scored the first goal within 3 minutes of the match. Bagan, who dominated the

heading home a Dharamjit Singh's corner in 44 minutes .Substitute James Singh
scored from a free-kick in the 0th minute to send Bagan players into raptures.
Salgaocar kept on minimizing and equalizing the goals tally every time especially in
the second half and reduced the margin through Boniface Ambani (13') and
Chimaokwu's strikes in the 20', 52' and 65' minutes, but it was James Singh of
Mohun Bagan whose fantastic free kick gave Bagan an upperhand and in turn they
won the match.

Dempo bows Mohunbagan 2-0
|
12.12.2007: Amal Pai - Goa:
Kolkata giant Mohunbagan seemed a little tentative and circumspect against the
defending champions Dempo, in front of their home crowd. The match had just
begun and no sooner than the 14th minute, the hosts got an upperhand when
Nicholas Borges netted a gem which had come off the post after being hit by
Captain Beto.
Meanwhile, Baichung-Bareto duo continued to try and build pressure on the
opposition and in due course Baichung attempted a free kick that landed straight
into the hands of Dempo golie. But luck again bitrayed the Mariners when a shot
off Baichung rebound back off the post near the end of 1st half.
After a long quite second half, Nicholas Borges again succeeded a goal in the
73rd minute. This time he lobbed the ball to perfection over Shilton's head, a gem
of a goal. It was clear by the end that Dempo scored whenever Mohunbagan
missed chances.

Sporting defies Salgaocar's threat
|
10.12.2007:Amal Pai - Goa:
It was a treat to watch the tête-à-tête between Salgaocar and Sporting Clube de
Goa in Goa today. despite of the kinematics of both the teams, the 1st half went
on goal-less. But the climax began with the commencement of 2nd half when Salgaocar's Felix
Chimaokwu shot through Sporting Goa's defence but their Goalkeeper Felix fumbled
right in front of Milagres Gonsalves and he ultimately succeeded to score the first
goal of the match in 48 th minutes ( 1 - 0).
Soon after a few minutes (61minutes) Sporting Clube de Goa's Elija Junior managed to convert
a cross from Harmanjot Singh Khabra into a splendid equalizer ( 1 - 1) through a bicycle Kick
and saved the game for his team.
After today's match, both the teams find themselves at the bottom of the
I-League with only 2 points in 4 matches.

East Bengal Stopped Dempo's Winning Streak in I -League
|
09.12.2007:Amal Pai - Goa: History repeated itself like last year,
this time too, when Dempo drew with East Bengal ( 2 - 2 score line ) in their first
meeting in the I-League here at Goa today. Last year in 11th ONGC National
Football league, East Bengal played a goalless draw with Dempo in the Ist leg
but defeated them in 2nd leg match at Kolkata by 5 - 3.
Today East Bengal continued to create pressure on the opponent's defence during
the first 30 minutes of the game. Eventually East Bengal's McDonald Mukansi
succeeded in scoring a goal in 25th minutes (1 - 0). Receiving a pass from
Edmilson, Mukansi moved past Dempo defender John Dias and netted the ball in.
However Dempo got the equalizer from a counter attack immediately when
Valereano Rebelo equalized in the 26th minutes (1 - 1) by beating M. Bolaji of
East Bengal. Meanwhile East Bengal defender M.Bolaji was shown Yellow Card for
losing temper inside the field.
In the 2nd half the Red and Yellow Brigade succeeded to disturb the Dempo
defence at regular intervals and in the due course East Bengal's Brazilian striker
Edmilson Pardal scored a superb Goal in the 58th minutes off a measured pass
received from Captain Alvito D Counha and thereby giving his team a 2 - 1 lead.
The Score Board remained the same till 82 minutes, when another Brazilian Striker
and Captain of Dempo, Beto scored the equalizer (2 - 2) for his team off a final
pass from Mahesh Gawli, thereby saving his tensed coach Armando Colaco from
a sure defeat. Valereano of Dempo and Mehtaab Hossain of East Bengal saw
Yellow Card.
East Bengal Goalkeeper Subrata Paul's outstanding performance fetched him the
Man of The Match title today. Dempo and JCT are leading
the I - league table with 10 points (4 matches) each while East Bengal is in 2nd
position with 7 points (4matches). After today’s goal Edmilson Pardal of East
Bengal and Eduardo Escober of JCT becomes the joint top scorers with 5 goals each.

Mohun Bagan's First Victory in I -League

|
08.12.2007 :Nabarun Mukherjee:At last goddess Kali had her blessings
on Mohun Bagan as they registered their maiden victory over unfancied Air India
here at Salt Lake Stadium Today. A brace of goals by Baichung Bhutia in the
21st and 84th minute of the game not only sealed the fate of the Airmen but
at the same time Carlos must be grateful to Baichung for rescuing him from the
brink of his career. Had Mohun Bagan not won this match, surely Carlos would
have to celebrate a dull Christmas this season!
The score however does not reflect the true story as the Airmen had definite
enjoyed territorial advantage over the game without thieir Suleh Musa and Njoe
Jean and Mohun Bagan mostly relying on counter attacks. It was one of such
counter attacks that Baichung scored from inside the box off a pass from
Lalwampuia (1-0) when the game was only 21st minutes old.
Down by the goal, Air India increased their thrust over the rival defence, but for
poor finishing in the attacking third they were unable to alter the score line. After
a long gap, N.S. Manju taking on the field for the home team did a fine job
specially repelling the centers of Napoleon and Samson Singh from either side of
the wings. Otherwise, it was more inefficiency of the Airmen than the credit of the
Mohun Bagan defence that helped the home team to wrap the game with full
points.
After the lemon break Mohun Bagan started with renewed tempo resulting in the
creation of some golden chances courtesy Barretto- Baichung and Barretto –Lalam
chemistry but the Air defence system was too stealth to give up to the wishes
of the Mohun Bagan forwards except for once when in the 86th minute of the
game, Baichung clinched on to a through from Barretto and sailed passed
Dhanchandra Singh to place the ball inside the nets. (2-0).
With this first win in the I-League; Mohun Bagan now can be surely motivated
to prove their worth in the coming matches.

MOHUN BAGAN DOWN BUT NOT OUT

|
07.12.2007:Saurabh Rai:
After two back-to-back defeats and a draw in their own backyard, Kolkata giants
Mohun Bagan are surely under pressure. For a team considered to be one of the
contenders for the I league title this season, the take-off has been far from
perfect. The Green and maroons are now looking at the match against Air India
to start the revival.
It has not been a very smooth sailing for Mohun Bagan in the I league this season.
First JCT surprised them and then rookies Viva Kerala shocked the three times
National League champions. In their third match against Sporting Clube de Goa,
Bagan again failed to excite their die-hard supporters in a lack luster 1-1 draw.
Panic button has not yet been pressed at Bagan but they have surely pulled up
their socks. They seem to have realized that the I league is a whole new world
where their Kolkata League title has no meaning.
Bagan plays their fourth I league match against Air India and the mood in the
green and maroon camp is optimistic. They know another fumble can be catastrophic. Their training session proved they don’t want another slip up.
Set plays were given importance with coach Carlos asking the players to take free
kicks and corners again and again, till they got it right. Bhaichung and Lalampuia
were also seen fine-tuning their finishing skills.
Jose Barreto who is now fit said “ we must win the next match against Air India
as we have already dropped important points at home” he further added that he
and Bhaichung will be able to penetrate Air India’s defense which has kept a clean
chit in the last three matches.N.S.Manju also practiced and seemed to be fit but
he was not sure whether he’ll start the match against Air India
Air India is a very organized team having drawn all their last 3 matches, which
shows their defense is intact. Interesting battle is on the cards. Nothing less
than a win will satisfy Bagan, only time can tell what will unfold at the Salt lake
stadium on Saturday evening. Will it be a start of Mohun Bagan’s resurrection or
will there be another heartbreak for the home side, one that they cannot afford?
Probable Team of Mohun Bagan: Shilton Paul, N.S.Manju, N.Mohanraj, Sanjeev Maria, Douglas Da Silva, S.Venkatesh,
Suhashish Raychowdhury, Jonathan Bobo, Dharamjit Singh, Barreto, Baichung.

HOMELESS WORLD CUP DOCUMENTARY TO PREMIERE AT SUNDANCE
|
03.04.2007:KICKING IT, the documentary about the Homeless World Cup,
an international football tournament changing lives, has been selected to World
Premiere at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, Park City, Utah, in January 2008.
KICKING IT, directed by Susan Koch and produced by Ted Leonsis, AOL vice
chairman emeritus, is an intimate look at homeless athletes who find a greater
goal on the football field as they journey with 48 nations to the Cape Town 2006
Homeless World Cup.
The film chronicles the lives of seven players taking a once in a lifetime opportunity
to represent their country while overcoming poverty and addiction. The players
come from war torn Afghanistan, the slums of Kenya, the drug rehab clinics of
Dublin, Ireland, the streets of Charlotte, North Carolina, the overflowing public
shelters of Madrid, Spain, and the shadow culture of the illegal rural immigrants to
the big city of St. Petersburg, Russia.
Kat Byles, Media Director, Homeless World Cup said: “That the inspirational
story of the Homeless World Cup will be shown first at Sundance is a fitting
testimony to the courage, determination and spirit of the players. It is milestone
achievement for the Homeless World Cup and one we hope will demonstrate the
power of football to change lives to a wider audience around the world.
"Soccer is the world's most popular sport and played in virtually every country
around the globe, while homelessness is one of the world's most pervasive
problems," said Susan Koch, Director. "When you bring the two together, lives
can
be transformed. We found extraordinary people who for the first time were given
the chance to stand tall and not be invisible."
Koch is an Emmy and Peabody award winning filmmaker. Her 2007 film MARIO'S
STORY premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival where it received the Audience
Award for Best Documentary Feature. KICKING IT was co-directed and edited by
Jeff Werner. Neil Barrett was Director of Photography.
AOL Vice Chairman Emeritus Ted Leonsis, whose first documentary Nanking won
one of the major awards at the 2007 Sundance Festival, said of Kicking It, "Films
can bring people together, and amplify passion. We are thrilled to help spotlight
these compelling individuals to show sports' powerful ability to give hope,
focus and balance to us all."
The Homeless World Cup, based in Scotland, was founded by one of the world
leading social entrepreneurs, Mel Young, also co-founder of The Big Issue
Scotland, International Network of Street Papers and New Consumer Magazine.

East Bengal won against Salgaocar in I League 3rd Match
|
03.12.2007 :Nabarun Mukherjee:With the referee blowing the final whistle,
Subrata Bhattacharya must be thanking his luck a thousand times to leave the
field with three full points, as East Bengal struggled hard to beat a 10 –men down
Salgaokar three goals to two here at Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata.
Salgaokar does not deserve to loose the match but for some marvelous saves
from goalkeeper Subrata Paul and of course their own inefficiency to put the balls
inside the nets at the right time cost them three dear points.
Both the teams started on an aggressive note and tried to take the early lead
resulting in a good show of soccer after quite some time. It was in the 9th minute
of the game Salgaokar would have taken the lead had not the keeper Subrata Pal
came up with a timely save off a head from Felix.
East Bengal got their first break in the 20th minute of the game when Edmilson
headed home the ball inside the goal off a measured cross from Nabi as the rival
defenders looked spellbound at the sudden speed of the event.
Thereafter Edmilson got two more golden opportunities to increase the tally but
could not alter the score line more due to his own fault rather than the efficiency
of the rival defenders.
Even though down by a solitary goal, Salgaokar were a rejuvenated side after the
lemon break and quickly got their equalizer in the 49th minute of the game when
a viciously turning free kick from Nicholas Rodrigves from just outside the box was
beautifully headed in by Biju Kumar over the heads of the East Bengal defenders
(1-1)
However it took only a few minutes more for East Bengal to get their second goal
of the match when a flying header by Ashim found the nets off a cross from
Edmilson.
Ashim had a wonderful match today and so did opponent striker Felix too. Both
the strikers tried to do justice to their name by disturbing the opponent defence
time and again and creating quite a number of scoring opportunities.
In the mean time Mukansi was bought in place of Chandan Das (62’) but that does
not yielded desired results except for a brace of Edu-Mukansi combined moves
and some unnecessary exuberance of the latter.
It was however against the run of the play, that East Bengal got their third goal
when referee P.K.Bose awarded a genuine penalty as Biju Kumar tripped Edmilson
inside the box. Edmilson placed the ball inside the nets to make it 3-1 in favour
of East Bengal.
In a mean time a scuffle between the players dearly cost Salgaokar, when Remus
Gomes was shown red card for hurting the rival without ball while Alvito of East
Bengal shown Yellow card for the same offence only!
Thereafter, surprisingly enough, East Bengal, instead of keeping the pressure on
the 10-men down Salgakar, went for a defensive play. With as many as eight
players defending for the team, Salgaokar using their two wings valiantly fought
back into the game and created enough opportunity to reduce the margin. Out of
one such move, a Felix pass to Tulunga found the latter only to beat the keeper
Subrata Paul to which he did no mistake (3-2). The match then witnessed few ups
and downs with Salgaokar getting more opportunities to alter the score line but
for some unbelievable saves from East Bengal keeper Subrata Pal, East Bengal
would have faced yet another disaster.
With six points from three matches, a much relieved East Bengal will now leave for
Goa on 7th next for their second round of I-league matches.
East Bengal: 24-Subrata Paul, 2-M.Suresh(12-Anupam Sarkar), 3-M.Bolaji, 5-Debabrata Roy, 29-Soumik Dey,
7-Jayanta Sen (23-Mehtab Hossain),9-Alvito,14-Chandan Das(15-Mukansi),19-Rahim Nabi,
25-Asim Biswas,30-Edmilson,
Salgaocar:2-Marcus Basumatari;6 - Nicholas L Rodrigues,7 - Felix Chimaokwu,8 - Angelo Colaco,
11- PK Anil Kumar,12 - Remus Gomes,17-TV Biju Kumar,19 - Malswam Tulunga,
25-Rocus Lamare ,30 - Francis Fernandez,22 - Harry Habinama.

Mohun Bagan - Sporting Goa Match ended 1 - 1 draw
|
02.12.2007 :Nabarun Mukherjee:Mohun Bagan wasted yet another
opportunity to gain full points when they were held for a 1-1 draw by one of the
so called weakest teams of I-League - Sporting Club De Goa (SCG) here at Salt Lake
Stadium today. Goalless at the lemon break, both the teams are now with 1 point
each and are placed at the lowest strata of league table as Mohun Bagan 9th
and Sporting 10th.
Mohun Bagan, unlike the other two matches started with a 4-4-2 formation.
With as many as 6 defenders guarding the citadel, Barretto and Lalkamal was
entrusted to feed the forwards Isfaq and Baichung to do the wonders. Surprising
to see a team like Mohun Bagan, who had lost both their earlier matches playing
so defensively from the very beginning of the game!
SCG started the game in pace and cleverly crowding the midfield certainly had
territorial advantage over their counterpart throughout the game. However Mohun
Bagan got their first positive chance in the 32nd minute of the match when Isfaq
failed to beat the goalkeeper as his shot went wide off the post. Minutes later
Barretto and Baichung showed their individual brilliance but were cunningly
trapped offside by the rival defenders. In the extra minutes of the 1st session,
Baichung got two more positive chances but failed to alter the score line.
Mohun Bagan started their 2nd session in a more promising note and was
immediately rewarded when Barretto edged past rival defenders and made no
mistake to put the ball inside the nets in 48th Minutes. (1-0).
However their joy was short-lived when in the 56th minute, a costly defensive
lapse helped Felix to beat Shilton and equalize for his team (1-1). Thereafter the
ball mainly hovered around the midfield with both team wasting occasional scoring
opportunities. Mohun Bagan tried their last by bringing in Dharamjit in place of
Anit (60`) but by then the match had already gone out of hand.
Mohun Bagan Striker Barreto was awarded the ONGC Man of the Match title.
With one point form three home matches, perhaps now it is to be seen whether
Mohun Bagan can remain within the top 5 teams of the league!

JCT 2nd Victory in away match
|
01.12.2007 : Nabarun Mukherjee:East Bengal tasted their maiden defeat in the hands off JCT when they were
routed by the mill men 3-1 in a one-sided match today here at Salt Lake Stadium,
Kolkata. The mill-men, who were leading by a solitary goal in the first half
converted two more in the second half, while the consolation goal of East Bengal
was scored by Edmilson through a penalty.
In one of one of the worst matches that East Bengal has played so far in this
season, Coach Subrata can be sure of having such similar nightmares,
(if not more!) when they will face the Goan teams in their home turf in the next
month, if some overhauling of the defence is not done immediately. With both
Suresh and Surukumar out of the match due to injury problems, both Debabrata
and Madhab looked too brittle to resist the onslaught of Edu, Marcos and Sunil
Chettri, who with their speed and superior physical endurance ripped through the
East Bengal defence time and again.
Both teams started cautiously not to concede goal at the first instance, but JCT
utilizing their wings gradually gained control over the midfield. Visibly more fit and
strong, JCT surely had territorial advantage over their rivals in the first session.
That the foreign recruits of JCT viz Edu, Julius and Marcos are far superior than
their counterparts were amply proved when in the 43rd minute of the first half,
Brazilian Edu blissfully put the ball inside the nets from a free kick taken by Marcos
from just outside the box. (0-1).
East Bengal tried to come back in the game in the second half, but except for a
few moves did little to mend the mistakes. It was on a counter attack that they
got their maiden goal when Edmilson, getting a ball from fellow teammate, while
racing towards the goal was wrongfully tackled by Julious Akpale, rightly to be
awarded a penalty. This time Edmilson did no mistake to put the ball inside the
nets (1-1). Just as every body hoping for an East Bengal comeback, in the 59th
minute of the game, a frikick off Marcos from near the rival penalty box found
unguarded Edu, who wasted little time to put it into the nets, as the entire
defence including goalkeeper Abhra looked spellbound at the sudden speed of
the event (1-2). Truly, a goal treat to watch.
East Bengal, by bringing in Mukasi and Meheraj in places of Dipankar and Mehetab
respectively tried a last fightback, but perhaps today was not their day. The last
nail was placed in their coffin by non other than Edu himself, when Sunil Chettri
beautifully dodged out Bolaji and essayed a measured cross to Edu ,who beat
Madhab and Abhra and placed it into the nets (1-3).
