The Executive Committee of the All India Football Federation has approved the Format and the Road Map for launching the Professional Football League in India from October, 2007. A delegation from AIFF will visit the concerned States and hold discussions with the Clubs regarding implementation of the various criteria set up for the Professional League. The Professional League in the coming season will begin on the 30th of September, 2007 and conclude in the last week of February, 2008. Ten teams will take part in this league. However at the end of the 2007-08 season two teams will be demoted. A criteria has also been set for participation of the teams in the second division NFL for the 2007-08 season. Among the other decisions taken the AIFF endorsed a National Team Development Programme presented by the National Coach, Mr. Bob Houghton. The programme for participation of the Indian National Team in International Competitions and the training programme was also approved. AIFF is considering keeping a group of players together for two or three years so that they can be provided better training and exposure. The Committee also decided to do away with the zonal competitions and to have the age group National Tournaments at multiple venues within one state. If this is not available the AIFF may consider proposals for co hosting of the tournaments in two neighboring states.
