SAMBA KING BRAZIL TO HOST 2014 FIFA WORLD CUP
|
31.10.2007: Brazil was chosen host of the 2014 World Cup on Tuesday,
returning the showcase event to the soccer-mad country that held the
tournament in 1950 and has captured the title a record five times.Brazil was the
only candidate and won in a unanimous vote by the executive committee of the
sport’' governing body."Soccer is not only a sport for us," Brazilian President Luiz
Inacio Lula da Silva said. "It's more than that: Soccer for us is a passion, a
national passion."
FIFA president Sepp Blatter said Brazil now has "not only the right, but the
responsibility" to organize the 2014 tournament. Blatter then handed the World
Cup trophy to Lula.Lula, who flew in for the announcement, promised that Brazil "will now with great
pride do its homework." And, he added, "if everything works out well, we will win
once again a World Cup."
The vote came on the same day the 2011 Women's World Cup was awarded to
Germany. Germany, the host of the 2006 men’s World Cup, beat out Canada.
After the withdrawal of Colombia in April, Brazil was the sole candidate, the choice
of the South American continent enjoying the right to host the event. Brazil had
been told by FIFA it wasn't guaranteed the tournament simply because there
were no opponents, saying it had to provide a solid bid package.
In Brazil, 50 mountain climbers hung an enormous national team jersey bearing the
slogan "The 2014 World Cup is Ours" from majestic Sugar Loaf mountain in Rio de
Janeiro. At the famed Maracana Stadium, workers spread flags across the field
reading, "Maracana is ours and so is the 2014 World Cup."
Blatter said the lack of competition from other South American nations was one
reason behind FIFA’s decision Monday to do away with the rotation system that
gave each continent a turn at hosting the World Cup. The decision takes effect
with the 2018 tournament.

Margao 30.10.2007: Lebanon moved into the next round of the 2010 FIFA
World Cup qualifying Match after holding India to a 2-2 draw here on Tuesday.
India fought back to hold Lebanon but the home team's effort was not enough to
see them through to the next stage.
India, who needed a 3-0 margin victory to qualify for the next round, took the
lead in 30th minute but failed to take advantage of the scoring chances in the
second-half at Nehru Stadium.
Substitute Mohammed Ghaddar who was instrumental in Lebanon's big win at home
against India, was again their saviour when he scored both the goals in the 72th
minute and 86th minute. The hosts were reduced to 10 men when goalkeeper
Subrata Paul was given his marching orders by Jordanian referee Salem Mujghef
by showing him RED CARD at 72 minute and being awarded a penalty in favour of
Lebanon and Md. Ghaddar made no mistake to put it into the net.
Bhaichung Bhutia managed to level the score 2-2 when he scored in the injury
time through a header of a corner kick taken by Steven Dias. Thus Lebanon with
an aggregate of 6-3 made it to the next round.

India Ready For 2010 Qualifier In Lebanon
|
07.10.2007:India Ready For 2010 Qualifier In Lebanon Indian coach Bob Houghton
is ready for the first leg of the 2010 World Cup qualifier against Lebanon in Beirut
on Monday. The South Asians have been training in Dubai ahead of the game and leave for the
Lebanese capital on Saturday night."One can never gamble in football. Our focus is to play well and give a good
account of what we are capable of as a team," India's coach Bob Houghton told
Gulf News after the team’s final training session.
"We have to bear in mind that these qualifiers are in two legs, and Monday's
match is only the first half. We will still have to play at home against Lebanon,"
Houghton said. The Englishman has some knowledge of the west Asian team.
"Luckily, we watched them play against Syria [Syria won 1-0] and that is to our
advantage," he said.Houghton, who coached China at the 2004 Asian Cup, would not be unhappy with
taking a draw back to India for the second leg on October 28.
"Even a draw away from home is considered a good result. The boys are in good
spirits and I think we have had the best preparation, taking in a tough friendly in
the bargain," the coach said. The coach believes that training in Dubai was the best thing to do.
"It's simple, we do not have the same facilities and infrastructure, so this is the
best we could have done," the coach observed.

Mohammedan Sporting surprise East Bengal

|
06.10.2007:A win could have helped them to come at the top of the table. But
East Bengal failed against a gritty Mohammedan Sporting in Kolkata Premier Division
football league. The black and white brigade took the lead through Adebayo early
in the first half….And it was Edmilson who restored parity for East Bengal again
through a measured direct free-kick.
East Bengal took the control of the match just after scoring the equalizer but
failed to take the lead as the Mohammedan defenders were able to hold on till the
first half.
The second half started and Mohammedan Sporting displayed a different form of
football altogether. They matched East Bengal in every aspect of the game and
the winning goal came through Kuluthungan who romped home following a ball
which rebounded off the cross-piece.
The defeat in the hands of Mohammedan would make the task difficult for East
Bengal as the red and gold are now in a must win situation against the arch rivals
Mohun Bagan to win the Kolkata league.
Final Result: East Bengal 1 - 2 Mohammedan S.C
Scorers:Edmilson Pardal 32' :::::: Adebayo Adeyusi 2',Kalia Kulothungan 80'

Blatter's Visit Was Turning Point For Indian Football
|
01.10.2007:The team manager of the Indian national team Pradip Kumar Choudhary
believes that the visit of FIFA President Sepp Blatter to the country earlier this
year was a turning point for the game in the giant South Asian nation.
The Indians are currently in Dubai for a training camp to prepare for the first leg of
the 2010 World Cup qualifier against Lebanon on October 8.
"Things have been so very different for football after Blatter's visit," the former
India and Mohan Bagan skipper told Gulf News.
During his April visit, Blatter talked of the potential of India on the global stage but
only with greater professionalism and investment.
"His visit was followed by some quick results and this too has assisted the game in
India," Choudhary added.
"Certain changes have taken place and are currently taking place in Indian football.
We are getting better media exposure and that too is helping us the game," said
the former Indian skipper.
Choudhary knows that cricket will always be hugely popular in India but believes
that football can compete.
"Cricket is still a game for the upper middle class and higher classes. But throw a
football and you can have at least 40 youngsters playing," Choudhary said.
However, India recently won the eight-nation Nehru Cup and is moving in the right
direction.
"Winning one tournament is easy, but we now need to maintain this momentum
and put in some real hard work," Choudhary said.
"Things are suddenly looking very good for football in India."
