Mohun Bagan -Mohammedan Match drawn in 1st leg of CFL 2007

26.08.2007:Last time when Mohan Bagan coach Carlos left Salt Lake Stadium, he was smiling. – smiling for giving the East Bengal fans their insult of life! And this time it was not only Sabir Ali- the Md. Sporting coach who was smiling alone, but definitely Subrata, was also. Because it is he who had gained most from this match. Had Mohan Bagan won this match, the Carlos brigade would have been far ahead to be challenged by East Bengal. With only one point differentiating the two big teams, perhaps another person – the IFA Secretary is also smiling- hoping for a full house again in the next derby.

Both the teams started on a steady note and concentrated on gaining control of the midfield. Md. Sporting, however had better ball possession in the first half of he game that witnessed a few good attacks from both the teams. The most notable amongst them was a witty chip by Barretto from just outside the box that saw Md Sporting custodian Nasibul stretching his full and fisting the ball for a corner. Nasibul had a wonderful game beneath the bar and prevented a number of opponent attacks with ease. Coach Sabir, instead of putting a marker for Barretto preffered to keep him under zonal marking which saw the ace striker getting limited chances to prove his mettle. The small built Md Sporting defender Sk Azim played with full confidence along with Danial who with his long clearances kept Mohan Bagan away from scoring goals. Mohan Bagan played too many passes amongst them in the midfield which gave the opponent defence enough time to regroup upon. Md Sporting gained a couple of set pieces in the first half but never found to be too dangerous to be tackled by the Mohan Bagan defenders. Paul Mcjames, on whom the supporters had such high hopes, never looked to be formidable enough to challenge the Mohan Bagan defence and was ultimately replaced by Nirapada Mondal in the early minutes of the second half. In the 57th minute of the game, a goal line save by Rajib Ahmed off a Barretto head denied Mohan Bagan their best opportunity of the day. With time running out, Coach Carlos switched over to 4-3-3 formation by making quick change by bringing in Ayan Chowdhury in place of defender Habibur Rahaman to strengthen his forward line. However that yielded little result. In the 78th minute of the game Ayan Choudhury missed a great opportunity when he failed to put the ball in the nets with only custodian Nasibul to beat. If Nasibul would not have rushed forward timely to thwart the move; it could have been fatal for Md.

Sporting. The dying minutes of the game saw some anxious moments for the Md. Sporting defence, when a flurry of activities at their penalty box found a Dharamjit footer hitting the post to be ultimately cleared by Md. Sporting defenders. With this draw Mohan Bagan still leads the league table with 17 points from 7 matches followed by arch rival East Bengal with 16 points from equal number of matches.

MATCH PREVIEW: India Vs Kyrgyzstan on Sunday 23th August

A must win situation for India

25.08.2007:India faces an uphill task of beating Kyrgyzstan to qualify for the final of Nehru Cup . Kyrgyzstan had shown some spirited display to outwit Bangladesh 3-0 to set up a virtual semi-final against the Indians.Draw or a Bangladesh win could have made the task easier for Bob Houghton’s boys but Kyrgyzstan had left room for the Bangladeshis right from the start of the match.

Before the start of the tournament Kyrgyzstan was 9 places up in FIFA ranking in comparison to India but after their brilliant performances in first couple of matches Indians are holding a position 2 place ahead of their rivals.Apart from a few defensive lapses at times, in absence of Deepak Mondal in defense Indian players had shown enough characters against the mighty Syrians in which they lost 2-3. On the other hand the former Russian state always looked out of sorts against the West Asian nation.

In terms of recent form and ranking it is a thin line which differentiates the two teams and it is the performance on the given day that could fetch a win. Indian players have to believe in their abilities what's what needed the most above everything else.

23.08.2007:Md. Sporting edged past Eastern Railways today in SAHARA CFL

Md. Sporting edged past Eastern Railways when they beat them 3-2 in a closely contested match, that saw the emergence of the latest foreign recruit of Md. Sporting – Paul Macgames, who with his solo run and intelligent passing won the hearts of the supporters in his debut match in Kolkata Maidan today. Rarely do the Mohammedan Sporting supporters get an opportunity to rejoice with the performance of their beloved team as they did after the match today, thanks to the extra effort taken by the foreigner to wrap up the game with full points. The match started in an anticlimax as Mohammedan Sporting conceded a goal in the 9th minute of the game when a faulty defence clearance found Railway man Bapi Halder only to beat the out-rushing goalkeeper to take his team ahead (0-1).

Thereafter Md. Sporting came back in the game strongly but had to wait till 25th minute, when a Paul Mcjames’s goal-bound chip headed by Md. Munir found custodian Kalyan Lodh unable to clear the ball convincingly. An agile Jyoti Kumar standing nearby did no mistake to keep the ball in the net (1-1). Md. Sporting could have increased their tally but for a couple of unbelievable misses restricted the score line 1-1 till the end of first half.

Md. Sporting played penetrative football from the very start of the second half. With an genuine urge to wrap up the game quickly, Paul Mcjames lead his team to some stylish combination play added with a couple of long rangers which bears enough testimony to the fact that unlike his other African comrades, Paul has come to stay in Maidan. In the 54th & 56th minute of the second half, a brace of goals by Paul Mcjames and Jyoti Prakash made the home crowd comfortable enough not to leave the ground with loss of face (3-1). The rail men occasionally came agonizingly closer to the opponent goal with some creative moves, one of which yielded result when a Benjamin footer was handballed by Md. Sporting defender Daniel inside the box to be rightly awarded a penalty. Santanu Bit made no mistake to decrease the lead (3-2) for the Railway men.

Hounded by supporters and media men at the end of the match, Paul Mcjames roared that he is ready to take on Mohan Bagan! Surely the black and white supporters have found their answer to the Baretto enigma of Mohan Bagan, to be eagerly seen next Saturday when the two teams meet for a crucial derby.

Match Preview(23.08.2007): India Vs Syria :Rejuvenated Indians Face Syria Test
22.08.2007:After two wins a row, India will face the toughest opposition in Nehru Cup tomorrow. Ranked 112 in FIFA list Syrians will start as the favorite but India’s(Current 151 Ranking) recent performance says they are capable of creating an upset.

With N.P Pradeep is already in the list of injured players, India will miss another mercurial defender in form of Dipak Mondal. Dipak suffered dislocated knee during the Bangladesh match and is certain to miss the match against the Middle East rivals.

Just fresh from their 4-1 victory against Kyrgyzstan, Syria on the other hand side is expected to come out with full force tomorrow at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Consecutive wins against Cambodia and Bangladesh helped India to climb up to 11 places to 151 in latest FIFA rankings...A few more performances like this could help India reach a few more places up the order.

Bob Houghton’s boys might adopt the contra defensive strategy right at the start to gauge the opposition. Indian strikers missed flurry of goals against Bangladesh but they have to come out with perfection with Syrian defenders are not expected to give them too much opportunities.

East Bengal Passed Through George Telegraph

22.08.2007:As the sun sunk on river Hooghly, Edmilson left the ground, crestfallen missing the next crutial match against Chirag United who beat Port Trust by a solitary goal scored by their Nigerian striker Theo in todays Sahara CFL -Premier Divn.League Match at Kolkata.

Edmilson was rightly shown yellow card by referee for play acting in the rival penalty box in 88th minutes of the game.Though East Bengal managed to earn full points from the game through a goal by Asim Biswas off a set piece movement in the 7th minutes of the game (1 - 0), the spectators were quite unhappy of the level of the game today played by both the teams.

Edmilson would try to forget this match where he had missed at least 8 siters to increase his individual goal tally and be in the foray of being the top scorer surpassing Barreto of Mohun Bagan. Except the goal which East Bengal got in the early minutes, the entire match was the sad story of miss passes, wasted corners and aimless football. The EB players lacked attitude to increase the margin barring Jayanta Sen,who in the absense of Alvito took extra initiative to control the mid field and was rightly choosen the Man of the Match award.

Mohan Bagan beat a spirited Peerless 3 - 2 in CFL

21.08.2007:Mohun Bagan Clinched their 5th consecutive win by defeating Peerless S.C in a closely contested match played at Mohun Bagan Ground Today. With this win mohun Bagan reached the top of the league table with 16 points from 6 matches.Mohunbaga's Brazilian Striker Barreto now is the top scorer with 7 goals closely followed by his team mate S.Venkatesh and Edmilson Pardal, Striker of the Arch rival East Bengal with 6 goals each.

Mohun Bagan started the game from where they have left the last derby against East Bengal. With James Singh and Dharamjeet Singh taking control of the midfield the flanks were also active from the very begining which resulted in a corner in 26th minutes of the game,Peter Siddique of Mohun Bagan broke the deadlock by heading a James Singh centre home from the goalmouth mellie and Mohun Bagan did its first lead( 1 - 0).

The green-and-maroon brigade doubled the score in the 44th minutes. Jose Barreto, after being tripped by Saheb Ali of Peerless inside the box.As barreto tufted in the ground, much to the dismay of the peerless footballers, referee awarded a penalty in favor of Mohun Bagan and Barreto then made no mistake to take individual lead (2 - 0).Peerless started in full strength in the second half of the match and within a span of 18 minutes, Muritala Ali, the Nigerian striker, cleverly pushed the ball into the Mohun Bagan's net and reduced the margin for Peerless (2 - 1). Kartick Kisku of Peerless scored in the 26th minutes of 2nd half when he shot in a loose ball, coming down inside the box after a clash in the air between Muritala Ali and Peter Odafa. The score board shows upto 88 minutes of the match was (2 - 2).

S. Venkatesh, the experienced midfielder coming from mahindra United , finally rescued Mohun Bagan from losing one point on 42nd Minutes of the 2nd half,by punching in a James Singh floater from the right and also bagged his 6th Goal in CFL.The dying minute goal of Venky may have saved the match for Mohun Bagan but had certainly raised again questions about the caliber of Kolkata Referees.

20.08.2007:Sahara CFL 2007:Chirag the Giant Killer

Chirag does it again!

Chirag did justice again to its name as the giant killer of Kolkata Maidan by defeating Mohammedan Sporting club 2-1 in the closely contested match held at Mohammedan Sporting ground today. Much to the dismay of the of the host club’s supporters, who, daring the prevailing inclement weather had gathered in hordes to see a victory of their beloved club, Chirag started well by getting control of the midfield and using the flanks optimally resulting in continuous supply of ball to the forwards. Mohammedan took time to settle down and when they seemed to be coming back into the game, Theo put Chirag in to the lead by convincingly placing the ball in the net of a through from fellow teammate Sankar Oraon. (1-0).

Mohammedan repelled back strongly and in the 38th minute of the game, an overlapping Nirapada Mondal made no mistake to convert an equalizer off a melee near the goalmouth (1-1).

The second half stared in an un-illustrative manner with both the teams struggling to take control over the midfield. Both the teams had a couple of miss passes and wasted opportunities to alter the score line. Unlike the other smaller teams who has an uncanny tendency to play defensive football with a single aim to snatch one point from these sort of big matches, Chirag played more pressing football in the latter half of the second session and was richly paid the dividend when Sankar Oraon, in the 70th minute, neatly placed the ball in the nets of a constructive move originating from the midfield(2-1). With this win Chirag is now placed 3rd in the Kolkata league with 8 points from 5 matches.

Team India confident to carry the tempo on tomorrow against Bangladesh

19.08.2007: In terms of ranking there is not much of a difference between the two neighboring Countries, but the present form puts India quite ahead of their rivals Bangladesh.

After a stunning 6-0 victory over Cambodia, Bob Houghton’s men are all set for the sub- continent battle tomorrow.Bangladesh, on the other hand side had shown some glimpses of brilliance against Syria in which they lost by a brace of goals…. But overall the team effort was missing in Syed Naimuddin’s team. India looks stronger on paper and tomorrow it is up to the players to prove it.

Sitting at the top of the table after the first round match, a win against Bangladesh would help the Indians to move even further for a place in the finals. India might miss N.P Pradeep tomorrow. Pradeep may be rested after receiving some minor injuries. Coach Bob Houghton doesn’t want to take any chance and wants the mercurial defender for the all important game against Syria.

Mohun Bagan clinched the first derby of the CFL Premier 2007

17.08.2007:Nabarun Mukherjee:Kolkata

East Bengal 3 - 4 Mohunbagan

Scorer:MB: P.Lalampuia 9', Barreto - Penalty 36',Venkatesh 42',56'

Scorer:EB: Alvito D Counha 46', 60',Edmilson 66'

Mohun Bagan clinched the first derby match of the Calcutta league in a synthetically 4-3 win over archrival East Bengal that was witnessed by a record more than 100,000 crowds at Salt Lake Stadium,Kolkata today. With this match Mohun Bagan reached the top of the league table with 13 points from 5 matches closely followed by East Bengal with 12 points from equal number of games. A total of 7 goals were scored in the match- an all time record indeed, which saw some frenzied temper of the players of both the teams resulting in 9 yellow cards- six for East Bengal and the rests for Muhun Bagan

Mohun Bagan started in fashion and earned a corner kick in the very first minute of the game. However they have to wait for their first goal up to the tenth minute when a faulty back pass by foreign recruit Samad Ochoka saw Lalampuia racing forward only to beat the custodian Abhra before placing it to the nets. (1-0).

Thought on paper East Bengal boasts of India’s best defence line, in reality, both Suresh and Gurprit had still not found the comfort zone amongst them as was evident from this match. Thereafter Mohun Bagan never looked back and stared weaving attack after attacks from both the flaks. Both Dharamjit and Venkatesh took extra effort and gradually Mohun Bagan took control of the midfield and their pressing football gave East Bengal defence some harrowing moments though out the first half.

With Edmilson alone in the forward line and the supply line almost chocked by the formidable Mohun Bagan midfield comprising of Venkatesh, Dharamjit, Lalkamal & James, East Bengal hardly got any positive chance in the first half except a pile diver by Edmilson in the 36th minute which missed the bar by inches. Barretto was in devastating form and marker Madhav Das of East Bengal miserably failed to keep him in check. In the 34minuteof the game, Barretto was tipped off –the- ball by Madhab Das inside the d-box only to be rightly awarded a penalty by referee Subrata Sarkar who had full control over the game through the match. Baretto did not make any mistake to increase the lead (2-0). East Bengal’s coach Subrata, in the mean time made a couple of changes by injecting Depyendu Biswas and Anupam Sarkar in the forward and defence respectively but that hardly made any difference only to see Mohun Bagan gaining complete control of the game. The dying minutes of the first saw a Ventkatesh beauty who in spite of being hounded by a couple of East Bengal defenders managed to keep the ball in goal of the pass of Lalampuia. (3-0).

With the Mohun Bagan fans hoping to avenge their historic 5-0 defeat, East Bengal, however was a rejuvenated team altogether in the second half. Hardly the whistle was blown to start the second half, Alvito took a sensational swinger from around forty yards outside the touch line, only to find Mohun Bagan custodian Shilton Paul looking helplessly at the ball- a goal of beauty indeed (3-1). With their backs in the wall East Bengal went all-out in the game resulting the match reaching great heights after a long time in the history of derby matches in Kolkata. With Alvito and Jayanta Sen gradually taking the control of the midfield the next few minutes saw a couple of chances missed by the East Bengal forwards specially Edmilson & Dipyendu. In the 49th minute of the game ,Alvito connected a corner from the left flank to make it 3-2 in favour of East Bengal. Thereafter the entire Mohan Bagan defence comprising of Habibur, Rauf Khan, Odafe and Peter Siddiqui had a tough time against the onslaught of the individual brilliance of Alvito in particular and East Bengal Strikers in general. Against the run of the game, in the 12th minute of the second half, a move from the left flank saw Lalkamal swerving a precise cross only to be headed in the nets by Venkatesh from between Suresh and Gurprit (4-2).

The very next minute saw Edmilson tipped from behind by Peter Odafa within the penalty box only to be awarded a penalty and this time Edmilson made no mistake (4-3).

East Bengal thereafter missed a golden opportunity to equalize when a Dibyendu header was stuck in the mud inches from the goal line to be saved by a diving Shilton Paul, who was thoroughly consistent beneath the Mohun Bagan bars all over the game. Thereafter both the teams had a few positive chances but failed to alter the score line. The match ended with a score line 4-3 in favor of Mohun Bagan, much to the joy of Mohun Bagan crowd who had come in thousands with all sorts of banners, plackards, festoons etc.

WE ARE AFRAID OF BAICHUNG: COMBODIAN COACH

16.08.2007:Cambodia's national football coach 40 years old Australian Scot O'Donell is well aware about Indian captain Bhaichung Bhutia's class and goal scoring ability.

In 2005 as a Coach of Singapore Club Geylang United F.C who played AFC Cup matches against Kolkata Giant East Bengal and drew 1-1 and lost 2 - 3 in return,he saw closely about the goal scoring ability and capasity of Baichung Bhutia who was then playing as a striker of East Bengal.

So, Tomorrow in the inaugural match against India in ONGC NEHRU CUP INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT at Delhi's Ambedkar Stadium he wants to stop India Side captain Baichung with his Defence and will post marker with him.

The Australian Coach of Combodia said that Cambodia have come with their best team and playing an international tournament like the Nehru Cup, will always be beneficial for them which gives us good exposure.

Probable India XI

Defenders: Sur Kumar Singh, Deepak Mondal, Mahesh Gawli and Samir Naik

Midfielders: Steven Dias, Climax Lawrence, N.P. Pradeep and Renedy Singh

60th INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION :Mohun Bagan A.C

AUGUST 15, 2007 Kolkata : CELEBRATION OF MOHUNBAGAN A.C - THE NATIONAL CLUB OF INDIA

We all know the importance of 15th August, our independence day and every year we, the citizens of India celebrate this special day but this year the 15th August morning appeared with a new form and colour for the MOHUNBAGAN supporters because on that day the members of GREEN AND MAROON- a group of MOHUNBAGAN supporters organized a series of events.

A brief overview of history shows that the birth of Mohun Bagan club on 15th august 1889 was not only organizing a football club but a step forward towards promoting a patriotic feeling, an awakening spirit in Bengali hearts. Mohun Bagan is not only a club, it is a national institution, the only club to be entitled National Club of India. The pioneer of Mohun Bagan Sporting Club, as it was named, was the then eminent lawyer Bhupendranath Basu, who later on became the president of Indian National Congress. The Basu family, the Mitra family, and the Sen family bestowed equal efforts towards the foundation of the club. The first ground of the Club was inside the famous marble palace, owned by Kirti Mitra of the Mitra family, known as Mohun Bagan Villa. It was situated at Fariapukur street of north Kolkata. But as a football ground this was not sufficiently large. It is believed that Mohun Bagan played the first match on this very ground against the students of Eden Hindu hostel.

In 1891, with the help of the Maharaja of Shyampukur, Durga Charan Laha, club ground was relocated to his ground at Shyampukur. That place is now known as Shyampukur Laha Colony.

Later, with the help of Mr. Harry Lee, the chairman of Kolkata Corporation, the ground was again shifted to Shyam Square. The ground was shared with the Aryans Club and Bagbazar Club.

The six slabs related to the history and origin of the National club of India, previously established by the Sutanati Parishad around the Shyambajar area of north Calcutta have been renovated by the organization - GREEN AND MAROON. These are located in front of Basu house, the Laha colony ground, Shyam square in front of Sen's house, in front of house of Sibdas Bhaduri, in front of Mitra Villa, and in Mohun Bagan row. The ex-footballers of the club Mr.Pranab Ganguly and Mr.Shyamal Banerjee and Mr.Gitanath Ganguly, the renowned lawyer of Calcutta High court and Mr. Debkumar Chottopadhyay, executive committee member of Mohun Bagan club were present on the auspicious occasion. All the six slabs were decorated with flowers and colored with Green and Maroon colors. There was a horse driven chariot in which the guests were sitting. The programme started in front of BASU's house where the slab was inaugurated by the respected guests with huge cheers of supporters and photographs taken by media persons. Then the procession moved to Laha Colony Field,MOHUNBAGAN's second play ground. In front of that procession all the members of GREEN AND MAROON were present wearing the green and maroon t-shirts, holding the scurf of this organization. There the slab was inaugurated and then our national flag was hoisted by Mr.Gitanath Ganguly and the national anthem was sung. Then proper respect was paid to the 1911 IFA Shield winning team and 1947 IFA Shield winning team by garlanding the enframed pictures of these two teams. After that all the guests were felicitated by offering bouquet of flowers and also with the scurf of GREEN AND MAROON. Then some speech regarding MOHUNBAGAN Club history and also how the club is interlinked with Indian freedom fight were delivered by Mr.Gitanath Ganguly,Mr.Pranab Ganguly ,Mr.Debkumar Chattopadhyay and Mr.Shyamal bannerjee respectively and they pointed out the position of Mohun Bagan club in Indian football history. Mr. Partha Roy,the president of GREEN AND MAROON in his speech thanked the guests and promised to carry such event in future and that this organization will try to reach to common masses with the rich history of Mohun Bagan. Then the procession moved to Sen's house where the slab in front of Sen's house was inaugurated. Members of Sen's family joined the programme and they were very delighted and gave speech.

The next destination was Kalachand Sanyal Lane, in front of Shibdas Bhaduri's house where the slab was also inaugurated by granddaughter of the late footballer who felt honored and she gave speech. Then the procession moved to Mitra Villa where Saurav Mitra, heir to this famous family greeted the guests and there also proper respect was shown. The last and final destination was MOHUNBAGAN row, the place of first playground of MOHUNBAGAN. Here also the slab was inaugurated by the respected guests. The programme ended here.

One more thing to say that this 15 th August morning the total Shyambajar area was flooded with Green and Maroon colour and all the local people also joined and enjoyed the moments with the members of GREEN AND MAROON.
