Footballer, born in Karlsruhe, SW Germany. He began playing with
Karlsruhe FC's youth team in 1977, and made his debut for the Bundesliga
(German Football League) in 1990.
He joined Bayern Munich for the 1994–95 season for €2·5 million, a record fee for a goalkeeper at the time. He went on to win many honours at domestic and international level, and in 2000 was voted German Footballer of the Year and Best European goalkeeper. The 2000–1 season was his most successful, having won a fourth German League title and also the UEFA Champions League trophy. He was reserve goalkeeper at the FIFA World Cup finals (1994, 1998) and did not play. Picked as number one for the 2002 finals in Korea/Japan, he was named in the All-Star Team of the tournament, and went on to win the Lev Yashin Award for Best Goalkeeper, and the Golden Ball Award for the best player, the first goalkeeper to win the award. Following his appearance in the 2006 World Cup held in Germany, he retired from international football with 86 caps. |
