"I WANT TO REPRESENT INDIA IN WORLD CUP FOOTBALL "

The biggest dream of my life is to represent India at the highest level of International Football. I want to represent my country in the Women’s World Cup Football.

Guess who this "I" is who dares to dream India's participation in the World Cup?

Confused?

This “I“ is Oniam Bembem Devi of Manipur .Can’t recognize? Lets remove all this cloud of confusion.

O.Bembem Devi was the “AIFF Women Footballer of the Year” for five years. She has scored about 50 International Goals for Indian National Women football Team. Recently at Haldia in West Bengal, Manipur emerged as Champion in the 16th senior National Women Football Championship 2008. This year is Manipur’s 11 triumph in a row (from 1998 - 2008) and Manipur was under the leadership of O.Bembem Devi. She was also a scorer in her team’s 4 – 1 victory over Orissa in the Final match of the Championship.

After their historic win, jubilant Bem Bem Devi was speechless in joy. After a few minutes the “PIN UP LADY OF INDIAN SOCCER AND INDIA’s MARTA” was ready to answer the questions of kolkatafootball.com representative Subhransu Roy at Haldia.

Q. Congratulations! Bem Bem on your team’s winning the Women’s National again this year.

Bem Bem : Thank You.

Q. When did you start playing Football?

Bem Bem: I started playing Football when I was 13 or 14.At that time I was a schoolgirl and played football just for fun. Actually I started playing Football seriously at the age of 15.

Q. What was your parent’s reaction for your Football Love?

Bem Bem: Well initially my father wasn’t interested in sports. He often asked me to concentrate on my studies. Sometimes he even got angry at my football passion. But when I represented my country in the year 1995, my father started encouraging me to play more football. But from the beginning of my career, my mother was always in favour of my playing football. Today whatever I have achieved in the green fields of my state Manipur or India, the credit must go to my mother.

Q. Please tell us something about your Childhood.

Bem Bem: Actually I’m from Imphal town. I was born in a peasant family and studied in a local Primary school. Then I took admission in Imphal Town School. In my school I was a very naughty girl and was always very keen to participate in Sports. As I am from Meitei community, the community well known for sports craze, we have many games to play. Even in our community we play some indigenous games like”YUBI LAKHBI” ( capture of Coconut),”MUKNAKANGJEI” (Manipuri Wrestling), ”SAGOLKANGJEI”(Manipuri Polo) etc. But my choice was always Football and I used to skip my class often to play football.

But when I represented my country in the year 1995 in 10th Asian Women's Football Championship, then 13th Bankok Asian Games in 1998 and so on, my father started encouraging me to play more football. But from the beginning of my career, my mother was always in favour of my playing football. Q. Now tell something about your Football Career.

Bem Bem: As I said earlier; I started playing the game at the age of my 13/14. Then at the age of 15/16 I took the game seriously. Initially I played with Boys of my village, and then I joined the local girls football club. In the year 1995 I got a chance to represent the Manipur State Women’s Football Team. In that very year I represented the Senior National Football team in Asian Cup. From then onwards, I am a regular player of the Sr. Indian Women Team.Currently I’m a footballer of Manipur State Police Sports Cub. I got the job in Manipur Police department in the year 1998.From then onwards; I play for my office team, which has won the Manipur State Women’s Football League several times.

Q. This time you are the captain of Manipur side and have lifted the title for ten consecutive years. Any special feeling for the same?

Bem Bem : On Yes! I am very happy. I can’t express my happiness in words; It’s really a good combination of young blood and experience. Under the coaching of our Sir, Prem Kanta Singh we have really worked hard and got the best result.

Q. But in the final you faced Orissa instead of Bengal. Wasn’t it surprising for you?

Bem Bem: Frankly speaking, a little bit. Because in previous years we met Bengal. This year we were expecting Bengal team at Haldia in their home ground. But we met Orissa instead of Bengal in the final, which I personally feel is a positive thing for Women’s Football in India. New states are emerging as Soccer powers. Besides Orissa; Goa, Tamilnadu, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Assam and Tripura’s performances was quite impressive.

Q. What is the mystery behind the repeated success of Manipur?

Bem Bem: Good infrastructures, cultural legacy, and hard work. We have a regular State League under AMFA, a state level knock-out Tournament and also we have Inter District tournament. In our cultural life especially among MEITEIS, Football is very important component of our daily life. We women in Manipur society don’t face any kind of social restriction regarding playing Football and more over Manipuri girls are very serious and concerned about their work. These are the main reasons behind Manipur’s phenomenal success in Women Football.

Q. How far you are upbeat about the future of Indian Women’s Football?

Bem Bem: I am very hopeful about the future of Indian Women Football team. The Women’s Football Teams of the other states should follow the " Manipur Model" to improve the standard of their game and if they can do so, we can surely look for a bright future.

Q. What is your future plan? Are you willing to involve in Coaching?

Bem Bem: Yes, I have a plan to involve in Coaching in future. I would like to play 3/4 years more then I will opt for coaching. I have planned to obtain AFC coaching license and if possible FIFA coaching license too. But before that I have another dream in my heart to fulfill. My dream is to represent India in Women’s World Cup Football and also to participate in the main stream of Olympic Women’s Football too. That’s All.

Q. Thank you Bem Bem for spending few minutes with www.kolkatafootball.com. We wish you a grand success in future and may your dreams come true.

Bem Bem: Thank you!
