syed Rahim Nabi has been selected Man of the Match

EAST BENGAL: 24-Subrata Pal; 27- Surkumar Singh,4-Julius Owino, 12-Anupam Sarkar, 5-Debabrata Roy; 23-Mehtab Hossain,7-Jayanta Sen (Vanlal Rova), 26-Mehrajuddin Wadoo, 34-Snehasis Chakraborty,19-S.Rahim Nabi, 9-Alvito D'Cunha(Vimal Parier).

Yellow Card: Debabrata Roy 58', Snehashish Chakrabarty 63' (EB)

Maradona Denies:I never said Sorry

Argentina legend Diego Maradona denies he has ever apologised for the "Hand of God" goal he scored against England in the 1986 World Cup.

The former playmaker said he was misquoted by The Sun newspaper as apologising to English fans for the illegitimate first goal he scored in their quarter-final clash.

"I said that a long time has passed since that and that history can't be rewound," Maradona told radio station La Red.

"They changed my words. I'll have to talk with the translator who was there to ask him for an explanation."

The World Cup winner, who won 91 international caps, has also repeated that he is waiting for a call from the Argentinean Football Association (AFA) for a chance to work with the national team.

"They never gave me the opportunity to work with the national team," he said.

"They told me that the doors were open for me, but they never gave me the key.

"Sadly, when you face Blatter (Sepp, FIFA president) and Grondona (Julio, AFA president) all the doors close."
