ONGC I- LEAGUE 2009-10 : ANALYSIS ( UPTO 22nd Round )

Author : RANA BOSE , Kolkata

The 22nd round of this edition of the ONGC I-League witnessed 6 matches this week. Of the three teams from Kolkata, Kingfisher East Bengal were exempted from playing this week because of their AFC commitment. McDowell Mohun Bagan and Chirag United were the two teams representing Kolkata’s challenge this week. Chirag United traveled to Ludhiana to face JCT and McDowell Mohun Bagan hosted a powerful Mahindra United currently in the 2nd position in the league table. Chirag lost the away match to JCT but McDowell Mohun Bagan boys were fluent in their win against the “Jeepmen”.

Dempo Sports Club still maintain pole position with 44 points from 22 games and look to be home and dry in their quest for the I-League trophy. They have a cool 7 points gap from their nearest rival Mahindra United who have accumulated 37 points from identical number of matches.

Match 1 – Lajong FC vs Mumbai FC – The Shillong club played host to Mumbai FC but were shocked by a P. Mohonraj goal as early as the 19th minute. They finally managed a draw and a solitary point when local lad Aibor Khonjee scored as late as the 80th minute. The inconclusive match helped Lajong FC to be clustered with JCT, Viva Kerala and Air India all with 25 points. Lajong FC are in the 9th spot because of the goal difference with Air India in the 10th spot. Mumbai FC, because of this draw have jeopardized their standings in the I-League and are in the penultimate position and are facing the dubious distinction of getting relegated.

Lajong FC next play at home against Kolkata’s Chirag United and Mumbai FC travel to Calicut to play Viva Kerala. with KEB were in desperation to register their first victory in the second leg of the I-League. The Mumbai boys need to pull up their socks hereinafter to stave of relegation.

Match 2 – JCT vs Chirag United – JCT successfully earned full points against a struggling Chirag United which saw them climb to the 7th spot with 25 points whereas Chirag United fell back to the 6th spot with 31 points from 22 outings. JCT’s Nigerian front man, Henry Ezeh scored in the 18th minute to put his side ahead, which they maintained throughout the playing session. JCT next play Air India in Mumbai and in all likelihood it will be keenly contested between two sides of even strengths.

Match 3 – Pune FC vs Viva Kerala – Pune FC’s Brazilian star, Edmar Figuera played enterprising football to score a brace against the Kerala outfit. He was adjudged MoM. Pune FC won by a flattering 3-1 margin as Sampat Kuttimani put them ahead in the 9th minute. Edmar scored the first from a penalty in the 20th minute and thereafter in the 23rd minute. Viva Kerala managed to get the reducer as late as the 52nd minute through Reuben Sanyo. With this win Pune FC are in the 5th spot with 31 points from 21 matches as they still have to play their deferred 18th round match on 20th May against Goa’s Churchill Brothers. Pune FC have a tough away match against Mahindra United in the 23rd round and Viva Kerala host Mumbai FC which could be keenly contested.

Match 4 – McDowell Mohun Bagan vs Mahindra United – Kolkata’s McDowell Mohun Bagan played host to a strong Mahindra United at home on the field-turf in YBK. MMB for a change looked more fluent and could have scored a more facile win than the 3-1 margin had they not squandered a few of the opportunities. Playing the Diamond variant of the 4-4-2 formation with Brazilian Marcos Periera as the defensive medio and the Japanese Ryuoji Seouka playing in the more attacking role they created a lot of opening in the session. Seouka put them ahead with a firm drive in the 11th minute but Mahindra United’s Mohammad Rafi equalized in the 22nd minute through a spot-kick.

Marcos Periera then netted one at the stroke of half time and left wing half Snehaish Chakraborty scored from a rebound in the 68th minute. With this win Bagan climbed to the 3rd spot with 32 points from 21 matches. Their 19th round match against local rival Kingfisher East Bengal deferred due to the latter’s AFC commitment will be played on 23rd may. Mohun Bagan will next play at home against league leader Dempo Sports Club while Mahindra take on Pune FC at home.

Match 5 – Sporting Clube de Goa vs Dempo Sports Club – The Goan derby between the league leader and the last placed team did not evoke any upset result. Sporting however did go ahead through an Adil Khan goal in the 22nd minute but Armando Colaso’s men and more particularly Roberto Mendez Silva (Beto) slammed two in the 50th and the 91st minute to wrap up full points. Beto was adjudged MoM because of his superlative display. Sporting next travel to Kolkata to play Kingfisher East Bengal as do Dempo who face the other city rival McDowell Mohun Bagan.

Match 6 – Salgaoncar SC vs Air India – Air India shocked Salgaoncar as they scored the equalizer through N. D. Opara at the stroke of the 90th minute to leave them shell shocked. Salgaoncar had taken the lead through Eneke Eneke Ikenewa in the 26th minute. This draw did no good to Salgaoncar as they still hover in the vicinity of getting relegated. Salgaoncar next face city rival Churchill Brothers while Air India play JCT at home.

The 7th match between Kingfisher East Bengal and Churchill Brothers stands postponed. The AIFF I-League committee will announce a fresh date later.

ONGC I- LEAGUE 2009-10 : ANALYSIS ( UPTO 21th Round )

Author : RANA BOSE , Kolkata

Seven matches were played during the week for the 21st round of the ONGC I-League, all matches provided results except for one match, which ended inconclusively. Of the three teams from Kolkata, McDowell Mohun Bagan and Kingfisher East Bengal registered victories to earn full points. Chirag United traveled to Goa but lost to league leaders Dempo Sports Club.

Dempo Sports Club still maintain pole position with 41 points from 21 games and have a handsome four point lead over Mahindra United who are in the number two spot with 37 points from identical number of matches. Churchill Brothers who have played a match less are at third spot with 32 points.

Match 1 – Kingfisher East Bengal vs Mumbai FC – KEB were in desperation to register their first victory in the second leg of the I-League. They had their chances earlier in a couple of games but somehow failed to keep their lead intact and had to either settle for a draw or lose the match. This time they were lucky to register the win after their Ghanaian striker, Yusif Yakubu correctly placed the ball from a spot-kick in the 60th minute. Mehtab Hossain in midfield was his ebullient self and stood out to win the MoM award. We had predicted a 40% chance of a KEB win with a 30% chance of the match ending inconclusively and a 30% chance of an MFC win. KEB’s win puts them for the moment out of the danger zone of getting relegated. MFC’s defeat puts them in the penultimate spot in the league table and if things continue in this fashion they may get the axe and face relegation.

Match 2 – Dempo Sports Club vs Chirag United – Dempo Sports Club are currently in the best of form and should win this edition of the competition if they register victories in three of the five matches remaining. They just have two away matches first in Kolkata against McDowell Mohun Bagan and later in Shillong against Lajong FC. The rest three are against relatively lightweight sides in their home territory, against Sporting Clube de Goa, Air India and Pune FC.

Match 3 – JCT vs Viva Kerala – JCT after a string of losses and draws displayed character and trounced Viva Kerala 5-1. It is the second time that they have done so, earlier they had won by an identical margin against Lajong FC in the first leg. This win improves their negative goal difference slightly and puts them in the middle of the I-league table in the 7th spot. Viva Kerala have identical number of points but are in the 8th spot because of an inferior goal differnce as compared to JCT. For the moment relegation woes are not a cause for concern for both these sides.

Match 4 – McDowell Mohun Bagan vs Air India – The Mumbai “Airmen” came over to Kolkata and got “grounded” on the field-turf in YBK. MMB for a change looked more fluent and could have scored a more facile win than the 4-0 margin had they not squandered a few of the opportunities. Barreto scored a brace and Edeh Chiddi missed a couple also. Japanese import, Ryuoji Seouka opened the scoring from a top-of-the-box pile driver and Brazilian Marcos Pereira did bend one like Beckham to fox the Air India goalkeeper. This win puts them on the 5th spot, two points behind Chirag United. Air India uncomfortably is place in the 11th spot but cannot overrule relegation if they do not grab a win in their next outing or two.

Match 5 – Sporting Clube de Goa vs Churchill Brothers – The Goan derby shell-shocked Churchill Brothers who lost a very important match to the last-placed team 1-2 thereby giving Sporting Clube de Goa a much welcomed lifeline. Still languishing in the last spot in the league table, Sporting Clube can escape relegation if they show the same amount of character and conviction in their next two outings. First they have a tough match against local giant and title contender, Dempo and thereafter the away match against Kolkata club, Kingfisher East Bengal. In their match against Churchill it was the Nigerians who corned the glory for both sides.

Sporting’s Nigerian striker, Elija Junior got them the lead in the 21st minute of a spot-kick which they squandered off when they had a man sent off in the 84th minute when Samanandea was given the marching orders. Immediately thereafter they conceded a spot-kick in the 86th minute when Churchill’s Nigerian midfielder, Felix Chimawuku converted. A minute later, Elija Junior was again in the thick of things as he converted a spot-kick for Sporting Clube. A deserving win for Sporting Clube de Goa and Churchill lost as they missed their goal machine, Odafa Okolie who was not available having to sit out due to a match suspension on account of being yellow-carded twice earlier.

Match 6 – Pune FC vs Salgaoncar SC – Both sides adopted a safety first approach to play out a 1-1 draw which did not benefit Salgaoncar as they still hover in the vicinity of the relegation zone. Maybe, Karim Bencherifa was overtly defensive and believed in the “bird in hand principle”.

Match 7 – Lajong FC vs Mahindra United – Mahindra, 2nd in the league table squandered three valuable points as they traveled to Shillong and lost out to the local side, Lajong FC. Mahindra United took a very early lead in the 8th minute with Mohammad Rafi scoring but the Lajong boys looked more purposeful in the hills and scored a brace thereafter through Boithang Haokip and Bidemi Daniel. The three valuable points leave Lajong clubbed with Air India and Kingfisher East Bengal with 24 points and a win against Mumbai FC at home in the next round should rest all worries of getting relegated.

Prediction of 22nd Round

1. 20-Apr-10 – Lajong FC vs Mumbai FC – LFC win (40%), MFC win (30%); Draw (30%) 2. 21-Apr-10 – JCT vs Chirag United – JCT win (40%); CU win (30%); Draw (30%) 3. 21-Apr-10 – Pune FC vs Viva Kerala – PFC win (30%); VK win (30%); Draw (40%) 4. 21-Apr-10 – M. Mohun Bagan vs Mahindra United – MMB win (40%); MU win (40%); Draw (20%) 5. 22-Apr-10 – Sporting Clube vs Dempo – SCG win (30%); DSC win (40%); Draw (30%) 6. 23-Apr-10 –Salgaoncar SC vs Air India – SSC win (30%); AI win (30%); Draw (40%)ong FC vs Mahindra United – LFC win (20%); MU win (50%); Draw (30%)

ONGC I- LEAGUE 2009-10 : ANALYSIS ( UPTO 20th Round )

Author : RANA BOSE , Kolkata

Of the seven matches played during the week for the 20th round of the ONGC I-League, only three matches provided results and for matches ended inconclusively. The three teams from Kolkata did not live up to their supporters’ expectations and failed to win their respective matches. The I-League competition is slowly becoming a two-horse race with Goa’s Dempo Sports Club and Mumbai’s Mahindra United far ahead of their nearest rivals, Goa’s Churchill Brothers and Kolkata’s Chirag United. Teams clustered in the middle and bottom rungs of the league table are getting jittery and tending to adopt the safest-first approach and share points.

Two other teams of Kolkata, McDowell Mohun Bagan have all of a sudden lost their way and are destined to finish somewhere in the middle of the league table. Kingfisher East Bengal find themselves in a bit of crisis as the specter of relegation looms on the horizon. If they cannot come out of the rut (losing matches at regular intervals) they will face the ignominy of getting relegated like it happened with Mohammedan Sporting a season ago.

Match 1 :– Air India vs Viva Kerala – We had predicted a 60% chance of an inconclusive result for this match with 20% chances of a win by either team. It seems they played as per our prediction and both sides adopted a safety-first approach and played out a 1-1 draw. The sharing of a point apiece will prove useful in their standings in the league table. Currently Air India maintain 8th position and Viva Kerala are in the 7th place. Air India next travel to Kolkata to face McDowell Mohun Bagan who are win-less for quite some rounds. Viva Kerala travel to Jullandhar to face JCT, a side which lost out to the league’s bottom ranked side, Sporting Clube de Goa by the slenderest margin and got a drubbing in the hands of Churchill Brothers the week before.

Match 2 :– Sporting Clube de Goa vs JCT – Sporting Clube, seem to have found some foothold and have started to play sensible football. Albeit, very late, they can survive relegation if they continue to win atches, hereafter. They beat a much fancied JCT by a solitary goal to corner three vital points. Sporting Clube next play another Goan side, last year’s I-League champions Churchill Brothers and will be lucky if they come out unscathed.

Match 3 :– Mahindra United vs Mumbai FC – The Mumbai FC boys held their nerves and citadel against Mahindra United, a side very much in the running for the title. The solitary point proved useful for Mumbai FC as they climbed up to the 8th spot and a bit above the relegation zone. For Mahindra United, not winning this tie saw them relinquish the pole position to Dempo Sports Club who are ahead by a solitary point. Mahindra United travel to Shillong to face Lajong FC and Mumbai FC face Kingfisher East Bengal in Kolkata.

Match 4 :– Chirag United vs Pune FC – The Kolkata side seem to have lost the ability to hold on to a lead. Edmilson Pardel put Chirag ahead through a 19th minute spot-kick but the enterprising Lalpekhula slammed home in the 34th minute to score the equilizer. Chirag have a tough match away against league leaders, Dempo SC and Pune FC will host Karim Bencherifa’s Salgaoncar SC.

Match 5 :– McDowell Mohun Bagan vs Salgaoncar SC – McDowell Mohun Bagan, have in the very recent past fallen into the habit of not winning matches. They lived up to this reputation when after taking the lead through Edeh Chiddi in the 62nd minute they conceded a silly goal fifteen minutes later. In the dying stages Bagan got a well-deserved spot-kick, which Jose Ramirez Barreto muffed up. Kalyan Chowbey, the Salgaoncar goalkeeper played like a man possessed and was adjudged MoM. Mohun Bagan were distinctly lucky as quite a few shots taken by the Salgaoncar players were effectively blocked by M anju and Surkumar.

Match 6 :– Churchill Brothers vs Lajong FC – Churchill Brothers, were perhaps still having the hangover of their facile win by half-a-dozen goals against JCT somehow managed to maintain a 1-0 score-line against Lajong FC to corner three vital points. Their “man for all season”, Odafa Okolie was the savior as he scored one before the interval to put the side on-course for the title-hunt. Churchill next face city side Sporting Clube while Lajong host the very powerful Mahindra United.

Match 7 :– Kingfisher East Bengal vs Dempo Sports Club – Kingfisher East Bengal were distinctly unlucky to lose this match which was always under their control throughout the 90 minutes. Dempo looked very vulnerable as the game progressed and Ranty Martins and Beto looked awfully tired and exhausted playing on the artificial surface on a hot and humid afternoon. Kingfisher East Bengal perhaps lost because of their coach’s inability to repose confidence in his players. Philipe de Rider withdrew the two most enterprising players on the pitch, Abel Hammond and Rahim Nabi and gave Dempo the much-needed lifeline.

The Goan side started the second half with renewed vigor and scored immediately in the 47th minute with Peter Carvalho slotting home of a floated flag-kick. Thereafter they clawed back into the match and controlled proceedings and East Bengal looking pretty ordinary thereafter. This loss consigns East Bengal into a position where the relegation becomes a probability. For a club of East Bengal’s stature and for the well being of Bengal football, the coach and the players of the Club need to be more sincere hereinafter.

Prediction of 21st Round

1. 15-Apr-10 – K. East Bengal vs Mumbai FC – KEB win (40%), MFC win (30%); Draw (30%)

2. 16-Apr-10 – Dempo SC vs Chirag United – Dempo win (50%); CU win (20%); Draw (30%)

3. 17-Apr-10 – JCT vs Viva Kerala – JCT win (30%); VK win (30%); Draw (40%)

4. 17-Apr-10 – M. Mohun Bagan vs Air India – MMB win (30%); AI win (30%); Draw (40%)

5. 17-Apr-10 – Sporting Clube vs Churchill Brothers – SCG win (20%); CB win (60%); Draw (20%)

6. 17-Apr-10 – Pune FC vs Salgaoncar SC – PFC win (40%); SSC win (30%); Draw (30%)

7. 17-Apr-10 – Lajong FC vs Mahindra United – LFC win (20%); MU win (50%); Draw (30%)

ONGC I- LEAGUE 2009-10 : ANALYSIS (UPTO 19th Round)

Author : RANA BOSE , Kolkata

The 19th round of the ONGC I-League played during the week show-cased 6 of the seven scheduled matches. Like in the previous round, this week also had one match deferred to be played at a later date. Of the six matches played there were results in 4 matches and two matches ended inconclusively. The Kolkata derby match between McDowell Mohun Bagan and Kingfisher East Bengal was deferred due to the last named side’s AFC commitment.

Match 1 – Air India vs Lajong FC :– Lajong FC were expected to show some character in this match after humiliating McDowell Mohun Bagan in Kolkata. They failed in their target and were trailing by a goal scored off a spot kick by N. D. Opara in the 17th minute. Throughout the proceedings, the Lajong boys neither displayed the same amount of character nor conviction that was on display in their match against Kolkata’s glamour club. They trailed for a major part of the match and were lucky to equalize again of a spot kick by W. Passah as late as the 83rd minute.

Air India next host Viva Kerala who had played a 1-1 draw against Chirag United in Kolkata. Lajong FC next travel to the lion’s den in Goa to play the mighty Churchill Brothers. Unless coach Stanley Rozario employs Bidemi Daniel and Michael Bassey to suceessfully mark Odafa Okolie and Ogba Kalu there could be a repetition of a big margin victory for Churchill Brothers.

Match 2 – Mahindra United vs Dempo Sports Club : – The two evenly balanced quality teams and both fierce competitors for the title race matched each other strength to strength. Mahindra playing at home in Mumbai conceded a goal as early as the 13th minute as Ranti Martins struck for Dempo and held on to the lead till the 56th minute of play. Thereafter, there was a remarkable change of fortune for Mahindra as they pumped in 3 goals in quick succession. The Yossi Benayoun of Mahindra United, Mohammad Rafi struck on the 56th minute and Subair Muritala Ali scored a brace in the 65th and the 91st minute mark. With this win Mahindra United after 19 round matches take the pole position with 36 points with Dempo a point behind of the same number of matches.

An upbeat Mahindra United next face local rival Mumbai FC and Dempo Sports Club travel to Kolkata to play Kingfisher East Bengal.

Match 3 – Chirag United vs Viva Kerala : – Chirag United’s performance graph seems to be taking a beating. They have not registered a win in the last two rounds and conceded a goal as early as the 27th minute when Sirajuddin slotted home. Asim Biswas restored parity in the 37th minute of a rebound. Chirag’s Edmilson back in action missed quite a few chances as did Joshimar and the scoreline remained 1-1. Chirag dropped two vital points at the crucial stage but still remain in the 3rd spot with Churchill just a point behind.

Chirag United next play host to Pune FC a side which has played creditably against the other two sides of Kolkata. Viva Kerala playing Air India in Mumbai.

Match 4 – Churchill Brothers vs JCT : – The Goan team thrashed the Punjab team by a tennis-score like 6-0 margin with all the star performers of the Goan side contributing to the cause. For the JCT boys it will be a haunting nightmare for quite some time. They scored at will in both halves of play. Nascimento Silvera (10’), Felix Chimawuku (11’), Lalrindica (35’), Odafa Okolie (75’ and 88’) and Ogba Kalu Nnanna (90’+2’) It was a case of abject surrender by Parminder’s men and they will like to forget this aberration as fast as possible and redeem their pride against the bottom-ranked Sporting Clube de Goa. Churchill next play host to Lajong FC and this match in all probability could be a repeat of the JCT match enabling Churchill to improve on their goal average.

Match 5 – Salgaoncar Sports Club vs Sporting Clube de Goa : – It was a clash of the two Goan sides. Sporting Clube de Goa registered their 2nd win when they comprehensively beat the much fancied Salgaoncar Sports Club 3-1. With this win Sporting are still destined for relegation and these late wins do no good to them but spoil their opponent’s party. Salgaoncar’s loss puts them in a precarious position as they are also hovering close to the relegation zone.

Salgaoncar’s coach, Karim Bencherifa next takes his boys to Kolkata to face his old Club, McDowell Mohun Bagan who now have a new coach at their helm. Incidentally, this will be some sort of a “baptism with fire” for Bagan’s new boss, Biswajit Bhattacharya who takes on Salgaoncar without any competitive match play behind him.

Match 6 – Mumbai FC vs Pune FC: – Mumbai FC lost this match to a spirited Pune FC and are second last in the I-League table. They lost 1-2 after Mumbai FC’s Dane Periera opened the scoring on the 55th minute but Brazilian utility man Edmar Figuera scored a brace for Pune FC in the 58th minute and the 78th minute. Mumbai FC next take on the mighty Mahindra United and Pune FC play Chirag United in Kolkata.

Prediction of 20th Round

1. 05-Apr-10 – Air India vs Viva Kerala – AI win (20%); VK win (20%); Draw (60%)

2. 07-Apr-10 – Sporting Clube, Goa vs JCT – SCG win (30%) JCT win (30%); Draw (40%)

3. 07-Apr-10 – Mahindra Utd vs Mumbai FC – MU win (60%); MFC win (20%); Draw (20%)

4. 09-Apr-10 – Chirag United vs Pune FC – CU win (30%); PFC win (40%); Draw (30%)

5. 10-Apr-10 – MMB vs Salgaocar SC – MMB win (30%); SSC win (30%); Draw (40%)

6. 11-Apr-10 – KEB vs Dempo SC – KEB win (30%); DSC win (40%); Draw (30%)

I- LEAGUE ANALYSIS (UPTO 18th Round)

Author : RANA BOSE , Kolkata

This week six of the seven matches for the 18th round of the ONGC I-League were played out. This week was a disaster for all the three Kolkata teams. Both McDowell Mohun Bagan and Kingfisher East Bengal were humiliated by lesser known opponents. Only Chirag United displayed some semblance of resistance and went down by the slenderest margin to prospective I-League champions Mahindra United. Both McDowell Mohun Bagan and Kingfisher East Bengal lost by margins which at best can be termed as utter humiliation.

A serious point that comes up is that the two big clubs of Kolkata do not command the same amount of awe and respect from even the league laggards. On any given day both these Kolkata clubs can be beaten fair and square by any other team in the fray.

Match 1 – Air India vs Mumbai FC :– This match between two Mumbai teams ended scoreless and both teams were contending to share points. This sharing of a point a piece will be useful when the matter of relegation comes up. Currently the airmen maintain 10th position and Mumbai FC are at 11th place in the league table. Air India next play Lajong FC, a team which is upbeat after trouncing McDowell Mohun Bagan Club comprehensively. Mumbai FC stays back at Mumbai to host Pune FC. The Pune team had a week rest as their 18th round match against Churchill Brothers stands deferred. It is hard to guess a result in the match between Mumbai FC vs Pune FC as both teams are evens-stevens.

Match 2 – Dempo Sports Club vs JCT: – Dempo with this win continue to be at the top of the league table with 35 points from 18 matches. They are on course to annex the I-League given the firepower and the consistency of their Nigerian goal getter Ranti Martins. In the match against Chirag United played in Kolkata, Mahindra dominated the proceedings and Subair Muritala Ali scored the only goal against his old club to keep Mahindras on course. Joshimar of Chirag United missed a few scoring opportunities. While Chirag dominated the proceedings before the interval it was Mahindra United who controlled the second half of play. Dempo next travel to Mumbai to face Mahindra United and this tie will be keenly watched by Indian football lovers as it is a clash of two teams which are in the championship race.

Match 3 – McDowell Mohun Bagan vs Lajong FC :– Lajong boys under the tutelage of Stanley Rozario outsmarted Kolkata’s glamour club, McDowell Mohun Bagan in an away game at Yuba Bharati Krirangan, Kolkata to humiliate them with a flattering margin of 4-1. On a cloudy evening with a smart shower just before the start of play and with ideal football conditions the Lajong boys were more enterprising as they outpaced the slow and aged players of the Kolkata club to take a quick 2-0 lead. At the lemon break Bagan were trailing 1-2 with a reducer from Surkumar Singh. The Kolkata side did not show any effort to change their game plan and the two midfield imports - Marcos Pereira and Ryuoji Seouka were total failures throughout. Bagan let in two more goals close to the end of play and continue to baffle their patronizing fans who cannot understand the sudden loss of form and imaginative play by the side. Edeh Chiddi and Jose Ramirez Barreto failed to score and the players of the Meghalaya Club were dominant throughout.

Lajong next face Air India in Mumbai. The two disjointed and shell-shocked city rivals McDowell Mohun Bagan take on Kingfisher East Bengal in a routine clash to find out which of the two sides are the better of the two. The clash is of little championship value in this year’s I-League competition. Mohun Bagan’s ex-footballer turned coach has resigned of his own volition and Biswajit Bhattacharjee has now taken over the gauntlet in an attempt to reverse the ill-fortune befalling the glamour club. Kingfisher East Bengal continues with their Belgian coach Philipe De Rider who has earned for the team the dubious distinction of not registering a win in 13 games. Would not like to hazard a guess as to the probable match results as both teams are currently at the lowest level of self-belief and exhibiting purposeless football.

Match 4 – Sporting Clube de Goa vs Viva Kerala :– The Goan team after beating a fancied McDowell Mohun Bagan ran into rough weather and succumbed to the guiles of Shridharan’s Viva Kerala. The Calicut side effectively did the job and won the tie 2-1 to cement Sporting’s relegation. Sporting play city rival Salgaoncar Sports Club and Viva Kerala take on Chirag United here in Kolkata. Salgaoncar under their experienced coach, Karim Bencherifa should not face much of a problem beating the beleaguered Sporting.Clube de Goa who have flattered to deceive. In all probability it will be another victory for Karim’s boys.

Match 5 – Chirag United vs Mahindra United :– Mumbai’s Mahindra United came over to Kolkata and maintained their winning run. Ex-Chirag man, Subair Muritala Ali dealt the death blow to go back victors by the slenderest margin. Malswam Tulunga did get a golden chance but failed to score. Chirag United next host Viva Kerala and Mahindra United take on the mighty Dempo Sports Club at Mumbai. Chirag should win with Edmilson back after a 2-match suspension and should go back to their winning ways. Viva Kerala might pack the defense to thwart Chirag and be satisfied with a point. Mahindra United and Dempo Sports Club are evenly balanced and the match will be won by the team which displays superior firepower and character and resilience in defense. In all probability it should peter out to a tame draw.

Match 6 – Salgaocar SC vs Kingfisher East Bengal :– Karim Bencherifa and his boys came over to Kolkata and beat Kingfisher East Bengal on the latter’s home turf comprehensively. The 4-1 result shows that the dominance of Kolkata’s football skills is no more the nation’s envy. Salgaoncar dominated the play right throughout and pumped in goals at regular intervals. A disjointed Kingfisher East Bengal next play city rival McDowell Mohun bagan who are an equally confused side. The date for the clash has still not been finalized as Kingfisher East Bengal have an away match in Kuwait in the AFC competition.

Match 7 – Pune FC vs Churchill Brothers :– The match has been postponed by AIFF due to Churchill Brothers AFC match preparation.AIFF will be intimated the match day and venue later.

Prediction of 19th Round

1. 31-Mar-10 – Air India vs Lajong FC – AI win (20%); LFC win (20%); Draw (60%)

2. 01-Apr-10 – Mahindra Utd vs Dempo SC – MU win (40%) DSC win (30%); Draw (30%)

3. 01-Apr-10 – Chirag vs Viva Kerala – CU win (40%); VK win (30%); Draw (30%)

4. 01-Apr-10 – Churchill vs JCT – CB win (40%); JCT win (20%); Draw (40%)

5. 03-Apr-10 – Salgaocar SC vs Sporting Goa – SSC win (40%); SCG win (20%); Draw (40%)

6. 03-Apr-10 – Mumbai FC vs Pune FC – MFC win (40%); PFC win (20%); Draw (40%)

In the previous article we had reviewed the performance in the 16th round matches of the I-League. Considering the individual strengths of the teams we had ventured to hazard a guess as to the match results in the 17th round. Surprisingly, the favorite sides in most cases came a cropper against their less fancied opponents.

Match 1 – Lajong FC vs Pune FC : - We had predicted the match result as 40% chance of a draw, 40% chance of Pune FC winning, considering their recent upsurge and a low 20% probability of a Lajong win. Surprisingly, Lajong displayed rare character and determination and ensured a victory, thanks to a fine late goal on the 73rd minute mark by their local boy F.Tuboi who also was adjudged the MoM. The win does not improve their second last standing in the league table but gives Lajong the necessary confidence and the impetus to perform creditably in their next away match at Kolkata against McDowell Mohun Bagan. Pune FC go back home to ponder the loss throughout the week as their scheduled match against the Churchill Brothers stands deferred.

Match 2 – M. Mohun Bagan vs Sporting Goa : - Prior to this game SCG had not won a match in this year’s I-League. However, this time against a more fancied opponent they wiped off the stigma and got the desired victory thanks to rank bad play by the home side. We had predicted a 40% chance of the match ending inconclusively. Bagan were favorites and were in with a 50% chance of victory. A low 10% chance of a SCG win was the logical arithmetic. Bagan starting off with their best possible first XI broke the deadlock on the 12th minute mark of a nice flick by their old warhorse Barreto and the supporters were jubilant but gradually started doing all the wrong things at the same time.

The Bagan boys were a confused lot as their hotshot midfielders Marcos, Seouka, Snehasish and Ishfaq conceded both territory and tempo. They surrendered the lead before the halfway mark and let in one more in the last quarter to come out second best. Sporting, Goa continues to remain at the last spot in the league table. Bolstered by this away win they now host Viva Kerala who also did perform creditably in the 16th round match against Mahindra United, a serious title contending side. McDowell Mohun Bagan will host Lajong FC and the players of the home side will be under tremendous pressure to put things in order from here on if they nurture any hopes of winning the title.

Match 3 – JCT vs Mumbai FC : - JCT boys are a changed lot in the 2nd leg of the competition thanks to the return of Baljit Singh Saini after a road mishap. JCT are now looking more purposeful as their two foreigners Penn Orji and Henry are performing creditably. It was Henry who scored against Mumbai FC in the 55th minute and retained that lead right throughout. We had predicted a JCT win (40%), a Mumbai FC win (30%) and a 30% chance of the match ending inconclusively. This win leapfrogs them to the 7th spot above Kingfisher East Bengal and their total tally of points is 22 of 17 matches. Mumbai FC are in the 10th spot with 20 points and are slipping into the danger zone as the point difference with the second last team Lajong FC is only 3. Mumbai need to make wholesale change in their playing style to avoid relegation.

JCT next have a tough away match against Dempo who are upbeat after trouncing city rival Churchill Brothers. Mumbai FC host another local side of Mumbai, Air India who returned from Kolkata after grounding Kingfisher East Bengal by a brace.

Match 4 – Dempo SC vs Churchill Brothers : - The Goan derby was the mother of all matches in this week’s I-League clashes. Dempo SC won the match 4-2 and displayed distinctly superiority compared to Churchill Brothers. Ranti Martins the Nigerian striker of Dempo struck twice midway in each half with Climax Lawrence and Joaquim Abranches also chipping in. Odafa Okolie tried his best and scored a goal, as did the other Nigerian, Felix Chimawuku but their efforts went in vain. Ranti was justifiably chosen the MoM.

Dempo did well to raise their level of the game and steam-rolled the powerful Churchill Brothers even after the release of Sunil Chettri who is trying for an overseas contract. Dempo next host JCT and this match could be a clash worth watching because of the contrasting styles of play. Churchill Brothers smarting from their trouncing in the hands of Dempo get a week’s respite as their next away match against Pune FC is deferred.

Match 5 – Kingfisher East Bengal vs Air India : - Mumbai’s Air India gave Kingfisher East Bengal a course in football lesson by controlling the game from start to finish and scoring a brace. Kailash Patil and N. D. Opara struck in each half of the game and McDowell Mohun Bagan discard Peter Odafe in Air India’s central defensive zone played like a man possessed to thwart all efforts of the East Bengal side to score. He was adjudged MoM for his brilliant game. The problem with KEB is that they have three types of matches to focus upon. They have their weekly I-League matches, the AFC Championship games and the local league. Pitiably, with the same set of players being fielded by their coach Philipe de Rider in the hot summer afternoon, the problem of burnouts and fatigue is inevitable. It also does get reflected in the matches played by the boys.

Match 6 – Salgaoncar SC vs Chirag United : - Chirag United under their coach Anjan Nath travelled to Goa and came back with a convincing 2-1 win over Karim Bencherifa’s boys. Chirag were without their ebullient striker Edmilson Pardel but another Brazilian, the big-bodied Joshimar da Silva and veteran Asim Biswas scored twice to ensure a win. Beevan D’Mello of Salgaoncar was rewarded for his efforts as he scored a reducer but that was a case of too little, too late. This win provides Chirag United a position, which is within striking distance of the league leader Dempo with 32 points. Chirag have mustered 29 points, as have Mahindra United but the “Jeepmen” have a more favorable goal difference. Chirag next have a tough match at home against the “Jeepmen” and in the event of a result either Mahindras or Chirag could create the gap of 3 points. A draw maintains the status quo in the league table.

Match 7 – Viva Kerala vs Mahindra United : - Viva Kerala nearly caused an upset when their North Eastern striker T. Karma slotted home at the 62nd minute. This left Mahindras shell-shocked and they were lucky to salvage a point thanks to a very late equalizer by Lamine Tamba. Viva next travel to Goa to play Sporting and Mahindras have a tough away match against Chirag United of Kolkata who are nestled with the same number of points in the league table. Viva scored first in the 62nd minute of a Karma goal that was neutralized as late as the 86th minute by their overseas recruit Lamine Tamba. There is every possibility of the match between Sporting, Goa and Viva Kerala ending in a draw but Sporting boys may also get a decision in their favour if they take lessons from the win against Mohun Bagan.

The 7th match between Pune FC and Churchill Brothers stands postponed. The AIFF I-League committee will announce fresh date later.

Prediction of 18th Round

Two of the total seven matches of the 16th round played over the weekend produced positive results. The rest five saw a surfeit of drawn encounters resulting in minimal movement amongst the teams in the league standing. Of the fourteen teams in the fray only two teams registered victories to improve their respective standings in the league table. At the start of the 16th round, Goa’s Dempo Sports Club was ensconced at the top of the league table with 29 points. Mumbai’s Mahindra United was just a point behind with 28. Team Churchill was in the 3rd spot with 25 points, Kolkata’s McDowell Mohun Bagan Club 4th with 24 points and Chirag United, another Kolkata outfit with 23 points followed Mohun Bagan.

The 16th round saw the aforementioned clubs save and except Chirag United, failing to capitalize on the situation and either failed to register wins and earn full points or played out drawn matches to salvage just the solitary point to no great advantage.

1. Mahindra United, Mumbai : – The “Jeepmen” find themselves topping the table at the end of the 16th round despite registering a 1-1 draw against Kolkata’s Kingfisher East Bengal away from home. They nosed ahead to the pole position thanks to Dempo’s unexpected loss to another Goan side, Salgaoncar played during the week. Although, both Mahindra and Dempo have 29 points from 16 matches, Mahindra’s have a better goal difference. They have a 17th round upcoming match at Calicut against Viva Kerala ranked at the 10th spot. This match will in all probability be keenly contested as Viva Kerala boys were resolute in the 16th round and nearly beat the mighty Goan side, Churchill Brothers who staved of a sure loss after an injury time equalizer by Bimal Pariyar. The Mahindra boys will have to play much above par to snatch full points away from home.

2. Dempo Sports Club, Goa :– Their 16th round clash was against the local side Salgaoncar Sports Club languishing in the 11th spot. The match played at the Fatodara stadium saw Salgaoncar under their new coach upset and register a facile 3-2 win against the league leader. Dempo’s docking the full three points means the competition is still up for grabs for all the five teams in the fray and with 10 more rounds to be played.

Salgaocar were more fluid in attack and were leading 2-1 at the lemon break from two fine goals by the Nigerian, Eneke Eneke Ikenwa and local boy Robin Samieinia and a reducer from Dempo’s ebullient striker Ranti Martins. The second half saw McDowell Mohun Bagan’s ex-coach Karim Bencherifa retaining his poise as did his team despite the equalizer by Anwar Ali for Dempo’s on the hour-mark. Eneke slotted home the winner six minutes later to register a vital win.

This loss was a calamity of sorts as they relinquished the top spot in the league table and have a tough match against another title aspirant and last year’s winner, Churchill Brothers.

3. Churchill Brothers, Goa : – Mustering 26 points Odafa Okolie and his teammates have a dual role to play henceforth. They have to focus both their upcoming I-League as also the AFC matches. They had played an inconclusive 1-1 draw away against Viva Kerala in the I-League and a 2-2 draw against the Kuwait FC in the AFC competition at home in Panaji. On Saturday, 20th March they take on Dempo Sports Club at the Fatodara stadium and this should be a humdinger of a contest. Churchill’s insipid display against Viva Kerala during the week could well be termed as a minor aberration because of their impending AFC match against the Kuwait side and perhaps the Nigerian trio of Ogba Kalu, Felix Chimawuku and the one-man demolition expert Odafa Okolie besides the others choosing to play a relatively subdued match to conserve their energy. Dempo have in their ranks some very talented players of the likes of Ranty Martins, Robert Mendes Silva (Beto), Climax Lawrence, Clifford Miranda and Joaquim Abranches. Whichever team wins this match will find itself in the comfort zone as far as annexing the title is concerned.

4. Chirag United, Kolkata :–The team suffered two back-to-back losses with tennis-score like margins in the 14th and the 15th round matches in Kolkata. First McDowell Mohun Bagan and thereafter to Goa’s Churchill Brothers dealt the sucker punches. This made many a football pundit and the sports media write this team off from the title hunt. Compounding this was the ouster of their coach Subrata Bhattacharjee. Now, Anjan Nath, Bhattacharjee’s understudy for quite some time has taken on the reigns and has successfully engineered an away win against Mumbai FC to put Chirag back on the 4th spot with 26 points although with a slightly inferior goal difference compared to Churchill. The Chirag boys next travel to Goa to take on the Karim brigade Salgaoncar who look upbeat after their win against Dempo.

5. McDowell Mohun Bagan, Kolkata : – This side is akin to the proverbial spendthrift son of a rich man. Dropping points at random against lesser-ranked sides, this team has not lived up to the high expectations of the supporters who aspire to see the National Club from Kolkata win the I-League again this year. They failed to register wins against Pune FC at home and thereafter against JCT away in Ludhiana. Playing against JCT with their choice first XI and Edeh Chiddi back in the starting line-up after a “double yellow”, the side failed to break the deadlock. Their ageing frontman Jose Ramirez Barreto muffed up a vital spot kick in the match and doused all hopes of surging ahead in the points table.

Hypothetically, Mohun Bagan could have found themselves positioned at the top of the league table had they shown more resilience and determination and won the two relatively easy matches against Pune FC and JCT. Not capitalizing on the situation could well see the side regret as the competition reaches the final stage. Currently the team is 4 points behind the league leader Mahindra United and the gap could have been more and insurmountable had Mahindra not docked points too.

McDowell Mohun Bagan next play two back-to-back home matches, first against the last-ranked team 14th placed side, Sporting Clube de Goa, who have yet to register a win in the 16 rounds played so far and thereafter Lajong FC, Shillong, the 13th ranked team. There is no reason to doubt Bagan victories against both these teams but the side is notorious in complicating things of their own.

6. Pune FC, Pune : – Pune FC just a point behind Mohun Bagan is a serious threat to any side. The improvement in their game is noticeable and they travel to Shillong to face a beleaguered Lajong FC. Their last man in defense, goalie Subrata Pal is quite a handful for the opposing forward line and could thwart all hopes of conceding a goal.

The other teams in the league table and without any realistic chance of championship hopes are Kingfisher East Bengal (21 points), Mumbai FC (20 points), JCT, Viva Kerala and Salgaoncar SC (all 19 points), Air India (18 points), Lajong FC (14 points) and the last ranked side, Sporting Clube de Goa (8 points). These teams are quite capable to upset the applecart and the destiny of the title contenders.

Looking at the results of the 15th and the 16th round matches it seems evident that in the coming days there will be quite a few upset results and drawn encounters. The league topper could well be a side which surprisingly finds itself there not by efficient on-field performance and registering wins but because of lackadaisical play and points drop by the other teams.

Prediction for the 17th round matches

1. Lajong FC vs Pune FC - Draw (40%) | LFC Win (20%) | PFC Win (40%)
2. MMB vs Sporting, Goa - Draw (40%) |MMB Win (50%) | SCG Win (10%)
3. JCT vs Mumbai FC - Draw (30%) | JCT Win (40%) | MFC Win (30%)
4. Dempo SC vs C. Brothers - Draw (40%)| DSC Win (30%) | CB Win (30%)
5. KEB vs Air India - Draw (30%) | KEB Win (50%) | AI Win (20%)
6. Salgaocar vs Chirag - Draw (40%) | SSC Win (30%) | CU Win (30%)
7. Viva Kerala vs M. United - Draw (20%)| VK Win (20%)| MU Win (60%)

History repeats itself but the Colour Changes
Mohun Bagan gets the
Historical 5-3 win Over East Bengal

25.10.2009 :Debashis Majumder ::The day 25th October, 2009 makes its entry in the history of Indian football. Finally Mohun Bagan overcomes the curse by giving 5 goals to their archrival East Bengal. In 1975 East Bengal got a 5-0 victory against Mohun Bagan where Subhas Bhowmik played a great game behind that glorious victory and in 2009 as a Coach Subhas Bhowmik is now on the receiving end. For the Mohun Bagan fans today is the day of glory where as for the East Bengal side it came as a day of disappointment though they have given a tough challenge to the winning side and made their tusk hard enough. More than 1 lakh spectators of Yuvabharati Krirangan today experienced electrifying excitement in this breath taking i-leaue Kolkata derby.

Earlier both the team came out not with full strength, if Bhaichung Bhutia was absent in East Bengal then Mohun Bagan also came out without Deepak Mondal and N.S. Manju. From the very first minute the match kicked off with a counter-encountering mode. In the 5th minute of the match Snehashis Chakraborty of Mohun Bagan made a decent attempt but could not find the goal. Very soon East Bengal organized their midfield and got the majority hold of the game for next few minutes. During this span East Bengal found the net when Nirmal Chhetri scored a goal from a clean header resulted from a corner. The match was just 9 minute old then.

Getting 1-0 down Mohun Bagan started to play their best game to find the equalizer, which ultimately came in the 17th minute when Surkumar Singh made a fantastic run through the right wing and gave an excellent final pass to Edeh Chiddi who made no mistake to turn this opportunity into a goal. After the equalizer Mohun Bagan increased their pressure on East Bengal defence with produced another goal to Mohun Bagan to go in lead first time in the match when in 22nd minute the young star Manish Mathani took a brilliant strike to score the second goal for Mohun Bagan. More and more Bagan attacks made the East Bengal defence helpless and Bareto-Chiddi duo started to create terror in the East Bengal defence. In 32nd minute Bareto narrowly missed a chance but immediately in 33rd minute Chiddi scored the third goal for his team which came out as a result of the intelligent football between Bareto and Chiddi.

3-1 lead of Mohun Bagan just started to reflect their dominance at the game but suddenly the situation changed when due to an unforgivable error of the Bagan defence and goal keeper Shilton Paul; the experienced Yusuf Yakubu struck second time for East Bengal immediately after the third goal of Mohun Bagan. The second goal brought East Bengal back in the match and the team started to gave its best to get the equalizer. East Bengal attack then rushed one by one on Mohun Bagan defence like destructive cyclone. Ultimately the equalizer came in the 44th minute when Yakubu again scored a temporary savior from an effective free-kick taken by Renedy Singh. Both the teams went in half time with the 3-3 purely balancing scorecard.

During the lemon break Qarim Bencharifa; the Bagan coach changes his strategy by rectifying the first half mistakes. Sangram Mukherjee replaced Shilton Paul in goal who had a very disappointing first half at the beginning of the first half and this change prove worth enough at the end of the day. Sangram not only covered up the previous deficits made by Shilton but also inspired the entire team specially the defence to build a protective resistance against the East Bengal attacks.

In the front line the day belongs to Edeh Chiddi. In the very previous match in a Calcutta Football League encounter against Kalighat Chiddi made a series of misses. But every day is a different day; the day of Chiddi to stop all the criticisms that started against him. In the second minute of the second half Mohun Bagan again went to the lead with another Chiddi goal that also brought his hat trick. From a brilliant cross of Snehashis Chakraborty, Chiddi made no mistake to score the fourth goal for Mohun Bagan. East Bengal started their hard work to regain their position and especially when due to injury problem Bareto was get of East Bengal made some effective attempts. But the organized Bagan defence gave no more chance to the East Bengal forwards. But still the moment of the day is yet to come.

The goal of glory came in the 66th minute when from a corner of Marcos Pereira again Edeh Chiddi made the final and fifth strike to the East Bengal goal which also ended the curse on Mohun Bagan after long 34 years. It reflects that the history repeat itself but this time the colour of glory stands with the Maroon & Greens.

Chiddi with his brilliant football and four goals was declared as the Man of the Match beyond any doubt but in today’s game Marcos Pereira the Brazilian footballer of Mohun Bagan played a great game especially in the second half by successfully playing the pivotal role in the midfield. On the other side Yusuf Yakubu again showed his importance for the team but today the day belongs to the Mariners.

A historical day of Indian football and a great victory of Mohun Bagan also left some questions at the end of the day. Both Subhas Bhowmik and Qarim Bencharifa must think about their defence organization for rest of the season. After this victory Mohun Bagan get some breathing space with 6 points in 4 matches in the i-league table whereas with another loss East Bengal comes much closer to the bottom line.

In the post match press conference Qarim Bencharifa said that he is very pleased with the effort of the team and he is not worried with the 3 goals conceded by his team because to him it is the part of the game. He further mentioned that to him the most important thing is the winning not the 5 goals but he is happy for the fans and hopeful that his team will continue this winning strike in the upcoming games. On the other hand the situation becomes more critical for East Bengal as they still now have a very disappointing season and till now event does not secure a single victory in the i-league. East Bengal coach Subhas Bhowmik stated about this result that it is just an accident but he took the complete blame on himself and surrender to the club about the decision for future phase of his coaching in East Bengal and if the club decides so he was ready to live his duty. But besides this he is also hopeful for the better result of the team because it is only the fourth match of the league and the major path is still to come but he gave emphasis on further hard work.

JCT hold Churchill while Dempo hold Mahindra

23.10.2009 ::JCT hold defending Champion Churchill Brothers 1 - 1 in an exciting ONGC I-league match, at Guru Nanak Stadium Ludhiana, Punjab today .JCT took the lead in the 66th minute. Baljit Singh Saini scored the goal off a brillian Orji pass. With todays scoring Baljeet Sainy scored 5 goals upto 4th round of matches in I-League and jointly staing in the top scorer with Muritala Ali of Mahindra United

Both the teams played at a fast pace and were evenly matched.JCT, who held the edge initially, threatened with their speedy runs, building their moves mostly from the right.
